Scientists at Kyushu University have discovered a sulfur-derived compound known as lipoic acid trisulfide (LASSS) that shows potential in aiding the self-repair of aging muscles by safeguarding hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), a crucial protein in muscle regeneration processes. Research conducted in laboratories and on mice revealed that LASSS significantly enhanced HGF's affinity for muscle stem cell receptors while simultaneously decreasing detrimental protein nitration associated with age-related muscle deterioration. Although these results have yet to undergo human clinical trials, they may pave the way for innovative therapies aimed at combatting muscle loss due to aging, inactivity, or extended periods of bed rest.
