The dreaded crease in foldable phones may be a thing of the past. We explore Samsung Display's new Flex Titanium, a dual-defense system that makes screens 20 times stiffer while being thinner than a human hair, paving the way for the next generation of foldable devices.

00:00We've seen Samsung use titanium in phone frames to support overall durability,
00:04but let me introduce you to Flex Titanium.
00:07Flex Titanium is the first time the material is implemented inside the actual display structure itself.
00:13Flex Titanium is a dual defense system consisting of two key parts,
00:17a titanium alloy film and a titanium plate.
00:21First, you have the titanium alloy film, which sits directly beneath the OLED panel to support it.
00:26It offers 20 times greater stiffness than traditional plastic films,
00:30yet it is somehow only 30% the thickness of a human hair.
00:34This gives you a display panel that is significantly slumber,
00:36but incredibly rigid when you're pressing on it.
00:39But titanium by its very nature isn't exactly known for being flexible.
00:43So Samsung basically formulated an entirely new proprietary titanium alloy
00:47specifically to achieve the exact stretchability needed for a folding screen.
00:53Then there's the titanium plate, which is a flexible structure supporting the display module from underneath.
00:58In previous foldables, microscopic air gaps between the display module and the adhesive plate
01:03could cause the screen to sag or crease over time.
01:06But this new plate allows for an incredibly tight, seamless bond.
01:10It completely eliminates those air gaps.
01:13To make the actual folding area smooth,
01:15Samsung engineered a highly precise lattice structure right where the screen bends.
01:19An ultra-advanced laser hole process fills the gaps in that lattice design,
01:25thus increasing the complete integrity of the material.
01:28With flex titanium, the visibility of this crease is dramatically reduced.
01:32When you look at it, the crease is, in fact, practically gone.
