00:00On July 30th, Russia launched an attack. Ballistic and cruise missiles flew into Ukraine.
00:06Alongside them were strike drones, hundreds of them. This was an aerial shock and awe of the
00:11type that we've seen so many times from Russia before. But on this day, Ukraine pulled off
00:16something that Putin can only dream about, a 93% interception rate. A record number of Russian
00:22weapons went down in a single night, as drone after drone smashed against an almost impenetrable
00:28wall of Ukrainian air defenses. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed all
00:33in the aftermath of Russia's attack. During his July 30th evening address, Zelenskyy praised
00:39Ukraine's defenders of the skies, noting that a combination of mobile fire groups, aviation,
00:44and interceptor drone deployment had managed to massively minimize the damage done by a
00:49Russian strike that wasn't about taking out military targets. Putin wanted to terrorize,
00:54to inspire fear. And his evil plan, as it so often is, was to launch weapons against innocent
01:01civilians in Ukraine's cities. The professionalism of Ukraine's air defenders shone through on what
01:06could have been a more devastating night than it ended up being, as a record number of Russian
01:11weapons went down under Ukraine's fire. What we saw on July 30th wasn't an anomaly. It was the result
01:17of an evolution, a transformation of Ukraine's air defense power that wouldn't have been imaginable
01:23to Russia even just a year or so ago. Let's head back to the beginning of 2025. Back then,
01:29Ukraine's interception rate of Russian strike drones was much lower than it is now. That rate
01:34varied, though it tended to flip between the mid-70% region and early-80% zone. Too many of
01:39Russia's
01:40drones were breaking through. Putin had ordered more Shahid-type strike drones than ever to be built,
01:45and the sheer volume was overwhelming Ukraine's air defenses. Fast forward to summer of 2026,
01:51and there is a very different story being told. Today, Russia's drones are still dangerous,
01:57but they aren't as deadly as they were before. That isn't because Russia is making fewer of them,
02:01or its drones have gotten worse. Well, mostly, as you'll find out later. It's because Ukraine has
02:06gotten better at interception. July 30th, and its 93% interception rate was a highlight for the month.
02:12But July as a whole showcased the turnaround. Ukraine's Ministry of Defense reports that the
02:18country's air defenses managed to shoot down over 90% of the Shahid, Italmaz, Gebera, and other
02:24strike drones that Russia launched into its territory. When combined with missile destruction,
02:28Ukraine took out around 5,300 of the 6,000 or so aerial threats that Russia threw its way during
02:34the
02:34month. It's not a perfect interception rate, and there's a ballistic missile problem that needs
02:39to be solved. But when it comes to Russian drones, Ukraine's air defenses are more effective now
02:44than they have been at any time since Putin launched his invasion. The goal now is to build
02:50on the consistency that Ukraine is seeing. Ukraine's goal, as stated by former Defense Minister
02:56Mikhailo Fedorov, is to get to the point where it's intercepting 95% of all Russia's aerial threats.
03:02Ukraine came close on July 30th. It will study what happened via an after-action review to see what it
03:08did well and what it can build on to improve the interception rate further. But 93% is a massive
03:14number. It's a record-breaking percentage of Russian projectiles that were blown up in the sky
03:19or misdirected into striking nothing. And Ukraine should be proud, even as it focuses on what steps
03:25to take next. Of course, the obvious question to ask is, how did Ukraine do it? It would be easy
03:30to
03:31claim interceptor drones were responsible for all of it. And these drones have indeed made a massive
03:35difference to Ukraine's interception rates since they were introduced into the field.
03:40During the first four months of 2026, Ukraine scaled up its production of interceptor drones
03:44by 2.6 times, Fedorov revealed in May, and those interceptors doubled the number of Shahid-type
03:51drones they were taking out during that same period. Ukraine recognizes the importance of these cost-effective
03:56interceptor drones, which often only require a couple thousand dollars, and sometimes less,
04:01to build. Its drone manufacturers are working on the next generation of interceptors, such as the
04:06Sting 2, to counter new Russian-strike drones that incorporate jet engines to help them sail past the
04:12current generation of interceptors. So Ukraine's interceptor drones are huge when it comes to taking
04:17out 93% of targets in a single night. But they're not the whole story, not by a long shot.
04:23The rest of
04:24the story went on behind the scenes, and it involved the transformation of Ukraine's entire air defense
04:29make-up to make days like July 30 possible. Back in 2025, when Russia started to achieve more success
04:36than ever before due to its massive swarms of strike drones, Ukraine's Air Force Command started to
04:41introduce new techniques and technologies that would later be supplemented by the interceptors.
04:46Mobile air defense groups were created and dispersed across Ukraine, enabling rapid responses to Russia's
04:52aerial raids. Ukraine also looked beyond its existing military radars and started to integrate
04:57civilian radar systems into its aerial shield. Anything that could detect a drone or missile was
05:03fair game, and this move helped to give Ukraine deeper and stronger radar coverage across the entire
05:08nation. Systems like Delta, which centralized communication and data sharing between Ukrainian
05:13forces, were also expanded upon. They became vital. Quicker data exchanges offered an additional speed boost to
05:20the mobile air defense teams that Ukraine created. What Ukraine was creating during this period was a
05:25system that allowed for ground calculations and the assignment of air cover that could happen as
05:29close to real-time as possible. Ukraine has also had help from its international partners. Modern
05:35anti-aircraft defense systems have been provided, as have early detection systems, which allow Ukraine
05:40to detect incoming threats as soon as they cross the border and sometimes before. In some cases,
05:46Ukraine is able to intercept Russian drones while they are still flying over Putin's territory,
05:50marking out the importance of these early warning systems. All of this was foundational work. The
05:56success of Ukraine's interceptor drones wouldn't have been possible without it. Ukraine's mobile
06:00fire groups in particular were key to its success on July 30th. Most of these groups are made up of
06:06fighters from Ukraine's territorial defense forces, along with volunteers who are willing to serve in the
06:11Ukrainian rear to protect their own people. Each of these groups is equipped with an array of air
06:16defense weapons, including interceptor drones, portable missile defense systems, and anti-aircraft
06:21machine guns. They also operate all-terrain vehicles, which are vital for enabling them to quickly get
06:27into position when the word comes that yet another swarm of Russia's Shahid drones is incoming.
06:31According to News Sky, these mobile fire groups recorded 60% of the interceptions of Russian drones in
06:37July 2026, showcasing their utility and lethality. And they should be lethal. Each member of one of these
06:44groups goes through an extensive training period, lasting for several weeks and covering everything
06:50from operating in nighttime conditions to the protocols for rapid deployment. This training
06:54is good enough to transform civilians into defenders. And there's more. Beyond the mobile fire teams,
07:00interceptor drones, and that detection framework we mentioned, Ukraine has another air defense
07:05trick up its sleeve. Fighter jets, both Soviet-era and Western. It was the former that performed well
07:12on July 30. Ukraine's Su-27 and MiG-29 pilots didn't focus on the strike drones. Their tasks were to
07:19take
07:19out as many of Russia's cruise missiles as they possibly could. They did just that. More than 30 of
07:24Russia's cruise missiles fell to Ukraine's pilots. Much like the mobile fire teams, these pilots receive
07:30information in real time due to ground-based radar stations, allowing them to jet toward a strike zone,
07:35even before that zone has become an issue. Ukraine's jets are now outfitted with electronic warfare
07:40kits, air-to-air missiles, and infrared traps. Combined, they are dangerous defensive assets,
07:46as they proved during Ukraine's record-breaking night. Western airframes, such as F-16s that
07:51Ukraine has received from its partners, aren't left out. If anything, they may be more important than
07:55the Soviet airframes. By January 2026, Aviation Week was reporting that Ukraine's F-16s had recorded
08:02their 1,000th aerial kill. Several hundred more have likely been added since, though we don't know
08:07if they built on their collective tally on July 30. You'll notice that we've made very few mentions
08:12of Russia's ballistic missiles so far. There's a reason for that, which we'll be getting to soon.
08:17But first, it's worth pointing out that July 30 wasn't the only time that Ukraine broke records
08:22during the last few days. On August 2nd, Ukraine's border guards set a record of their own,
08:27Ukraine, as they carried out the interception of a Russian Zala Z-20 reconnaissance drone
08:32over the Chernihiv region of Ukraine. The distance was staggering. Ukraine intercepted a Russian drone
08:39at a staggering altitude of 6,85 meters . Russia's Zala Z-20 had no chance. It has a
08:49much larger operational range than an interceptor, clocking in at 100 kilometers. But being capable of
08:54getting out of range doesn't mean much when a drone designed to see everything fails to catch
08:59an interceptor coming up on its tail. The Russian drone went boom in the air. Just like 93% of
09:05the
09:05projectiles that Russia launched into Ukraine on July 30th. Unfortunately, it wasn't all good news
09:10for Ukraine. The 93% interception rate is impressive. However, there is a gap in Ukraine's air defenses that
09:16is in desperate need of being filled. But will it be filled? Stick with us and you'll find out.
09:21But before we dig deeper, this is the military show. There's a lot more where this comes from,

09:30The other side of the coin on Ukraine's record-breaking July 30th is that Russia did
09:35experience some success with its strike. Ukraine's interception teams did a remarkable job of
09:40protecting as many civilians as possible. But having a 93% interception rate still means that 7% of
09:46Russia's projectiles broke through Ukraine's aerial defense wall, and the weapons that managed it are the
09:51most powerful weapons that Russia has. In the immediate aftermath of Russia's strike,
09:56the Kiev Independent reported that at least eight people had been killed, with a further 50 being
10:01injured. Most, if not all, were civilians. The biggest tragedy occurred in Krivy-Ri,
10:06where at least five members of a single family were killed when a Russian projectile hit their home.
10:12That projectile was a ballistic missile. And it's this weapon for which Ukraine desperately needs to find a
10:18solution to ensure the safety of more of its civilians than its drone and cruise missile
10:23interception rate provides. Ballistic missiles are the big caveat to Ukraine's air defense strategy.
10:28Zelensky himself revealed that on August 1st, in the aftermath of another attack on Kyiv that claimed
10:33the lives of nine more people. Missiles did the damage. Ukraine was only able to intercept one of
10:39the 27 that Russia unleashed on August 1st, prompting Zelensky to once again call on Western nations to
10:45provide more missile interceptors, particularly for Ukraine's Patriot air defense systems. Ukraine has
10:51practically run out, Zelensky said. If it doesn't get more missiles to combat the gravest threat from Russia,
10:57there will be more days when the war criminal in the Kremlin kills Ukrainian civilians.
11:02It is crucial that our partners understand that these systems are not needed sitting in warehouses
11:07for hypothetical scenarios, but here and now, Zelensky said, adding, every anti-ballistic missile
11:13package saves the lives of our people, and every night that we lack them results in casualties.
11:18However, Ukraine's president has made these types of pleas before. His challenge is that Ukraine's
11:23allies have their own defense to worry about. Handing over all their air defense missiles isn't
11:28an option, no matter how much it would help Ukraine. Buying Patriot missiles for Ukraine is also more
11:33difficult than it's ever been. Operation Epic Fury is the reason why. The US is believed to have burned
11:40through 1,430 Patriot missiles from a pre-war stockpile of around 2,330, the BBC reported at the end
11:47of July.
11:48The US is naturally hesitant about selling more to Ukraine, and certainly won't provide any for free.
11:54That leaves hands tied for Ukraine's allies, who might have been able to help respond to Zelensky's
11:59pleas with purchases made via the Pearl system. So Ukraine has a ballistic missile problem. What are the options?
12:06Building interceptor missiles, including those that it's already using, has emerged as a potential
12:10solution. In mid-July, France announced that it was providing licenses so that Ukraine could build
12:16several types of French weapons, including scalp missiles and Assam Hammer-guided bombs.
12:21Also on the list were Aster air defense missiles, which are used in the SAMP-T systems that Ukraine has.
12:27Even better for Ukraine, US President Donald Trump said a week before France's announcement that
12:32Ukraine would be allowed to manufacture Patriot missiles via a licensing deal. That's huge for
12:37Ukraine, and the country was well on its way towards setting up the partnerships needed to
12:41get manufacturing off the ground as soon as possible, even before Trump's statement went from
12:46a maybe to a definitely. On July 23, Zelensky even announced that Raytheon, which is one of the
12:51manufacturers of Patriot missiles, had agreed to jointly produce them with Ukraine. The wheels were
12:57moving fast. But anybody who has paid attention to Trump knows that what he says and what he does
13:02are often two very different things. That seems to be the case with Patriot missile licensing.
13:08The idea isn't completely off the table, at least not yet. On July 31, CNBC reported that Trump
13:14might have pulled an about-face. Calling the Patriot technology a hard thing to give away during a
13:20cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump declared that you have to be very careful about these types of
13:26licensing deals because there's always a chance that those who receive licenses might someday turn
13:31on you. Trump did add that US and Ukrainian officials are still talking about Patriot licenses.
13:36However, the question has to be asked, why did Trump make the licensing announcement at all,
13:41when he wasn't sure if he'd follow through? Was he trying to point score? Trump's big Patriot
13:46announcement came at the NATO summit in Ankara, and it's possible he wanted to grab the headlines from
13:51the event. Did Trump not do his research? America's president did say that he hadn't spoken to Raytheon
13:57or Lockheed Martin about the deal, but both seemed to be on board. The only thing we know for sure
14:02is
14:02that the seeming certainty of the words, we're going to give a license to you to make Patriots,
14:07this way you can't complain that we're not giving you enough, seems to have been replaced with hedging
14:11from the Trump administration. Ukraine will be frustrated. But in reality, these licensing deals
14:17don't solve Ukraine's immediate ballistic missile challenges. It would take months at the bare
14:22minimum and more likely years for manufacturing lines for both the Patriot and Aston missiles to
14:26be set up. Ukraine is also trying to solve the problem itself. It's working on an anti-ballistic
14:32missile system codenamed Freya alongside some of its European allies. But again, time is the problem.
14:39UKR Inform reports that Ukraine doesn't anticipate having a prototype of this new system ready until mid-2027,
14:46which gives Russia about a year's worth of ballistic missile damage that it can inflict.
14:50The only solution that helps Ukraine in the here and now is acquiring more
14:54anti-ballistic interceptor missiles for the air defense systems that it has in place.
14:58That is Ukraine's only real problem. All of the foundational work that serves its drone
15:03interception strategy so well also benefits its missile interception systems. It's all about the
15:08stockpiles. Ukraine doesn't have the interceptor missiles needed to prevent Russian attacks.
15:13Chatham House suggests other solutions. The extension of the Sky Shield project would help.
15:19That would bring 120 European combat aircraft into the fray, whose sole responsibility would
15:25be shooting down missiles over western Ukraine. That would cover about 30% of Ukraine's territory,
15:30but comes with the complication of Putin claiming escalation if it happens. Providing more offensive
15:36weapons, such as Germany's Taurus missiles, could also be an option.
15:40The idea here is to deter Russia by hitting back just as hard whenever it unleashes its missile
15:45strikes. But again, stockpiles are an issue, as is political will. Whatever solution is landed on,
15:51it needs to come soon. Ukraine's future may depend on it.
15:55Still, despite all of this, July 30th can be considered a huge success for Ukraine.
16:00Russia's ballistic missile strategy is still in place. However, its long-range strike drone strategy
16:06is falling apart. Ukraine's air defenses are just too good for them. And with the upgrades to
16:11interceptor drones that we mentioned, not even Russia switching to more expensive jet-based
16:16technology and its Shahid drones is going to help. The numbers say it all. Not just 93% of projectiles
16:23intercepted on July 30th, but more than 445,000 Russian aerial targets taken out since the
16:28beginning of the invasion. Russia is also starting to feel the pressure. It's having to build more
16:34Shahid drones faster than ever just to keep pace with Ukraine. We saw the impact of that pressure in
16:39April when footage surfaced of Shahid drones looking like they were literally falling apart before
16:44they were taken out by the interceptors. Panels are torn, wingtip surfaces are bent and crumpled.
16:49In one case, a drone is completely missing its nose fair. Ukraine's ability to intercept is putting
16:54pressure on Russian manufacturing. That's the whole point. Force Russia to burn through its strike drones
17:00with minimal results, and Putin will order more built even faster. Soon, Ukraine may not even need
17:06to intercept at all. The Shahids will start dropping out of the sky of their own accord. All Ukraine needs
17:11now is a counter to Russia's ballistic missile threat, and the one thing Russia does that still
17:16seems to work will be gone. Putin may be happy that he has at least one point of advantage against
17:21Ukraine. He shouldn't be. After all, it's not like Russia's air defenses are faring all that well.
17:26Ukraine made sure of that. It snuck a Trojan horse into Russia's air defenses, and the result was,
