00:00The Felidae family consists of 40 species of wild cats that are divided into eight
00:05different lineages. This is one of the most fascinating stories of evolution in the animal
00:11kingdom. More than 10 million years ago, the oldest split among all living cat species occurred.
00:18At that time, the Pantherinae, which includes five big cats, separated from the Felinae,
00:24which is made up of the other members of the Felidae family. After this, the Felinae continued
00:30to evolve and diverge over the course of about 1 to 3 million years. From here, different lineages
00:36of cats were formed, including the Caracol, Ocelot, Lynx, Puma, and even the lineage of our domestic
00:43cats. In this guide, we will examine them closely. We will look into each important split in the
00:48evolutionary tree of the Felidae family, as well as the different lineages and species that emerged
00:54from these changes. So before we begin, don't forget to subscribe to Noel Polo TV and hit the
01:00notification bell so you won't miss any of our other amazing stories. Let's get started.
01:06Panthera is the oldest and most distant evolutionary lineage from our domestic cats.
01:11This group includes the largest and, honestly, the scariest members of the cat family. This lineage
01:17is composed of two genera, Panthera and Neophilus. Panthera is the most well-known of all the cat
01:24genera because it includes the five big cats of the world, the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard,
01:31and snow leopard. Meanwhile, Neophilus is composed of two species of clouded leopard
01:36that are smaller compared to their relatives in Panthera. The tiger is the largest cat on the planet.
01:43It can reach a length of almost 13 feet, including the tail and weigh up to 660 pounds,
01:50or approximately 300 kilos. This species is divided into six living subspecies, including the Bengal
01:58tiger, Malayan tiger, and Siberian tiger. There are also three subspecies that have become extinct,
02:03such as the Javan tiger and Caspian tiger. Tigers have large territories and they live in various types
02:09of forests and grasslands. Like most wild cats, they live alone. Most tigers are found in South and
02:17Southeast Asia, while a small population of Siberian tigers lives in the mountains of the far east of
02:23Russia and northern China. Black and white tigers have been recorded. The black color is caused by a
02:29rare genetic condition called pseudomelanism, while the white tiger is a result of albinism or leucism that
02:37affects their color. Unfortunately, tigers are now endangered due to illegal hunting and the
02:43continued loss of their habitat. However, a healthy population still remains in India, where they are
02:49strictly protected. The well-known elusive snow leopard is the smallest species in the genus Panthera.
02:55Where can they be found? In the highest plateau in the world, the Tibetan Plateau, also in the regions
03:01of Mongolia and Siberia. Many might think that the snow leopard simply originated from the common
03:07leopard and gradually evolved to become a species highly adapted to life in the icy mountains. But
03:14modern studies have shown that the snow leopard did not originate from the common leopard. Instead,
03:20it is more closely related to the tiger, while lions are also more closely related to tigers.
03:27The altitude of the area where the snow leopard lives changes depending on the season.
03:31During summer, they move up to higher parts of the mountains where the climate remains cool.
03:36Their thick fur, which is pale white with dark spots, serves as protection against extreme cold and
03:43also provides excellent camouflage while hunting in snow-covered areas. They are most active during
03:49the morning and late afternoon. Their main diet consists of mountain sheep, deer, goats, and smaller
03:55animals like marmots. Currently, there are no recognized subspecies of the snow leopard,
04:00probably because their habitat range is limited. The lion, on the other hand, is the second largest
04:06wildcat in the world and can weigh up to 550 pounds or approximately 250 kilograms. In ancient times,
04:14lions were widespread in the forests of southern Europe and central Europe. But today, they can only be
04:21found in the grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa and in a very small population in India. Unlike most cats that
04:28prefer to live alone, lions are social animals. They live in groups called prides, which gives them
04:37a big advantage when hunting larger prey. Lions are easy to recognize because they are the only type of
04:43cat with a thick mane. According to studies, this is important in choosing a mate because female lions
04:48are more attracted to males with darker and thicker manes. There is also a rare white lion. This color
04:55is caused by a genetic condition called loosism, which results in a lack of pigment in the fur. When they
05:02are not hunting wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, and other large animals, they usually just rest with their
05:09pride. In fact, they can sleep or rest for up to 20 hours in a single day. Meanwhile, leopards can
05:18also be
05:19found in areas inhabited by lions in Africa, but their range is wider because they can also be found in
05:25much of Asia. A male leopard can weigh up to 200 pounds or about 90 kilos. Although they are smaller
05:32than lions and tigers, they are known for their exceptional agility. They can hunt while quickly
05:38leaping from one tree to another. Their fur has distinctive spots called rosettes, which are usually
05:45shaped like rings and have no markings in the center. One of the best-known leopard color variations
05:51is the black panther. However, it is not a separate species. It is a leopard with an excess of melanin,
05:59the pigment that gives fur its dark color. Although there are also black panthers in Africa,
06:05they are more commonly found in South and Southeast Asia. There are a total of 27 recognized subspecies
06:12of leopards, making it one of the wild cat species with the widest range and the most variation in
06:18appearance in the world. For example, the Amur leopard is found in the far east of Asia.
06:23Its fur is darker and its hair is longer compared to other leopards. So, at first glance, it resembles
06:30a snow leopard. The jaguar is often mistaken for a leopard because the patterns of their fur are almost
06:36the same. But in reality, they have many clear differences. Unlike the leopard, which is found in
06:42Africa and Asia, the jaguar lives in Central and South America. They also like water more and can be
06:49almost twice as heavy as a leopard. Male jaguars can weigh up to 350 pounds or about 100 pounds.
06:58Their spots are also different. Each black rosette of the jaguar usually has small dots inside while the
07:05leopard does not have these. Like the leopard, the jaguar can also have melanism, which causes its fur to
07:11become completely black. This kind of jaguar is also called a black panther, which makes many people
07:17even more confused between the two species. The jaguar is highly adapted to living in the wet forests and
07:23swamps of South America, especially in the vast Amazon rainforest. They are excellent swimmers, and they
07:31are the type of cat that eats the most reptiles. They use their incredibly strong bite and long fangs to
07:37catch turtles and caiman, a small type of crocodile. Like the snow leopard, the jaguar is a monotypic
07:43species, which means it currently has no recognized subspecies. The clouded leopard, on the other hand,
07:50is the first species in the genus Neophilus. It can be found in much of East and Southeast Asia and
07:56is
07:57smaller than the five big cats. Male clouded leopards can weigh up to 50 pounds or about 23 kilos.
08:05They live in the forests of South and Southeast Asia and are usually only active at night because
08:11they share their habitat with tigers and leopards. They live alone and spend almost their entire lives
08:17in the trees. Their main diet consists of smaller mammals such as monkeys and squirrels, as well as
08:23birds. Occasionally, they are also able to hunt larger animals such as deer. Currently, their status is
08:29considered vulnerable and it is estimated that fewer than 10,000 individuals remain in the wild. The
08:35Sunda clouded leopard, on the other hand, separated from the common clouded leopard about one to two
08:40million years ago. It can only be found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Its appearance is almost
08:47identical to that of the common clouded leopard. However, it is slightly larger and its fur is darker in
08:53color. One of the most fascinating branches of the cat family is the puma lineage because of the great
09:00physical differences among its members. It is composed of three species, the cheetah, the cougar,
09:06and the jaguarundi, which, although related, have very different appearances and ways of life. The
09:12cougar is one of the most famous types of wild cats in the world. It is known in North America
09:16as the
09:17largest cat species in the United States and Canada, and second only to the jaguar in all of the Americas.
09:24The cougar has a very wide habitat range. They can be found from Canada to the southernmost parts of
09:30Argentina and Brazil. They live in various types of environments, including forests, deserts, and even
09:37in high mountain ranges. Physically, the cougar is muscular and very strong. It can take down large
09:43mammals like caribou and elk, but it also eats smaller animals like rabbits and various kinds of birds.
09:50The cougar has a unique position in the food chain. Although it is strong enough to kill coyotes and
09:56even wolves, its cougar cubs often fall victim to these animals. This is one way for other predators
10:02to reduce future competition. Cougars are usually active at night and live alone. However, from time to
10:09time, they can also be seen together in small groups. Meanwhile, the jaguarundi has almost the same habitat
10:16range as the cougar, but it only reaches as far as the border of Mexico and the United States. They
10:23live in various types of forests, dense grasslands, and deserts. Unlike most cats, they actively hunt during
10:29the day, although they can also hunt at night. Their bodies resemble that of a large weasel. They have long
10:36bodies and tails, short legs, and smooth fur that can be reddish-brown or dark gray in color. The jaguarundi,
10:43on the other hand, is smaller compared to the cougar. It can only weigh up to 15 pounds or about
10:497 kilos,
10:50but it is still an excellent hunter despite its small build. Although they know how to climb trees,
10:56they usually hunt on the ground. They are also excellent swimmers. Fortunately, the conservation
11:02status of this attractive cat is least concerned, which means it is not yet considered endangered.
11:09The cheetah is the fastest animal in the world. It has been recorded running at speeds of up to 114
11:15kilometers per hour. There are four recognized subspecies of cheetah. Three of these are found
11:21in Africa while the remaining population in Asia is in Iran. Although they have long legs to help them
11:27chase prey at incredible speeds, they are lighter than most big cats. A cheetah typically weighs around
11:34120 pounds or 55 kilos, which is only about half the weight of a leopard. Cheetahs mainly eat medium-sized
11:43ungulates, such as gazelles and impalas. These animals have also evolved to run extremely fast,
11:50so every hunt becomes an intense chase. Because cheetahs have smaller bodies compared to other large
11:56predators, lions and hyenas often steal their catch. Although they can live alone, they are more
12:03commonly seen in small groups called coalitions. They are also active during the day and sometimes
12:09at night to avoid direct encounters with bigger cats like lions and leopards. One of the most fascinating
12:16branches of the cat family is the lynx lineage. These beautiful cats have short tails, thick fur, and are
12:24well adapted to cold and mountainous environments that are often covered in snow. This lineage is
12:29made up of a single genus, the lynx, which has four different species. Although they look almost
12:36identical, they have different habitats. The ranges of the Canada lynx and the bobcat overlap only in a
12:42small area. Although they are known to be elusive and prefer to live alone, it is not uncommon to see
12:48some lynx hunting together. Like the caracal, all species of lynx have long tufts of fur at the tips
12:54of their ears. This is one of their most well-known characteristics. The Eurasian lynx is the largest
13:02among the four species and is significantly bigger compared to the others. Male Eurasian lynx can weigh up
13:08to 80 pounds or about 36 kilos, while the other species in this line usually weigh only around 35
13:15pounds or about 16 kilos. They have two main fur colors, reddish brown or gray, which help them hide
13:23in the forest and rocky environments while hunting. The Eurasian lynx has a very wide range. It can be
13:28found in mountainous regions from Norway and Germany in the west to Siberia in the east, and even reaches
13:35the Tibetan Plateau in the south. They are most active at dawn and dusk. They usually live in temperate
13:42and boreal forests where they hunt small mammals such as hares, rabbits, young deer, foxes, and even
13:49wild boars. They usually have no natural predators. However, there are times when they encounter wolves,
13:57wolverines, and in the most extreme situations even the Siberian tiger. Meanwhile, the Iberian lynx is one
14:05of the most endangered members of the cat family. This species is found only on the Iberian peninsula
14:10which includes Spain and Portugal. In 2002, it was almost completely nearly wiped out worldwide,
14:17but thanks to successful conservation programs, their population increased from 94 individuals in 2002
14:26to 326 in 2012. By 2021, their numbers had surpassed 1,000, giving great hope for their future.
14:37Currently, they are only found in a few small and isolated areas in southern Spain, where their main
14:43food source is almost exclusively the European rabbit. The Canada lynx, on the other hand, lives in the
14:48boreal forests of Canada, Alaska, and some northern states of the contiguous United States. In terms of
14:55evolution, it is only separated from the Eurasian lynx and Iberian lynx by a single split, which can
15:02also be seen in the similarity of their appearance even though their habitats are far apart. Their fur
15:07color is usually similar to that of European lynx. However, some Canada lynx have a slightly bluish gray
15:14color. Canada lynx almost exclusively eat snowshoe hares. Because of this, they developed long hind legs
15:20and wide feet that act like natural snowshoes, allowing them to move easily and chase prey on
15:26thick snow. Because they depend on snowshoe hares, there are also more Canada lynx in areas where there
15:32are plenty of these prey animals. Like their prey, they are also most active at night. The bobcat, on the
15:39other hand, has the southernmost range among all lynx species. Their habitat extends all the way to Mexico.
15:45They are also the smallest member of the lynx genus. Male bobcats typically weigh only up to 33 pounds,
15:54or about 15 kilos. The color of the bobcat's fur also varies from reddish brown to gray. It has dark
16:00spots and stripes that serve as natural camouflage while hunting. They are usually found in forests,
16:07woodlands, and mountainous areas. Like other members of the genus lynx, their main food is rabbits and hares.
16:13But they can also hunt larger animals, such as small deer. The habitat range of the bobcat extends
16:19from Mexico to Canada, and in some areas, their territory even overlaps with the Canada lynx.
16:25And that is the first part of our journey into the fascinating world of the cat family, or felidae.
16:30From the massive tigers and lions to the elusive lynx, caracal and serval, we have seen how they
16:37evolved and became different over millions of years. But the story doesn't end here. In part two,
16:44we will discuss the other remaining evolutionary lines of cats, including ocelots, domestic cats,
16:51and many other unique and amazing species that are not very well known, but have remarkable abilities.
