00:01Breaking news coming from Major League Baseball.
00:04The Giants are trading second baseman Luis Arise to the Phillies.
00:08That is per multiple reports.
00:10The deal will also include reliever Caleb Killian.
00:13And in return, San Francisco will get two pitching prospects.
00:17Arise is a three-time batting champion and is hitting an NL leading 324 this season with 43 RBIs.
00:25He now joins a Phillies team that holds the third and final wildcard spot in the National League, entering today's
00:31slate.
00:31And the reminder on Arise is that bat has worked for quite some time.
00:35He will be a free agent after this season, so will it be a rental for Philly or will it
00:40become something that can be long-term for them?
00:43Phillies are now his fifth team in five seasons, so finding landing spots have not been too easy for Arise,
00:49despite how good of a hitter he is.
00:54We're now bringing the one and only Luis Brinson to help us break down everything that we're seeing so far
00:58on what has been a busy trade deadline at 6 p.m. Eastern.
01:01It gets closer and closer.
01:03What do you think of this move right here, Luis, of Arise joining the Phillies?
01:07And does it maybe help and answer all the talk that Bryce Harper was saying of, hey, I need help?
01:16Yeah, I like this move by the Phillies, right?
01:18Luis Arise, one of the better hitters, if not the best hitter in our game right now.
01:22Only has 21 strikeouts this year to 25 walks.
01:25Does not know what it is to swing and miss, so you put him at the top of that order.
01:29Plus, his defense has gotten a lot better.
01:31I hope this trade came with Ron Washington because he has made him into a defensive wizard over there at
01:37second base.
01:38Luis Arise did say, if he does get traded, I want to stay at second base.
01:41We'll see what happens with Bryson Stott.
01:43We'll see what happens with all these moves.
01:45But I really, really like this move at the top of the order.
01:48They needed a guy to get on base.
01:49They obviously have Schwarber.
01:51You have Harper.
01:52You have Trey Turner at the top of that order.
01:54Now everybody just slides down a spot.
01:56And now you have a guy that can put the ball in play in the playoffs, man.
01:59It's about putting the ball in play and putting pressure on defenses.
02:02So I really, really like this move by the Phillies.
02:05Phillies are 3-7 over their last 10 and have fallen to eight games back of Atlanta for first place
02:11in the NLE.
02:12So you see that they're trying to make up ground.
02:15How much do you think this move alone helps them?
02:18And then when you add in the fact that they're getting a little bit of reliever help as well, trading
02:22to bring in Brooks Raley, are those pieces enough to help them jump frog Atlanta?
02:28Or is this just going to be a wild-card team in your mind?
02:32Zach, I think this is going to be a wild-card team.
02:35I think maybe we shoot up in the wild-card standings.
02:38I think the Braves are getting hot.
02:39They're going to make some move, too.
02:41The Braves are just too much right now.
02:42They got Acuna back.
02:43They got a lot of pieces back.
02:45And they're going to get some pitching.
02:46So I think the division, maybe out of the question, we'll see.
02:48You never know.
02:49Down the stretch, teams get hot.
02:50Another team gets cold.
02:52And they can shoot above the Braves there.
02:54But for me, I just think that they're chasing this wild-card.
02:57But this helps, right?
02:59Again, we talk about guys that can get on base early in your lineup, early and often.
03:03Guys that you know are going to give you a quality of bat.
03:06And that's what Louisa Rize brings.
03:08And then you add Raley to the mix into that bullpen.
03:11We always talk about the Phillies need to make more moves on the bullpen side of things.
03:14You get two bullpen arms back.
03:16But Raley has a 1-4 ERA this year, pitching great this year.
03:19You had a lefty specialist out of the bullpen to counteract the Dodgers and the Brewers
03:25and all their lefty hitters as well.
03:26So I really like that move for them.
03:28But again, Louisa Rize, everybody's just going to slide down a slot for me.
03:32But this move, whoever got him, I was going to love the move just because of the hitter he is
03:37and just the brain, the cerebral brain that he is on the hitting side of things.
03:43And again, he adds defense, too.
03:44You're not taking away defense, putting him out there at second base or wherever you decide to put him.
03:48So again, this move is really, really intelligent.
03:50I love this move for the Phillies and also in the bullpen side of things.
03:54Are those moves enough to – and this is really getting ahead of ourselves, right?
03:59Because especially if you're predicting they'll still be a wild card team.
04:02But let's say they go on a run, which they've done in the past in the playoffs.
04:05Are these moves enough to potentially challenge the Dodgers should they see them at some point in the postseason?
04:12To be honest, I don't think so.
04:15I mean, Louisa Rize, again, great bat to have.
04:17Doesn't add another power bat necessarily.
04:19Does add somebody on base for those power bats behind you to get it going.
04:23I think they're still going to add another outfielder.
04:25But if the Phillies can add another big impact outfielder, if they can add a starting pitcher to kind of
04:31lengthen out that starting rotation,
04:33maybe another bullpen arm, another dominant bullpen arm, still got a lot of good bullpen arms,
04:37a lot of good starting pitching left on the board, I think it'll help their chances.
04:41But just the Dodgers with getting Tarek Skrugal now, it's just tough to say that anybody matches up with them
04:48right now at this very second.
04:50I mean, just such a strong lineup, such a strong bullpen, such a strong depth system for them on the
04:56bench.
04:57They got guys that don't even start every day that just come in and plug and play.
05:00It's just a tough matchup to say.
05:03Any move that goes on right now stacks up with the Dodgers.
05:07So we're just going to have to see when we get to the playoffs.
05:09Teams can go on a run.
05:10We're not handing the Dodgers a trophy just yet.
05:12But teams can go on a run.
05:14Once you get in the playoffs, slates are wiped clean.
05:16Numbers are wiped clean.
05:17It's 0-0.
05:18Everybody matches up.
05:19So anything can happen in October.
05:21We saw it last year with the incredible October that we saw.
05:24So I don't know if this move puts them in the running, in the same ranking at the Dodgers,
05:28but it definitely helps move them in the right direction.
05:30So then let's keep down this path and say that the Phillies are not done
05:34and they want to bring in a power bat to kind of pair that up with the rise
05:38and all the contact and the hitting for average.
05:40Who do you think would be the piece that you would target?
05:42Is it a Joe Adele?
05:44Is it a George Springer?
05:45Is it someone different to have some pop in that lineup?
05:49I think both of those names sound great, Zach.
05:51Honestly, Joe Adele, power bat, hasn't had as much power this year.
05:55George Springer, we know his resume in the postseason.
05:5823, 24 home runs in the postseason.
06:00He just turns it to another level when he gets to that October air.
06:06Just, you know, George Springer turned into a monster, having kind of a down year this year.
06:10But I still believe that that playoff aspect is in him.
06:13That clutch factor is still in him.
06:15And so I think as far as an outfielder, because they've just been so open about having
06:19or getting, acquiring a righty outfielder, I think those two guys make a lot of sense.
06:24Taylor Ward's another one, too, but he's kind of like an arise.
06:27He gets on base, having a down year power-wise.
06:30But, you know, with the average, he's going to give you quality A-Bs.
06:33I feel like the Phillies need quality A-Bs right now.
06:35You've got power in the lineup.
06:36You've got Schwarber.
06:37You know, some of the most of the power we've seen in our era right now,
06:41obviously Harper turns it on in the postseason.
06:43Bolton can add some power with you, too.
06:45Obviously, Trey Turner's been adding his power strokes.
06:48So you already have some power.
06:49You can never have too much, for sure.
06:51But definitely adding some guys that can give you quality A-Bs, guys that can get on base.
06:56Taylor Ward seems like a guy you can slide down maybe in that 6-7 spot in your order,
07:02you know, just to lengthen out that order.
07:04But to add some power and to add some experience, George Springer seems like a good bat to add for
07:09the Phillies, too, for the outfield.
07:11Sometimes the addition makes us kind of scratch our heads and wonder, okay, what are you guys doing?
07:16What are you thinking?
07:17That brings me over to Toronto trading to acquire Jose Soriano from the Angels.
07:23What is Toronto doing?
07:24What's the thought process there with where they sit in the standings?
07:29What do you think they have up their sleeves?
07:32Yeah, this is a controllable pitcher, right?
07:35You have control over him for the next few years.
07:37So I'm thinking they're replacing Kevin Gosman.
07:41Kevin Gosman was dealt, obviously, to the Cubs.
07:43So you're replacing him, obviously, Kevin Gosman and his playoff resume, what we saw from him last year.
07:49Amazing, right, in the playoffs.
07:50But you add a Soriano, towards the beginning of the year, we were talking about Cy Young for this guy.
07:55He has the potential to be a Cy Young candidate if he can kind of keep it going for a
08:00full year.
08:01But I think, obviously, the Blue Jays, they're four and a half games out of the wild card.
08:05You don't want to say they're out of it, just the way they've been playing and the way they've been
08:08talking about how they're selling.
08:10Obviously, you're getting rid of Kevin Gosman, one of the best free agent signings we've seen in a while for
08:15them.
08:16You're getting rid of him.
08:17George Springer's on the block.
08:18So you talk about selling and then, obviously, buying at the same time.
08:22I think this is more so for our future.
08:25Obviously, he's a ground ball pitcher.
08:26They have a great infield defense.
08:27So you've got a lot of balls on the ground.
08:29So I like that move for them.
08:31It's just confusing, right?
08:32You know, you're buying one of the pitchers that the Angels are selling.
08:36So are we sellers?
08:38Are we buyers?
08:38I thought they were leaning more so towards the selling aspect of their game right now.
08:44But, again, kind of a confusing move.
08:46But the only thing I can kind of stamp on it is this is a controllable pitcher.
08:50We're looking towards next year.
08:52We're looking towards 28.
08:53So that's the only thing I could really make of it right now.
08:55It is a confusing move.
08:56But a nice move, nonetheless.
08:58Yeah.
08:59Some things we just might not ever understand.
09:01But I know you understand this one right here, Lewis.
09:04Going back to your playing days, when it is trade deadline time, what is the mindset and
09:10what is the feel and how do you navigate this time, whether from your teammates' perspective,
09:16seeing guys get dealt, or you yourself personally, when you just have that uncertainty before you
09:21were traded?
09:22How did you go through that?
09:24And I think that was 10 years ago that you were traded.
09:27What was that whole entire time period like?
09:31So from a prospect aspect of things, guys in the minor leagues, obviously names are swirling around,
09:37you know, different guys here and there, top prospects, or names are being swirling around.
09:42I tried to stay away from my phone, tried to stay away from Twitter.
09:46At the time, obviously, watching MLB Network, I watch baseball all the time.
09:50So watching that, you know, it can be tough.
09:53Obviously, my agent at the time was telling me to turn everything off, throw your phone
09:55away.
09:56Obviously, if your mom calls, pick it up.
09:58But if I call, you pick it up.
10:00But it's a stressful time for anybody.
10:02If you're a prospect or you're a big league guy that's had a lot of trade rumors going
10:06around, it's a tough time, right?
10:08It's stressful.
10:09People are like, what are you still doing here, man?
10:11A lot of joking in the clubhouse.
10:13But it's very, very stressful.
10:15Stressful for your family as well, because you've got to up and leave and pack up everything.
10:18Obviously, the team helps with everything.
10:20But now you're moving your family from a place that you've been at all summer.
10:25And then now for the last two months, and then October, you're moving up and moving your
10:29family to another spot.
10:30So that could be stressful in itself.
10:33But I mean, for teammates around you, and then we'll talk about the big league side of
10:37things.
10:37Been through it one time in 2020.
10:39There were a lot of rumblings that some guys in the clubhouse might be out of there.
10:42There might be some additions that we're getting.
10:44We're playing well as a Marlins team there.
10:47So there was some rumblings that we might get Starling Marte.
10:50I was an outfielder.
10:52So now you add, you're playing a position, and now you're like, OK, we're going to get
10:57essentially a veteran guy that can help kind of move the needle for us.
11:01So in a sense, you're like, oh, man, that means I'm going to be a platoon guy.
11:05But at the same time, you're like, OK, we're getting this impact bat.
11:09We're getting this impact center fielder.
11:10Like, whatever it takes to win at the end of the day, especially if you're a contender.
11:14Whatever it takes to win, if we're going to get this guy and he's going to help our chances
11:18to win, let's do it.
11:19Let's be all about it.
11:20It's not all about you.
11:22It's all about the team and getting late in October and winning a championship at the
11:25end of the day.
11:26So you kind of have to put your ego aside there.
11:28But, you know, it's a crazy, stressful time.
11:31And as we're going to see today, man, a lot of guys are going to be on the move.
11:34A lot of guys are going to be uprooted and moving to different cities.
11:37But it's a wild ride, to say the least.
11:40Yeah, crazy was honestly the only word I could think of as you were chronicling all that because
11:44it's just something that I think, unless you're in it, will be the only way that you can fully
11:49understand it.
11:49Louis Brinson, thank you so much.
11:51Appreciate all your insight.
11:53And as we keep going with this MLB trade deadline on the way, we show you the odds to win
11:59the World
11:59Series.
11:59This was entering today.
12:02Dodgers, the big-time favorite at plus 155.
12:04Then you go Yankees and the Braves at plus 850.
12:08Phillies have made moves.
12:09We'll see if that changes from 20 to 1 to something a little bit better.
12:34.
12:34You
