00:05You can wallow a bit in nostalgia and it's particularly great to look at this old newspaper.
00:12The very first Canberra Times. It is Friday, September the 3rd, 1926.
00:21And it's a bit like looking at a child and seeing how the adult is going to grow.
00:27You get a sense of the values in this young city.
00:31Two adverts inside for pianos. This was a respectable city.
00:36Dare I say bourgeois. Respectable public servants wanted a piano.
00:43Lots of adverts for smart clothing for people who worked in offices.
00:49Smart public servants again. And it was a newspaper.
00:53So newspapers had news. And this one did too.
00:58Front page. Two murders on the front page.
01:02Murder. Woman's throat cut.
01:05Goldfield's murder.
01:07They're written much more brutally, I think, than we do it now.
01:11I think now we have a health warning.
01:14A warning about distressing content.
01:16But the Shakespeare family, which owned and edited this newspaper,
01:24clearly had a very sound news judgment and a commercial judgment.
01:30And we know that because 100 years later, we're still here.
