00:05to fend off an allegedly violent patient outside a hospital emergency department.
00:11Daniel Nelson, a registered nurse and Army reservist, was escorting an aggressive patient
00:16from the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in October 2024 when the man allegedly turned
00:22and launched an attack. Nelson later revealed the patient had allegedly been verbally abusing staff,
00:28spitting on the floor and behaving aggressively before being asked to leave.
00:33The man later pleaded guilty to common assault and was fined $450. Nelson in questioned what might
00:40have happened if the patient had targeted a smaller nurse, a student or someone without
00:46self-defence training, saying violence against healthcare workers should never be accepted as
00:51part of the job.
