00:00Italy's Interior Ministry has ordered the closure of the country's sea and air borders
00:06with Spain, temporarily suspending the Schengen Free Movement regime between the two countries.
00:12The decision was announced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Ministers
00:17Antonio Tegiani and Matteo Salvini following the arrival of thousands of migrants in the
00:24Spanish-North African enclave of Ceuta.
00:26Responding to the move, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez hit back at Italy, arguing an
00:33ex that solidarity and empathy are optional, but respect for European treaties and facts
00:39is not.
00:41Sánchez, who earlier described the mass crossings as a, quote, violation of Spain's territorial
00:47integrity, cited Frontex figures showing that Italy recorded more irregular entries than
00:53Spain between 2021 and 2026.
00:58Meanwhile, Spain's Interior Ministry says more than 48,000 of the migrants who have entered
01:04Ceuta since early Friday have already returned to Morocco voluntarily.
