Zara Larsson talks touring with Tate McRae and the making of 'Midnight Sun' with Bru.
Transcript
00:00How are you? I mean, so many fun things happening. Congrats on all the success. Yeah, catch me up in the past two years. How you feel?
00:08I feel good. I feel like I'm finally, you know, out on the road. And I am, I'm touring right now with Tate.
00:15And we're kind of in the middle of the tour. And then after that, you know, I'm doing my own shows, my own, my own tour in Europe.
00:23And then I'll do my own big tour in the US. And it's like, it's just coming together really nicely.
00:31And I'm releasing my album that I worked on that I'm proud of. I have like three songs out as of now.
00:37And then it's coming out in just the blink of an eye. And I'm very excited and I'm proud.
00:45And I'm proud of the show we're putting together and the songs I'm going to be releasing.
00:50And it just, I feel like everything I worked for is kind of happening in front of me or will happen this year or the next, like with the shows and that.
01:02So it feels amazing.
01:04How much fun are you having with Tate right now on tour? That looks like every clip I see, I'm like, gosh, this is, I have FOMO just from like being a part of the tour.
01:12Yeah, no, it's so great. Honestly, the way I get to perform for a huge crowd every night.
01:20That is a dream because I also feel like our music and the way we perform really goes well together for the fans who are watching it.
01:32So if you bought a ticket to see Tate and you're like, you know, okay, I might as well go and watch the support.
01:38No, but even people who like don't know about me and they're like, oh, you know, let's just see.
01:44I feel like a lot of people, they really like it and they turn into fans.
01:50So, of course, I'm doing it for people who are in their seats when it starts, which is quite a lot of people.
01:56It's like a really, really good turnout.
01:58And then for the people who are also there to kind of discover me, I feel like they also really like it.
02:05So I get to perform for my fans who I've had for a while and that are excited to see the show.
02:09But I feel like I also have gained so many new fans.
02:13Oh, yeah.
02:13Isn't it kind of the fun to like getting to see them, you win them over like in real time?
02:19Yes.
02:20I'm like, come on.
02:22Let me take your soul real quick here.
02:24Yeah.
02:25So congrats on the tour, though.
02:26I don't know if we have that news yet.
02:28Is that all announced?
02:29It's announced.
02:30Tickets are out.
02:32Tickets are out.
02:33And finally, and I'm just so like, ooh, I can't wait.
02:37I can't wait to bring it out on tour.
02:40Yeah.
02:41Because even Tate is so much fun, like the Miss Possessive tour.
02:45But obviously, I'm bringing my four incredible girls, my dancers with me.
02:50But when I do my own show, I'll have the band and the backup singers and the production and the lights and outfit changes.
02:58And it's like a production.
03:01So it's just going to be what it is now, which is still incredible.
03:06But like times 10, we're really elevating it and giving the audience the true and full Zara Larson experience.
03:16Totally.
03:17I mean, it's all you, which is what it's all about.
03:20I can't wait to see that.
03:21And, you know, it's interesting.
03:22I've been learning more about these like residency things and how, I guess, nice it is for people to have their home.
03:28It's like the same set every single night.
03:30If you did like the Sphere or something like that, what would that show look like?
03:34I mean, it's like you're there every night.
03:35You get to build it.
03:36You don't have to worry about traveling or, you know, different logistics.
03:39No.
03:40And you can do like a crazy set.
03:42I mean, the Sphere is so different because it's just a huge, huge screen, right?
03:50Right.
03:51That's true.
03:51So the content for that would be so immersive and engaging and beautiful.
03:58And it's less almost about what's happening live, like on stage and more what's happening around you and how you can really be a part of those visuals.
04:12But I do think visuals in general are really important for a show and what kind of message you want to feel.
04:18I think for a lot of the artists these days, and I feel like La Rosalia was one of the first people.
04:23She was the first person I saw who did it, who kind of made the show that was happening in front of you the content.
04:31Which is something I feel like Tate's also doing.
04:34Beyonce was doing a lot.
04:35Like, what you see on the screens is what you see on stage.
04:40Kind of make that and choreograph the camera and choreograph like those moments, the visual moments of the show.
04:47I think that's very effectful.
04:50But I'm just like in the middle of doing my own show now.
04:52So I'm super inspired by everything that I see.
04:55Yeah.
04:56It would be nice.
04:57I mean, I like to travel around.
04:58I like to.
04:59Right.
04:59Maybe because I haven't done it too much.
05:01So I'll have to do it next year.
05:03And I'll be like.
05:03That's half the fun.
05:04I just keep thinking of the dolphin for symphony on that big screen would be insane.
05:09Try explaining that to a Victorian child.
05:11They would just no idea what that is.
05:12I know.
05:13So for Midnight Sun out September 26th, congrats on, you know, it's obviously wrapped up and ready to go.
05:19But you're such a perfectionist.
05:20Like, how many versions of songs exist from that album?
05:23From you redoing them and trying different things?
05:25Oh, no.
05:25Like, I'm like, we've written them.
05:27Get them out.
05:28Like, for the first time, actually, I didn't write a bunch, a bunch of songs and put them in this sort of song pile that I was creating, like, on the side.
05:38I felt like when we did a song that we really, really loved, we just said, oh, this is going on the album.
05:44It's just going.
05:45Like, Midnight Sun sounds basically exactly what it sounded like when we wrote it.
05:49Crush sounded like exactly what it sounds like when we wrote it.
05:53We added some elements of production, pretty ugly.
05:57We did rewrite the verses for that.
05:59But in general, it was such a, it was something that happened in a flow state of just, we were, like, connecting our brains up into the creative universe and just downloaded what needed to be said that day, that specific moment.
06:18And that was it.
06:23Like, the making of this album has been the most fun that I've ever had creating something.
06:27And also the most easiest way of creating it.
06:31It was just like, it just appeared in front of us.
06:34Like, oh, I guess that's the song and it's perfect.
06:39That's amazing.
06:39It was so nice.
06:40Yes.
06:41I mean, gosh, what a, like, like less pressure, obviously, but what a nice process just to be able to, like, you know, be done with it and be able to keep moving on to the next thing.
06:50And saying that, it really, it actually really was no pressure.
06:54I think that helped me so much because I felt really pressured to make my own, my other albums, especially after So Good, like making Poster Girl.
07:02This one, no pressure.
07:04That's got to be a good sign, like a good omen that, like, you're in your sweet spot.
07:08You know?
07:08Yeah.
07:09And like, I'm not nervous.
07:12I'm not anxious.
07:13I am just 100% excited.
07:17Wow.
07:18I can feel that.
07:19I can feel that through the Zoom.
07:20We're not even in the same room.
07:21It's just transmitting through.
07:23Yeah.
07:23But looking back on those ones that maybe, you know, you worked a little, like, not harder on, but, you know, different phase of life, those older songs.
07:29How cool is it to see the love that you get, like, now?
07:33I mean, I can't imagine what it's like songs that came out, what, like 10 years ago that people are just discovering for the first time.
07:37The first time and showing so much love to you.
07:39What's that like?
07:40Totally.
07:41No, it's really nice.
07:42I feel like I've been doing this for such a long time.
07:46And a lot of people, that's what's so nice about going out on tour and, like, singing my big hits from, I mean, Symphony was seven years ago.
07:55Lush Life was 10 years ago.
07:56Like, I've really been doing this.
07:58And I feel like it adds to the lore.
08:01Yeah, that sure does.
08:02You know, because people, they're like, wait a minute.
08:05I know that song.
08:05Even Never Forget You.
08:06They're like, I know that song.
08:08Oh, you, she's singing that?
08:10And then combined with the new stuff that I'm releasing and, like, kind of reintroducing myself to the world, I feel like it's a different energy because people have always really liked my music and my songs.
08:23But this time around, I feel like people are tapping into me as an artist as well, which is so fulfilling.
08:32Yeah.
08:33What a perfect story.
08:34Yeah.
08:35And it makes people want to, like, buy the ticket, you know, to come and see the show, which is, like, I can't believe I really haven't done a proper tour before, like a big one.
08:48Yeah.
08:48But I guess it's all divine timing.
08:51Timing is everything, right?
08:52Yeah.
08:53I can't wait to see it.
08:54Again, all those songs that people just love and are, like, rediscovering and then the new stuff you have coming out.
08:59It's going to be a perfect mix and I can't wait to see it.
09:02I agree.
09:03What is a song, like, thinking of those throwbacks, obviously you have a love, a different type of love for all your music.
09:08What is one, though, that you, like, an underrated song that you recommend to someone that we hop on board with now that maybe didn't get as much love as the first time, you know?
09:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:18Oh, there's plenty.
09:19Yeah.
09:21Long list.
09:21Yeah.
09:22I love, love me land.
09:25I love that song.
09:27I love, I think all the time is fun.
09:30I think, I mean, if we really, really want to go way, way back, like one of my favorites is still She's Not Me, part one and two.
09:43It's, like, a six-minute song and it's, like, heartfelt and real and it's amazing.
09:51Well, I'm going to play with us this weekend.
09:52Get them on there, rediscover some more Zara Larson.
09:54Start some more trends.
09:56It's blowing up.
09:56Please, please.
09:57Can't wait to hear the new album.
09:59Obviously, Crush is killing it.
10:01Played it on the radio, like, in a few minutes as we speak, so congrats on that.
10:06And you're one of the most positive people I know.
10:09So I wanted to ask you this for a segment I do called All the Feels, where it's, like, obviously you have so many good things going on.
10:14You're on tour with Tate.
10:15You've got your own tour coming up, album.
10:16But what's something lately that gave you, like, the tinkle, an interaction or a piece of good news or something that just made you smile?
10:24Well, I smile a lot.
10:25I smile a lot.
10:26I smile a lot.
10:26It doesn't take much.
10:27It doesn't take much.
10:28It really doesn't.
10:30I'm really happy my sister is here with me in New York right now where I'm at.
10:36And she came to visit me to watch the shows because she was like, I would just love to see you in Madison Square Garden.
10:42Just to, like, imagine what it would be like when, you know, you have your show there and just to be there as a support.
10:51Like, I love her so much.
10:52She was just telling me that she was so proud because my sister growing up, like, she was, and she kind of is still, but, like, my biggest critic.
11:01Is she older or younger?
11:02Younger.
11:03Okay.
11:04She's, like, she don't hold back, basically, on the criticism.
11:07Oh, that's so funny.
11:09But it's, like, in a sibling type way with love.
11:11But I feel like the older she gets, the more she's very considerate.
11:16Like, she would never say anything to hurt my feelings, but she's honest, right?
11:19She was just, like, really wowed and inspired.
11:26And she felt really proud of me.
11:28And that's, like, the biggest gold star that I can get.
11:32Oh, I love that.
11:33And also, when you, like, get to spend time with your sibling, isn't it like you have your own language?
11:38Like, something unlocks.
11:39Oh, yes.
11:39My boyfriend hates to hang out with us.
11:42It's like gremlin mode is what I call it with my sister.
11:44Literally.
11:45He's like, what are you guys talking about?
11:47Like, I don't understand anything.
11:49And we're like,
11:49All inside jokes.
11:54The best.
11:55Oh, well, have a blast out there with your sister.
11:58And good luck with all the shows on the rest of Tate's tour.
12:00And I can't wait to see you on the road on your own big old headline tour.
12:04Oh, yes.
12:04Come see me.
12:05It's going to be really fun.
12:06I can't wait.
12:07And we'll do this again when you're back in L.A. in the studio here.
12:10Absolutely.
12:10Keep killing it.
12:11But Zara, so good to catch up with you.
12:13And thank you for the time.
12:14Thank you so much.
