00:17NIN.
00:18I went at Metallica with it and I just loved it, you know, to just be in a crowd and
00:23wondering.
00:23I really like the atmosphere of it. It has a really good feel to it.
00:25And I was really impressed with how tolerant people that weren't necessarily NIN fans were to NIN and vice versa.
00:32So I thought that's encouraging. You want tolerance.
00:37And then we got the opportunity to come and play here and I was really pleased actually to get it.
00:44I think for me, as my music has evolved over the years, I have the stigma, if you like, of
00:51having once been a pop star,
00:53for want of a better expression. And then having been dead and buried, for want of another expression.
00:58But I now find myself sort of still around with an unclear reputation, I don't know how to put it
01:06really.
01:06And so to be able to come to somewhere like this and play the stuff that you play.
01:11Because, you know, radio don't touch me with a barge pump because it got too heavy for them.
01:15It's a real opportunity, I think, to be here. And it's vital. I think festivals in general are vital for
01:24someone in my position.
01:25Because it's very difficult to reach out beyond your own sort of converted fans, if you like, to anyone else.
01:31When radio don't touch you and, you know.
01:34You know, Fear Fracture did cars. You know, Jesus Christ, how can you make that heavy?
01:39And they did. Yeah, great. So we are doing that, actually, we're going to do that tonight.
01:42One of the two old songs we're doing. And I'm doing Fear Fracture's version.
01:46You know, playing heavy is fun. And I hope that goes down and around. I feel a coward for even
01:52playing it.
01:53But I, you're torn. You know, should you do it? Or should you just go, no, I won't do it.
01:59You know, it's past.
02:01Or people go, oh, yeah, would they hear? I don't know.
02:06So now I'm doing the proper new album, this one called Splinter.
02:10But because I've messed about with this other thing, then I won't be coming out now until the spring.
02:16So I've gone back to having this bloody great gap again. Do you know, it's worse than ever, now.
02:21So I thought, oh, man, what an idiot. How long have I been doing this?
02:25You know, quite a long time, really. And I'm still making stupid, fundamental mistakes.
02:30The last album was sort of quite heavy, quite epic, you know, haunting little verses and great big choruses.
02:39I loved all that. I think it's really, really cool. Do a lot of that sort of thing tonight.
02:43And I think I could do it better. So it's kind of that idea, but heavier, more anthemic, you know,
02:48more aggressive.
02:50Much better noises and cool things going on.
02:53But also I've got this idea where I sort of think of it like a bulldozer sound.
02:59You know, these things start, and they're kind of this big, relentless sort of horn of noise that comes out.
03:04And they don't just mean it's thrashy shit, but monster sounds and stuff.
03:10You know, like a rollercoaster.
03:14So it is trying to get that in a way that just doesn't sound like noise.
03:19You know, there's a musical noise, and there's just a noise, really.
03:22And it's actually quite difficult to get to do. So that's what I'm trying to do.
03:25I'm trying to take the things that were good about what I was before.
03:28Because I've actually really enjoyed the last few albums that I've made.
03:30I've really been happy with them.
03:32And, you know, essentially they're really good reviews.
03:34And I feel comfortable now with where I am.
03:37But I just think it could be so much more exciting and so much better than it's been.
03:44And that's what I'm trying to do with the next one.
03:46Of course, I'm doing it all in a bit of a hurry now because I messed about.
03:49So I should have had a bit more time to experiment with it.
03:53Yeah, I did know it's a dance festival because it's called Rock It.
03:56I thought Rock It, you know, but no, it's a bloody dance festival, isn't it?
04:01They're going to kill me.
04:03Because we're doing the same stuff.
04:05Hello, Chinese dance people.
04:09Remember some of this?
04:10Oh, it's going to be a nightmare, that.
04:13Still, they're putting up in this brilliant hotel.
04:15Brilliant.
04:16So, you know, when I get back, all cut and bits of glass sticking up my head.
04:21I'll have somewhere comfortable to relax in.
04:23So, I honestly didn't know it was a dance festival.
04:26I really didn't.
04:27A volcano.
04:28Who would have thought?
04:30You know, I wake up on a Thursday morning, you know, packing for Coachella until the next day.
04:35And suddenly, there's a volcano going off.
04:36Oh, really?
04:37Yeah.
04:38Another one, is it?
04:40And then, what?
04:42I couldn't believe it.
04:43And it just dragged on.
04:44And they kept moving it by six hours, didn't they?
04:46And I'm thinking, oh, yeah, we'll be all right, be all right.
04:48And then, no.
04:48I was gutted.
04:50That was Coachella.
04:51What a cool thing to be at.
04:53You know, really, really.
04:55Again, like here, really.
04:56You know, it felt like a major opportunity.
04:58And, yeah, sick as a pig about that one.
05:01Anyway.
05:02So, we was going to do a Los Angeles show and a San Francisco show as well.
05:06Which had sold out, actually.
05:08So, again, really disappointing.
05:10We couldn't do that.
05:10So, we decided to do it again.
05:13And because the other shows had done so well, in terms of selling, we decided to extend
05:17it a bit.
05:19And it just kept getting extended.
05:20So, it's about three or four weeks now.
05:22So, I think, as you do one thing, like from this, for example.
05:26You know, there'll be people here that are to do with other events.
05:30They might see it.
05:31They might like it.
05:33They might...
05:33So, these things have kind of a ripple effect comes out from them.
05:36And you get enough of those ripples going, and it all starts feeding itself.
05:39And suddenly, you're very, very busy.
05:41And everything is really positive.
05:45And I think Tel Aviv is just part of that.
05:47I think the Chinese thing is all part of that.
05:50You know, the more of this sort of thing you do, the more you notice other things start
05:53to appear.
