00:10It's a bit of a wish list of the people you would have always wanted to work with and the
00:15people who aren't on that list are the people I've already worked with and so it was a very,
00:18very satisfying combination of old friends and being rather tongue-tied because I was in the
00:26presence of people like John Hurt and Gary Oldman. It's rare to be in a film with a cast like
00:31this
00:31and then on top of it to play a character that gets to work with all of them so I've
00:38got to go
00:38with all of them you know. Well I've been looking forward to working with Gary Oldman for many years
00:42now I've always been a huge admirer of his I think he's I think he's a really wonderful wonderful actor
00:48and I got the opportunity in this and I'm thrilled I'm really thrilled to have had that opportunity
00:53because we've become very good friends. He really is he's one of our all-time greats I think and
00:59especially in the history of cinema he's a truly extraordinary actor and a character actor as
01:03well but what's beautiful about this is he's so still and contemplative and the room changes
01:08temperature according to him and it takes a pace it takes a while but what's wonderful is that
01:14everything his whole life and everything he's doing with the character and George Smiley's world
01:19is contained within the slightest of gesture or intonation and that that's that's a masterclass
01:23for free for me so I learnt a lot watching him. There's a mole right at the top of the
01:32circus
01:36he's been there for years. Can you tell me exactly what audiences are going to take from this film?
01:41Oh that's a good question. I hope they take a really beautiful piece of filmmaking from this film.
01:47When you see something which excites an area of you in which you're not completely in touch
01:54and generate something which we call excitement if we can if they can go away with that excitement
02:00I'll be very pleased. It's about people and I think that's these rather lonely
02:08uh anonymous sort of fractured people you know that's what I think that's what you take away from
02:14it and I think it is a complex story but like I said it it has universal themes which will
02:19pull
02:19everyone in and keep everyone hooked to the end I hope. We're not so very different you and I.
02:24People are in general much more willing to be intelligently entertained than the movie industry
02:29allows them to be and I think this will be a great thing for them. It's very multi-faceted stuff.
