00:00California Governor Gavin Newsom has finally released his tax returns going back four years,
00:06fulfilling a much delayed promise. He released them to a small group of journalists who were
00:12not allowed to make copies and were not allowed to publish the tax returns online. They were simply
00:17shown the tax returns and expected to take notes. The tax returns suggest that the Newsoms earned
00:23roughly a million and a half dollars a year for each of the last four years, drawing on Newsom's
00:28state salary as well as private investments. The tax returns also had some information about
00:32Jennifer Siebel Newsom's non-profit organizations, which are under close scrutiny as the first couple
00:37is apparently under federal investigation. But the real story is the timing and how this was done.
00:43Newsom wants to create an impression of transparency ahead of the 2028 presidential election,
00:47but the way he handed these tax returns just for the briefest moment to a small group of media
00:52insiders, most of whom are from out of state, suggests that he's really not being so transparent
00:57after all.
