00:01Brazilian President Luiz Ennácio Lula da Silva has officially announced his candidacy for the 2026 presidential elections.
00:08Of course, when the premier brings us the details from Recife.
00:14Thousands of delegates from across Brazil have poured into São Paulo today for the Workers' Party, or PT as it's
00:21commonly called, National Convention.
00:23This morning, on the convention floor, Party President Eugenio Silva officially announced the candidacy of Luiz Ennácio Lula da Silva
00:32for the presidency.
00:34If elected, this will be his fourth term as president of Brazil.
00:38Now, Brazil has different campaign rules and has a very tight campaign season, a lot of regulation about donations and
00:46limits on corporate funding and things like that.
00:49So, unlike other countries, like the United States, where the campaigns sometimes start two years before the election,
00:56tomorrow is the final day that candidates are allowed to officially declare their candidacy, not just for the presidency, but
01:03for Senate and federal deputy as well.
01:05And the campaign season officially starts on August 16th.
01:10Lula is going to mark that with a huge event in Villa Euclides Stadium.
01:14It's a legendary location of his most famous speeches during the metal workers' strikes of 1979 and 1980, which helped
01:24bring down the military dictatorship.
01:27So, it will be a return to the past for Lula da Silva on August 16th.
01:32The election day is October 4th.
01:34If it were held today, according to the polls, Lula would win.
01:36But a lot can happen between now and then, especially since the United States government, the Trump administration, and the
01:42international far right is doing everything they can to meddle in the elections to support the candidacy of far right
01:49candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.
