Pitchfork deputy director Jeremy D. Larson catches up with Jackson and Channy from Fcukers at Primavera Pro in Barcelona to talk running marathons, playlists, remixing, and the resurgent New York underground music scene. They discuss Channy's harrowing journey to the Boston Marathon (via a stranded Greyhound bus), the BPM requirements for workout music, the art of local scene-building in the post-pandemic era, and legendary New York music advocate Billy Jones' record store. Special thanks to Primavera Pro and SAE Barcelona for partnering with us on Pitchfork Talks.

00:02Hello, I think we can get started here.
00:05My name is Jeremy Larson.
00:07I'm the Deputy Director at Pitchfork,
00:09and if everybody could please give a warm welcome
00:11to Jackson and Shani from Fuckers.
00:18We were talking about, we were just goofing around out here
00:21about running, and Shani, I heard that you left a gig
00:29and then went to run the Boston Marathon,
00:32one of the most elite marathons in the entire world.
00:35I did do that, yeah.
00:36Tell me about that.
00:38Well, we finished our show in Montreal at like 11 p.m.,
00:43and then I went to the Greyhound bus terminal,
00:47and then the bus broke down, or like, it didn't break down,
00:51it got stuck in a tunnel that was meant for cars,
00:55that the bus driver kind of, I don't know what he was thinking,
00:58but we got stranded, almost missed it,
01:02like, barely made it to the start time, the start line,
01:06like, no coffee, no sleep.
01:08Oh, my God.
01:08It was crazy.
01:09Are you a type A runner, or do you, like,
01:11have to have everything set?
01:13Are you, like, nutrition dialed in, everything set?
01:16I mean, I wouldn't say that, I guess,
01:18because I was still, like, half tying my shoe
01:21as the race was starting,
01:22but it is nice when you're all dialed before the race.
01:27It's a lot more calm than, yeah,
01:30like, pulling up to the start line still in, like, your hoodie,
01:33like, you know?
01:34Yeah, but it also, like, must calm the nerves a little bit,
01:37where you're just like,
01:37because I think before a race,
01:39sometimes you're just sitting there for, like, two hours,
01:41from the freezing cold,
01:42and you're just, like, overthinking everything.
01:44No, it's, that's the thing that people don't realize.
01:46You're going to be waiting there for two hours.
01:48You're going to be cold.
01:49Yeah.
01:49Yeah.
01:50Yeah, they give you, like, I did the,
01:52have you done the New York marathon?
01:53Yeah.
01:53Yeah, it's like, you have to, I mean,
01:55that is an early start,
01:56because you have to get to Staten Island.
01:58Yeah, I remember that.
01:59It was, like, dark when I got to Staten Island.
02:01I was waiting there for, like, three or four hours.
02:04Yeah, and it's cold.
02:05And you're just, and you're wearing all this stuff,
02:07and then you have to ditch it somehow
02:10before the race,
02:11and they have all these, like, bins
02:12full of, like, sweatshirts and old gloves
02:14that are donated to the,
02:16or people who wear,
02:17because at the end of the race,
02:18they give you, like, a poncho.
02:19So there are people who run the race
02:20wearing the poncho that they were wearing.
02:22The old poncho, yeah.
02:23Yeah, yeah.
02:23How long have you been running?
02:25Honestly, a long time.
02:27I did, like, soccer and track
02:29all throughout school,
02:31but the long distance running,
02:33I feel like I got really into about five years ago.
02:36Five years ago.
02:36And, like, doing races and stuff.
02:38Wow, so you,
02:39so you went from, sort of, like,
02:40I'm going to be a long distance runner
02:41to, like, I'm running the Boston Marathon
02:42in five years?
02:43Yeah.
02:44So running must come pretty natural to you.
02:47Yeah, I love it a lot.
02:48Yeah.
02:48It's my hobby.
02:49What do you listen to when you run?
02:51I have a crazy playlist, honestly.
02:54Okay, do you find that?
02:56Or I just listen to one song
02:58on a loop the whole time.
02:59So there's two things that happen to me.
03:00Like, one, I have a crazy playlist
03:02that is almost like a different human,
03:05you know, where just, like,
03:06this human's sort of like a private human
03:08that I don't, that, like,
03:09I will not reveal that I am listening to
03:11New Metal.
03:11I will never leave a running playlist.
03:12Oh, no, don't, like,
03:14if somebody finds that.
03:15Exactly.
03:15Like, there's, like,
03:16way too much stain down there.
03:17And I'm just like,
03:17I can't, like,
03:18I can't have anybody.
03:19But there's something,
03:20there's something in my brain,
03:23I wonder if this is the same with you,
03:24there's something just sort of,
03:26I have, like,
03:26either the oxygen leaves it
03:28or something happens
03:29where all of a sudden,
03:30all I care about is, like,
03:31music at 180 BPM.
03:33Totally, dude.
03:34And I just, like,
03:35I do not care what it is.
03:36As long as it has that thing,
03:37that's what I'll do it.
03:38My playlist is all BPM related.
03:41Yeah.
03:41And I did the Hackney Half Marathon
03:43a few weeks ago,
03:44and I just listened to
03:46Paper Planes, MIA, DFA remakes
03:49on a loop the whole time.
03:51Because I wanted to get
03:52my personal record time.
03:54That was,
03:54how did it go?
03:55It went well,
03:56I got it.
03:57On sub 90?
03:59Um, no.
04:00Oh.
04:01But 146.
04:02Oh, that's amazing.
04:03Congrats, that's huge.
04:05Jackson, what's your
04:06marathon record time?
04:08No marathon.
04:10No marathons for me.
04:11Were you a sporting guy
04:12growing up?
04:14Yeah, I was.
04:15I actually ran,
04:16I ran track in high school
04:17and stuff,
04:18but then I just,
04:19as I got older,
04:20I don't know,
04:20I'm like,
04:21I just walk around
04:23in Tim's now
04:24all the time
04:25instead of running.
04:26That's good.
04:27I feel like an old man.
04:28I do marathons of my own.
04:29They're just not running.
04:31You know, kind of.
04:32Do you have a,
04:33do you have an activity
04:34or like a side project
04:35where like a different part
04:36of your like musical self
04:38comes out?
04:39Whether it's like,
04:41whether it's just sort of like
04:42either like walking around
04:43or producing
04:45or remixing
04:46or something like that
04:47where you're just sort of like,
04:48I'm going to get in touch
04:49with something
04:49that I don't really show
04:51to anybody else.
04:53Sometimes I do like
04:54with the remixing.
04:56Yeah.
04:56Because I think you can,
04:57at least for me,
04:58I think what's really fun
05:00is kind of disappearing
05:04into sometimes even
05:05a different genre sphere
05:07than I'm, you know,
05:09usually in.
05:11And a lot of times
05:12with remixes,
05:14because we've done a,
05:15we've done a,
05:16I feel like,
05:17decent amount.
05:18Yeah.
05:18Or also,
05:19I just know the ones
05:19that are about to come out.
05:21So it feels like,
05:22it feels like we've done a lot.
05:23But, you know,
05:25I feel like they always,
05:26with remixes,
05:27it's like you usually
05:27don't get much time
05:29when the artist
05:30or label
05:32commissions you
05:32to do one.
05:33How much time,
05:34like what is the time?
05:35What's the record,
05:36like shortest time?
05:36What's the record,
05:36like you've got to submit
05:38this remix?
05:38I remember the shortest one
05:40was we just did one recently
05:41that was for
05:43the seven inch
05:45release of
05:46house tour
05:47Sabrina Carpenter.
05:48Whoa.
05:49Yeah.
05:50And...
05:51Is that out?
05:51It's,
05:52I think the,
05:54yeah,
05:54the record's supposed
05:55to be out this month.
05:56Oh, cool.
05:56Actually, yeah.
05:57So they pressed it
05:58and I had five days.
06:01Whoa.
06:01And we were on tour,
06:03but this is actually
06:04a perfect example
06:05to answer the other question
06:06because I remember
06:07we were on tour,
06:08got hit up,
06:09and obviously I was like,
06:10oh my God,
06:11five days,
06:12like that's,
06:12and we're,
06:13I'm not even,
06:14don't even have my studio,
06:16really,
06:16but we were in Miami.
06:19We were DJing at Ultra,
06:21this crazy,
06:22EDM music festival,
06:24and a friend of mine,
06:26shout out Jubilee,
06:27the DJ,
06:28who lives in New York,
06:29who's a great DJ,
06:30and she plays a lot of
06:31kind of Miami bass music.
06:34So I was just listening
06:35to Miami bass,
06:36like all day,
06:38even though I don't
06:38really listen to that.
06:39So then when I went
06:40and had five days
06:41for the remix,
06:42I literally,
06:43basically made like
06:45a Miami bass,
06:46like Sabrina Carpenter,
06:48like kind of remix,
06:49you know,
06:50so.
06:50That's amazing.
06:51Yeah,
06:52but I feel like
06:52it's always you get stuff
06:54and it's just,
06:54I always feel like
06:55I end up with remixes,
06:57just remixing it
06:58in the vibe of like
06:59whatever that day
07:01is feeling.
07:02Well,
07:02so much about,
07:03like so much about
07:03dance music
07:04and electronic music,
07:05I mean,
07:05this is true of all music,
07:06but just because
07:07we're talking about this,
07:08like so much of it
07:09is about kind of
07:11almost like hearing
07:12something that you've
07:13never heard before,
07:13and just like this,
07:15I feel like I'm aware
07:16of what Miami bass is,
07:18like I'm aware of
07:20like,
07:20you know,
07:21where it came from,
07:22the sort of like
07:22electro sort of like
07:23sped up kind of thing,
07:24the breakbeat and all that
07:26and the,
07:26you know,
07:26and everything,
07:27but then you sort of,
07:28you're in the right
07:28situation and you're like,
07:30oh,
07:30like it just clicked for me,
07:32right?
07:32Yeah.
07:32And like,
07:33and I think what's great,
07:34and then you sort of,
07:35and then it's like,
07:36oh,
07:36that happens to me,
07:37it's like I'll hear like
07:38a,
07:38like something,
07:40you know,
07:40like a early EBM,
07:43like early like,
07:44so that kind of thing,
07:45I'm just like,
07:45yeah,
07:46I like it,
07:46and then I just hear
07:47somebody DJ with it,
07:48and I'm just like,
07:49oh,
07:49now I get it,
07:50now I want to be like,
07:51now I want to go down
07:51this rabbit hole
07:52of listening to everything
07:53like this,
07:54right?
07:54And I think that's like
07:55what's so great about,
07:57what I love about
07:58your music is that
08:00I kind of feel like
08:01I'm listening to somebody
08:02with like a really
08:03voracious appetite
08:05for a lot of different
08:05types of music.
08:07New record,
08:08Oh,
08:09just came out
08:12on Ninja Tune,
08:13and then there's
08:14a song on there
08:15that I kind of
08:16wanted to start
08:16talking to you about,
08:19it's Butterflies,
08:20and Butterflies,
08:21I think that's one
08:22of my favorite songs
08:23just because it starts
08:24with this,
08:25this kind of almost
08:26like a house piano
08:27thing,
08:28right?
08:28But then it kind of
08:29goes into like
08:30a breakbeat thing,
08:31and I hear,
08:32and it's almost just like,
08:33oh,
08:33I'm hearing you pick
08:34and choose little moments
08:36of things like that,
08:37so I guess,
08:38maybe talk about
08:39Butterflies,
08:39like I think that's
08:40an interesting song,
08:40how did that song
08:41like kind of start
08:42and come about?
08:44I mean,
08:45I feel like with
08:46this album
08:47that we just cut,
08:49especially with,
08:50you know,
08:50Butterflies,
08:51that we were kind
08:51of trying to
08:54do as many combinations
08:56of things as we can.
08:58That was kind of
08:58this idea we had
09:00where we were almost
09:02trying to
09:05re-contextualize
09:06a lot of the club music
09:08from our youth
09:09because our EP,
09:12when we dropped
09:13our EP,
09:14it was a lot more,
09:14I'd say,
09:15like 90s influences
09:17and stuff,
09:18and with this album,
09:19at the time,
09:19once again,
09:20we talked about
09:20just at the time,
09:22her and I were listening
09:23to,
09:23I remember,
09:24we were driving
09:24in the car
09:27and we would just
09:27be listening to,
09:28you know,
09:29Outkast
09:29and N.E.R.D.
09:31and Nelly Hotten here,
09:33and I remember
09:36with Butterflies,
09:37it was kind of like,
09:38that was one of the,
09:39I think towards the later
09:40of when we were
09:41cutting the album
09:42and we were,
09:43and we knew
09:44that we wanted
09:44to do a UKG track,
09:46like on the record.
09:48We were like,
09:48okay, UKG's one,
09:49we want one UKG.
09:51And then I remember
09:53we were kind of using
09:54that Triton,
09:56which is a synth,
09:57like a core Triton,
09:59which was like the,
10:01I mean,
10:01tons of people
10:02have used it,
10:02but it was also like
10:03Pharrell's go-to synth,
10:06you know,
10:07in that big hits era.
10:09So that Triton guitar sound,
10:11that's those,
10:12which is like,
10:13it doesn't sound
10:13like a guitar,
10:14you know,
10:15but it's like,
10:15it's that classic
10:17Nelly Hotten here,
10:18like Pharrell front-in.
10:20So we had used that sound
10:22on a couple,
10:24you know,
10:24on other cuts
10:25on the album
10:25and I remember
10:27like laying down
10:28the chords
10:29and then we were like,
10:30wouldn't it be cool
10:30if it was like Pharrell,
10:32R&B,
10:33but UKG,
10:35you know,
10:36and then try to go
10:38into the chorus
10:38and actually I remember
10:39to the,
10:40when we were working
10:41on that,
10:42we could not figure out
10:44the chords
10:45on the chorus
10:47and it was,
10:47literally all were like,
10:48all right,
10:49no,
10:49I got it
10:50and we were like,
10:50wait,
10:51no,
10:51no,
10:51what is it?
10:52And like,
10:53we're like,
10:53okay,
10:53I've figured it out
10:54and then it wouldn't be
10:55like,
10:56right,
10:56I don't know.
10:57Because yeah,
10:58none of us are like
10:58music theory geniuses,
11:00you know,
11:01it's like,
11:01we usually just plot around
11:03and the chords
11:04for the verses
11:05were kind of jazzy
11:06and I remember
11:07we just were like
11:08trying to find
11:09the combo that worked
11:11and it was,
11:12you know,
11:12when we were in the studio
11:13with Kenny Beats
11:14and Dylan Brady,
11:16it was like,
11:16we'd find one chord
11:17and it'd be like,
11:18oh no,
11:18but that's the one
11:19we were starting with
11:20in the last one
11:21and it was just like,
11:22four of us
11:23could not figure it out
11:24for a second.
11:25Everyone's getting confused
11:26for a while
11:27but yeah,
11:28it got there.
11:28I think that's,
11:29there's so many,
11:30I mean,
11:31there's so many house producers
11:31who kind of stumble
11:33upon brilliance
11:34with,
11:36because composing music
11:37electronically
11:38or like,
11:38you know,
11:39like a DAW,
11:39like,
11:40you have to think differently
11:41than working on a keyboard,
11:42right?
11:43And it's like,
11:43if you're looking,
11:44if you're just sort of like
11:44looking at lines
11:46on a screen,
11:47that's gonna take you
11:48somewhere different
11:48than like knowing
11:49what a G minor 7 flat,
11:51nine chord is.
11:52Right?
11:53And it's like,
11:53I was listening to these
11:54early Cary Chandler records
11:55and it's like,
11:57I don't know how you land,
11:59like,
11:59if you put this in front
12:00of like a jazz piano player,
12:02a classical piano player,
12:03they would never land
12:04on the voicings
12:06that he lands on,
12:07the way it moves,
12:08the way it feels
12:09in a song.
12:10Like,
12:10you listen to like,
12:11Bar Ateem,
12:12or I'm sorry,
12:13I don't,
12:13I,
12:14Welsh or Scottish,
12:15it's not that great.
12:16Anyway,
12:16but like,
12:17you listen to like
12:18how those chords move
12:18in that song
12:19and it's so weird
12:20and it's so disorienting
12:21but you can tell,
12:23I think,
12:23that like he composed it,
12:25use it like visually,
12:27you know?
12:28Yeah.
12:28And that's amazing,
12:29right?
12:29Yeah,
12:30I mean,
12:30most of the time,
12:32I'd actually say like
12:3395% of the time
12:34on our records,
12:35we lay everything down
12:36on the keyboard.
12:37Yeah.
12:37We don't do the writing,
12:38you know,
12:39we actually use a lot
12:40of analog synths and stuff
12:41but I remember with-
12:42You midi into the-
12:43Yeah,
12:43yeah,
12:44yeah.
12:44And mostly we actually
12:45just use like hardware synths
12:47like when on the record,
12:48even the new record
12:49was mostly just playing
12:50in synth bits,
12:52you know,
12:52we didn't even,
12:53we weren't even sending midi
12:54to be honest.
12:55But the thing is
12:57with the chords though,
12:58it was like,
12:59with the Cary Chandler stuff
13:01that I think is so amazing
13:02about dance music
13:03is because so much
13:04of dance music
13:05is sampled.
13:06Yeah.
13:06The reason that
13:07the chord progressions
13:09sound so weird
13:10is because Cary Chandler
13:12for example
13:13or I could name
13:1410 billion other songs,
13:16most of them
13:16were cut this way,
13:17is they would sample,
13:19they would take one chord
13:20from like a jazz record,
13:22put it into the sampler
13:23and then pitch it differently
13:26for the two other chords.
13:27Yeah.
13:27So that's why you're getting
13:28really weird combos
13:30because it's like
13:30a pitched major,
13:32it's like the same chord
13:33pitched different
13:34three ways.
13:36That's so cool.
13:36Because I remember
13:36it took me so long
13:37to figure that out.
13:39By the way,
13:39I listened to these
13:40records and I'd be like,
13:41why did they,
13:42what chord was that?
13:43I'd be looking
13:44at the keyboard
13:44trying to find it
13:46and then eventually
13:46I realized I was like,
13:47oh my God,
13:48they're pitching one chord.
13:50Yeah.
13:51Yeah.
13:51What was it like
13:52to sort of
13:53all of a sudden
13:54go from,
13:56all right,
13:56we're just making this EP,
13:57we're putting it together
13:58with what we got
13:59to like,
14:00I am in a room full
14:02of like six figures
14:04worth of like hardware
14:05to work with.
14:06Was that almost like,
14:07was it too much?
14:08Was it like
14:09Paralyzed Choice,
14:10like how did you
14:11figure out
14:11like what to
14:12gratitude to?
14:13It was funny actually
14:13because on the song
14:14Shake It Up
14:15on our album,
14:16like that's literally
14:17Jackson and I
14:18playing like the two
14:19like worst toy
14:21like keyboards
14:22in Kenny's studio.
14:24Yeah.
14:24It was funny,
14:25like he has like
14:26all these,
14:27like everything
14:28you could ever want
14:29and then like
14:29Jackson and I
14:30just have like
14:31these two little
14:32like baby keyboards.
14:34It was pretty funny.
14:35That's cool,
14:36that's cool.
14:38I wanted to,
14:39I actually,
14:39so I was in the
14:40record store
14:41the other day.
14:43Great record store,
14:44I'll remember the name
14:45of it by the end of it.
14:47And I heard this record,
14:48do you guys know
14:49this record,
14:49Les En Desjardes?
14:51That looks familiar.
14:53Do you guys,
14:53anyone know this record?
14:54Show of hands.
14:55Yeah.
14:56You got one.
14:57This record kicks ass,
14:58right?
14:59This record's great.
15:00So they were playing it
15:01and I was like,
15:02what is this?
15:03And it's one of
15:05the early members
15:06of,
15:08oh my God,
15:09I've been working on
15:09pronouncing this
15:10all weekend,
15:12Einstruzende Neuboten.
15:13Oh wow.
15:14Okay.
15:15Beate Bartel.
15:16Yeah, yeah.
15:17She was like one
15:17of the early members
15:18of Einstruzende.
15:22And she kind of
15:23sings on this record.
15:24I wanted to give you
15:24guys this record
15:25because this record
15:26is a really interesting story.
15:27This is like reverse
15:28narboire
15:28because I don't know
15:29if you guys know
15:29this record,
15:30right?
15:30But I am stealing
15:31kind of his stizz
15:32a little bit.
15:33But I want you guys
15:34to have this record
15:34because there's
15:35a really interesting
15:35story about influence
15:37and how songs travel.
15:39So the second song
15:40on that,
15:42what's the second song
15:43say?
15:43I don't remember.
15:44It's Les Niños
15:45de Parque.
15:46Oh wait,
15:47I know that song.
15:48So that song,
15:49so these were just,
15:53they were making
15:53this music here
15:54and then somehow
15:55that song traveled
15:55to Chicago
15:57and all these
15:57Chicago house people
15:58started playing that song
15:59and people in Chicago
16:00were like,
16:01where can I get
16:01this record?
16:01And then the record
16:02just,
16:03they only printed
16:04so many copies
16:04of the record
16:05and it went out of print
16:06and then it became
16:06like a really sought
16:07after record
16:08for a really long time
16:08because that one song
16:10got played by like
16:11Chicago house teachers
16:11and it does have
16:12a kind of like
16:13high energy
16:13proto house thing
16:15like this sort of,
16:16and then the rest
16:16of the record
16:17is sort of like
16:17kind of punk,
16:19techno.
16:20You'll be blown away
16:21that it was recorded
16:22in 1981.
16:23It's really,
16:24really cool.
16:25But then,
16:25you know,
16:25that song
16:27made its way
16:28to Detroit
16:28and then like
16:29that,
16:29and then Detroit
16:30music made its way
16:31back over to like
16:32Bristol
16:32and like made it
16:33and it's so amazing
16:35to think like
16:35of the provenance
16:36of a song
16:37and how that travels
16:37and it took so long
16:39for a song
16:40to kind of
16:40make its way
16:41into dance music
16:43from people taping
16:44acid like house
16:45in Chicago
16:46and those acid tapes
16:47making its way
16:47over to like
16:48the UK
16:49and that spawning
16:50entire genres
16:51of itself.
16:52You guys talk
16:53about like
16:53how you're like
16:54you wanted to put
16:56so many different
16:58kinds of like music
16:59and so many different
16:59like styles of music
17:00on there.
17:01How do you
17:03think about
17:04influence?
17:05How do you think
17:06about your taste
17:07and putting that
17:08onto a record
17:09and what do you
17:11sort of feel
17:12that you're
17:14like how do you
17:14best capture that
17:15in the moment?
17:17I think influence
17:19is kind of funny
17:20because like
17:21you could be
17:21influenced by things
17:22all the time
17:23that you don't
17:23even realize
17:24in a way
17:25so like
17:26I think there's
17:27sometimes intention
17:28and like
17:29okay like
17:29this is a reference
17:31or this
17:31or stuff like that
17:32but I think also
17:33I don't know
17:35it's interesting
17:35to think about
17:37like
17:38things that are
17:39just inherently
17:39like influencing you
17:41and you might
17:42not even know.
17:42Yeah.
17:43It could be like
17:43surroundings
17:44it could be like
17:45where you grew up
17:46it could be a lot
17:47of things.
17:49Yeah.
17:49It was funny too
17:50because I feel like
17:51with this past record
17:52it was almost like
17:54we kind of didn't
17:55go in saying
17:56this is what it's
17:56going to be
17:57and we have
17:57this concept.
17:59It was
17:59we started to work
18:00on it
18:00and I remember
18:00four to five
18:02tracks in
18:02in the first week
18:04it
18:05themes started
18:06to emerge
18:07and then we
18:08almost started
18:09to go
18:09okay
18:10here's the
18:11through line
18:12we're liking this
18:13and the through line
18:13is feeling like
18:15weird
18:16more minimal
18:17arrangements
18:18kind of
18:19because a lot
18:19of those
18:20references
18:20we were talking
18:21about before
18:21like
18:22the N.E.R.D
18:23the N.E.R.D
18:24the N.E.L.E.
18:25Hotten here
18:25I keep bringing up
18:26but it's like
18:26those songs
18:27have very few
18:28elements actually
18:29in them
18:30you listen to
18:30N.E.L.E.
18:31Hotten here
18:31it's like
18:32four things
18:33yeah
18:33four things
18:35you know
18:35nothing else
18:36so
18:36we felt like
18:37I think the only
18:38kind of parameters
18:39we put around
18:40the album
18:41was
18:42kind of this
18:43it needed to be
18:44hot and minimal
18:45you know
18:46it needed to be
18:47and I think
18:48Kenny was good
18:48about that too
18:49because it's
18:50something we talked
18:50about where
18:51we tried to keep
18:52it we were like
18:52no it needs to be
18:53like hot enough
18:54with just four things
18:56yeah
18:56and then also
18:58we felt like
18:59it would maybe
18:59give
19:00because we were
19:00genre hopping
19:01so much
19:02that it was like
19:03the minimalism
19:04would help
19:04give it
19:05some cohesion
19:07you know
19:09there's
19:09well it's interesting
19:10like working with
19:11Kenny
19:11because Kenny's
19:11being like
19:12I can't wait
19:13you know
19:13I
19:13I'm putting
19:14words in his mouth
19:15but he's like
19:15it seems like
19:16he very much
19:16wants to like
19:17expand beyond
19:18being known
19:19as just like
19:20a hip hop
19:20and rap producer
19:21and then you guys
19:22are like
19:23what about Neptunes
19:24and he's like
19:25oh man
19:25now I'm back
19:26into like
19:27the hip hop
19:27way again
19:28it was funny though
19:29because I feel like
19:30we were like
19:31it was the odd couple
19:32you know
19:33because we went in
19:35not knowing much
19:36about him
19:37like not
19:37you know
19:38I'm being completely honest
19:39and the thing was
19:40when we went into
19:41the studio
19:41to meet him
19:43the Geese album
19:45had not come out
19:46so it wasn't like
19:48everyone was talking
19:50about Kenny Beats
19:52there was this
19:53Kenny Beats
19:53renaissance
19:54it was kind of like
19:55no one knew
19:56he had stopped touring
19:57his solo stuff
19:58he had kind of
19:59gone away
20:00for a year
20:01to build his studio
20:02so it was kind of like
20:03he had been laying low
20:05and we didn't know
20:08that much
20:08and it was funny
20:09because when we
20:09went in to meet
20:10it was like
20:11he had just finished
20:13the Geese album
20:14recording it
20:15oh wow
20:15and he was getting
20:16mixes back
20:16and I remember
20:17he was like
20:18I just finished
20:19this record
20:20it's really weird
20:21I just finished
20:22this really weird
20:23record
20:24and he played it
20:25for us
20:26and I remember
20:26we were like
20:27well that's not
20:29hip hop
20:29you know
20:30because we just
20:31thought he was like
20:31hip hop guy
20:32and the only demo
20:34we had
20:35was one of
20:36Feel the Real
20:37the last track
20:38on the album
20:39which was like
20:39the most down tempo
20:41I remember him
20:43saying that
20:43he was like
20:44well this isn't
20:46like Bon Bon
20:46you know
20:47and then it was
20:48kind of
20:49we had this
20:49double take
20:52kind of moment
20:53and started
20:54working together
20:55but I think
20:56the weird combination
20:57really worked
20:58because it was funny
20:59there was this
21:00like push and pull
21:02where
21:02I think
21:03every time
21:04I kept wanting
21:05to go house
21:06on everything
21:06and he like
21:07ugh
21:07you know
21:08I need to go
21:09house
21:09you know
21:12shrink those high hats
21:13down a little bit more
21:14you know
21:15I mean I think
21:16you and
21:17you and Geese
21:18are kind of
21:18in very similar positions
21:19is that all of a sudden
21:20you've got like
21:22the amount of people
21:24listening to your music
21:25or like looking at you
21:25has grown exponentially
21:27in a very short
21:28amount of time
21:31and how does that
21:32play with
21:33your
21:35how does that play
21:36with like the timeline
21:37of the band
21:38right
21:38like
21:39because when you start
21:40you're just like
21:40I'm just making music
21:41like I don't know
21:42but then all of a sudden
21:44you're like
21:45oh this could be a career
21:46like this
21:47like now I have to think
21:48about it as like
21:49a step
21:50right
21:50like this is
21:51the next step
21:52in the thing
21:53right
21:53and I'm like
21:54Geese are thinking
21:54about that right now
21:55it's like
21:56you know
21:56we're like
21:57whatever
21:58like we're gonna
21:58try to do
21:59like a story
22:00with them
22:00and their management
22:03and publicist
22:04was like
22:04and they were
22:05gonna put out
22:06like a new record
22:06they're like
22:07they've got music
22:08you know
22:08like I'm sure
22:09you guys have music
22:10going on
22:11right
22:11but their
22:13publicist
22:13and management
22:14were like
22:15a record like this
22:16comes around
22:16once in a lifetime
22:17ride this wave
22:18for as long
22:19as possible
22:20right
22:20and I'm
22:22and I'm curious
22:22like how
22:23when you first
22:24started
22:25like did you
22:26plan on being
22:27like all right
22:27we're gonna
22:27we're gonna do
22:28like this
22:28this this
22:28this this
22:29and did that
22:30change
22:30no I mean
22:31when we first
22:32started
22:32we literally
22:33had no intention
22:34of anything
22:35like
22:36yeah
22:37that's beautiful
22:38we just kind of
22:39wanted to
22:40make music
22:41for fun
22:41and for us
22:42because we both
22:43like we had both
22:44been in dance
22:45before
22:47and separately
22:48in our own
22:49like before we
22:50even met
22:50we were both
22:51kind of like
22:52starting to experiment
22:53making electronic
22:54music
22:55and
22:55and then
22:56when we met
22:57it was kind of
22:58like oh
22:58should we just
22:58like mess around
23:00and like maybe
23:01make some songs
23:02and we did
23:03but we never
23:04had any plan
23:05of like
23:05okay we're gonna
23:06put this out
23:07and then we're
23:07gonna go on tour
23:08and then
23:08like we literally
23:09thought we'd play
23:10one show ever
23:11for our friends
23:12like for fun
23:13and
23:14and that would be
23:15that
23:15it was
23:16there was like
23:16a weird actually
23:17when we started
23:18there was kind of
23:19this weird
23:21nihilism
23:21to like
23:22I feel like
23:23the way
23:23we were viewing
23:24it because
23:24when we met
23:25what we both
23:26had in common
23:27is that
23:28we had played
23:28in bands
23:29for years
23:30you know
23:31hers had had
23:32had a lot more
23:33success than mine
23:34did I always
23:34played in incredibly
23:36failed bands
23:37you know
23:38like one after
23:39another
23:39but
23:40but I was content
23:41I was living in New York
23:42I was DJing
23:43all the time
23:44you know
23:44I was partying a lot
23:45and whatever
23:46but I literally
23:46thought in my head
23:47the thing we had
23:48kind of in common
23:49was we were like
23:49well
23:49we're 25 now
23:51so we kind of
23:52missed the boat
23:53we're too old
23:54for the music industry
23:56and
23:57we kind of
23:58were like
23:59you know
23:59forgive the explicative
24:01but we were like
24:02fuck it
24:03you know
24:03what we talked about
24:04when we met
24:05was
24:05fuck it
24:06we just want to
24:07make music for fun
24:08we kind of
24:10missed the boat
24:10on having a music career
24:12this was like
24:12an honest thing
24:13we talked about
24:13and we were like
24:14but we're cool with that
24:15and I had a French
24:17Connection hoodie
24:17at the time
24:18that I thrifted
24:19and the band name
24:21came out of that
24:22because we had
24:22had those conversations
24:24and we were like
24:24man that perfectly
24:26encapsulates
24:27the thesis statement
24:30of kind of
24:31just us screaming
24:32and like
24:32fuck it
24:32like not
24:33commercially
24:35viable
24:36no I literally
24:36remember
24:37like we finally
24:38finished
24:39the first song
24:40that we put out
24:41and I was like
24:42wait Jackson
24:42one sec
24:43like what are we
24:43gonna
24:43what's our name
24:44and he was like
24:45I have this idea
24:46like fuckers
24:48and I was like
24:48okay yeah
24:49that sounds good
24:50like I don't know
24:51I didn't even think
24:52about it
24:52because like
24:53it wasn't like
24:54because you weren't
24:55thinking about
24:55what it was gonna be
24:56and it was just like
24:57fuck it
24:57and I remember like
24:58I think my grandma
25:00was like
25:00how are they gonna
25:01ever like
25:02play you on the radio
25:03and I was like
25:04I don't know
25:04like don't know
25:06not my problem
25:06yeah
25:08because I never even
25:09thought that would be
25:10like a thing
25:10you know
25:11like it was just
25:12really for fun
25:13and for us
25:14what was the
25:16before you
25:17before you started
25:17this band
25:18what bands
25:19were you in
25:19before then
25:20and actually
25:21to give a
25:22more color
25:23to this question
25:24what was the
25:24first time
25:25you performed
25:25a song you wrote
25:26on stage
25:28oh
25:28um
25:29the
25:29um
25:32the stage one
25:33I don't know
25:35I can't even remember
25:36maybe at like
25:36an open mic
25:37in New York City
25:38yeah
25:39when I was like
25:4015 or 16
25:41or something
25:42what kind of
25:42open mics
25:43were you going to
25:43um
25:44sidewalk cafe
25:45R.I.P
25:46R.I.P
25:48yeah
25:50but um
25:51yeah
25:52what other
25:53like
25:54what were you trying
25:54to write
25:56when you were 15
25:58I don't even know
25:59yeah
25:59yeah
26:00just like
26:00love songs
26:01I guess
26:02but you just
26:03wanted to be in front
26:03like
26:03were you just like
26:04I just want to be
26:05in front of people
26:05and play this
26:07I don't really know
26:08I think they just
26:09like would take
26:10my fake ID there
26:13that's great
26:14yeah
26:15that's great
26:15uh
26:16what about you
26:16what was the first time
26:17like you played something
26:18that you
26:18that you produced
26:19that you put in front of people
26:20you slip it into
26:22DJ sets
26:22nah
26:23there was the
26:24first time
26:26I played something
26:27I wrote
26:27it was probably my band
26:28in high school
26:29yeah
26:30what were they called
26:30it was called
26:31Finding X
26:33because I really liked
26:35the Sneaker Pimps album
26:37Becoming X
26:37yeah
26:38that was like
26:38my favorite album
26:39when I was in high school
26:40okay
26:41is that
26:41Spin Spin Sugar
26:42yep
26:43is on that
26:43that was my favorite record
26:45of course
26:46we sounded nothing
26:47like Sneaker Pimps
26:49um
26:49it was kind of bad
26:51like rap rock
26:53actually
26:54our singer would kind of rap
26:55and we would do
26:57Rage Against the Machine
26:58cover
26:59oh my god
26:59me too
27:00that kind of stuff
27:01yeah
27:01it was sick
27:02and I remember like
27:02our keyboard player's mom
27:04would get so upset
27:06in the Rage songs
27:07when we'd start like
27:08doing all the cursing
27:09you know
27:10and
27:11but we played
27:12there was a church school
27:14near where I grew up
27:15called
27:15Our Lady of Good Counsel
27:17is what it was called
27:18and the first show
27:19I ever played
27:20was
27:20yes
27:21Our Lady of Good Counsel
27:23Fair
27:24That's beautiful
27:25in the parking lot
27:27oh yeah
27:27we drove by there
27:28recently
27:29and Jackson showed me
27:30to ten people
27:31and we played
27:32we played all covers
27:34except one song
27:35that we had composed
27:36and um
27:38I don't even know
27:39what to say about it
27:40it was like
27:40so
27:41so weird
27:42like genre-less
27:43I remember people
27:44going in
27:45were like
27:45no
27:46describe the sound
27:47what's it gonna be
27:48and I was like
27:48I don't even know
27:49like you can't describe it
27:50and then afterwards
27:51they were like
27:51you're right
27:51I don't even know
27:54what that was
27:54you know
27:55I was
27:56I was in a band
27:56when I was in high school
27:57um
27:58called
27:58Resurrected Grooves
28:00okay
28:00a funk rock band
28:03yeah
28:03and we did
28:04and we covered
28:04Incubus
28:05as was the style
28:06at the time
28:06um
28:07and we did
28:08we covered
28:09Killing in the Name
28:10um
28:11and
28:12I remember
28:13we were playing
28:14like a local
28:14like
28:15Fourth of July Fair
28:16in this pavilion
28:17in this tiny town
28:18and there was just
28:19like five people
28:20in the audience
28:21in the lawn chairs
28:22yeah
28:23and I was like
28:24and I sang
28:24I had to like
28:25sing the song
28:25I played saxophone
28:26and I sang the song
28:27and next on the set list
28:28was Killing in the Name
28:29and I was like
28:29we don't need
28:30to do this right now
28:31yeah
28:32but the drummer was like
28:33no we're doing it
28:34and he started
28:36and me
28:37and the guitarist
28:37were like
28:38we're not doing this song
28:39but the bassist
28:40and the drummer
28:40were like
28:40no we're doing this song
28:42and we were having
28:43this like fight
28:43on stage
28:44of like
28:44whether we were going
28:45to perform
28:45a Rage Against the Machine
28:46song
28:47for five people
28:48in the audience
28:49and it was a very tense
28:50moment in the band
28:51high school egos
28:52are crazy
28:53I was just like
28:55read the room man
28:55we're not going to do
28:56this long right now
28:57I can't do that
29:01so when you were growing up
29:02is there somebody
29:03who kind of
29:06is responsible
29:07for like putting you
29:08on to like
29:09the path of music
29:10that you got onto
29:11and like
29:12how did they do that
29:14kind of for either of you
29:16I feel like
29:17my best friend's
29:18older cousin
29:19put me onto
29:20Sublime
29:20and it changed my life
29:21whoa
29:22when
29:22I was like
29:2512 or 13
29:27yeah
29:27just gave you
29:29like the Sublime record
29:29and be like
29:30this is the truth
29:31yeah I played it
29:32at like my high school
29:33wow
29:34like I played
29:35Santeria
29:36yes
29:37with the guitar solo
29:38and everything
29:39yeah my friend
29:40played the solo
29:41I played bass
29:42and sang
29:42nice
29:42nice
29:43that's good
29:44did they
29:45did your friend's
29:46cousins
29:46wait
29:47what was the relationship
29:48my friend's cousin
29:49your friend's cousin
29:50did they put you
29:50onto more stuff
29:51no
29:52no just that
29:53just that
29:53that unlocked
29:54that unlocked
29:55that was all I needed
29:57all anyone needs
29:58Sublime
29:59self-titled
30:00maybe 40 ounces
30:01to freedom
30:01if you really want
30:02to go for it too
30:02yeah
30:03what about you
30:05I feel like
30:06I mean there was obviously
30:07like a lot of people
30:08over the course
30:09of my life
30:10that you know
30:11influenced me
30:12in some way
30:12but I feel like
30:13a big one
30:14was my cousin
30:16who's older than me
30:17and was always
30:18kind of the like
30:19cool cousin
30:19in the family
30:20I feel like
30:21everyone's got that
30:22cool older cousin
30:23who's like
30:24showing up
30:25to the family
30:26engagements
30:27and they're always
30:28like really hung over
30:29yeah
30:29you know
30:30and like you're like
30:31when you're younger
30:31you're like
30:32oh wow
30:32like that's the cool one
30:34that's the going
30:35for a walk
30:35on Thanksgiving
30:35yes
30:36but my cousin
30:37Jesse
30:38yeah
30:38my older cousin
30:39Jesse
30:40was a DJ
30:41in New York
30:42and used to
30:43spin all the time
30:44turntablist
30:45like really amazing
30:47hands of lightning
30:48and I remember
30:49he
30:50we got closer
30:51kind of
30:52as I got older
30:53and
30:54he's the one
30:55who really pushed me
30:56to start making music again
30:58because I kind of had
30:59quit these bands
31:00was DJing
31:01and I remember
31:01we had this one
31:02him and I got lunch
31:04and I just was going
31:05on and on
31:06about all this
31:0790's house
31:08I loved
31:09and Daft Punk
31:10and you know
31:11Justice
31:11and all that stuff
31:12and he turned to me
31:13and he was like
31:13I want you
31:14to try to make
31:16something like that
31:18you know
31:18and he was very
31:21he was always very
31:22protective of me
31:23in the beginning
31:24because when I started
31:26to do the club circuit
31:27in New York
31:28which was something
31:30he had done
31:30you know
31:3110 years before
31:32he really didn't
31:33want me to get stuck
31:35in just like
31:36partying all the time
31:37and just being
31:38a club DJ
31:38he really was adamant
31:40that like
31:41I needed to
31:42go back
31:43and like
31:44try to make music
31:45yeah
31:45kind of
31:46but yeah
31:46well there is sort of
31:47like a longstanding
31:48tradition of like
31:49DJs being like
31:50I just want to be
31:50in a band
31:51you know
31:51like it's just like
31:52I'm so sick of playing
31:54my music
31:55other people's music
31:55like I want to like
31:56strap something
31:57around my neck
31:58and play that
32:00I mean there's
32:01it just
32:02the whole history
32:03of music
32:03there's plenty
32:04of examples of that
32:05and I think like
32:05what's really interesting
32:07about that
32:08is that
32:08the hybrid
32:09of
32:10the sort of
32:11the DJ turned band
32:12the band turned DJ
32:13is that
32:15you kind of
32:16get to meld
32:17these two
32:18energies of music
32:19where like
32:20so much about
32:21like I'm making an album
32:22it's like
32:23oh I'm making something
32:23kind of permanent
32:24right
32:24I am making something
32:25like
32:26oh it's just like
32:27well that's
32:28that's it
32:28front of like
32:29that's the album
32:30and it's going
32:31to always be like
32:32that forever
32:32right
32:33but like when you're
32:34doing a DJ set
32:34it's like
32:35well it's different
32:35every single time
32:36right
32:36and like
32:37I think like
32:37I think there's
32:38something really
32:39interesting and
32:39really fascinating
32:40and I sometimes
32:41struggle to
32:42articulate it
32:43because I think
32:44like as a writer
32:45I think it's so much
32:46more easy to explain
32:47why I like
32:48an album
32:49that has like
32:50permanence
32:50because I like
32:51writing about
32:52something permanent
32:52you feel like
32:53you can get your
32:53head around it
32:54it's not moving
32:55or anything
32:56but then sometimes
32:56I'll listen to like
32:57club music
32:57or like
32:58house music
32:58I'm just like
32:59I don't know
32:59how to describe
33:00like I don't know
33:00how to write
33:01about this
33:01you know
33:02it's sometimes
33:02it defies explanation
33:04you know
33:04it's like
33:04like DJ Sprinkles
33:06like it's a situation
33:07you know
33:08and yeah
33:09like I don't know
33:10it's context
33:12you know
33:12and I think
33:13that's something
33:14that is so important
33:15to think about
33:17even as we go
33:18into this AI age
33:19is I really believe
33:21art has to exist
33:23within context
33:24it doesn't have to
33:26but when it doesn't
33:27that's what an AI song
33:29that's uploaded
33:30with no human live show
33:33no cover art
33:34no story behind it
33:36that's art
33:36that's not within
33:37any context
33:38and for that reason
33:39you could upload
33:41500,000 AI songs a day
33:44but because they don't
33:46sit within context
33:47it for the large part
33:50it doesn't touch culture
33:51it doesn't
33:52you know
33:52club hits
33:54or you know
33:55in specific
33:56like you know
33:57not in specific
33:58but you can use
33:59any example
34:00Robin S
34:01Show Me Love
34:02or Basement Jack's
34:04Where's Your Head At
34:04you know
34:05those are great songs
34:06obviously
34:06they're indisputable
34:08great songs
34:09but part of it
34:10is also that
34:11when it comes on
34:12in the club
34:12everyone knows it
34:14and there's a communal
34:16context
34:17and part of the experience
34:20is hearing that song
34:22in a room full of people
34:24who you also know
34:26that everyone else knows it
34:28or as you said
34:28like when hearing that
34:29EBM song played
34:32in that context
34:33or you know
34:35it's like
34:35that's why they talk
34:36about DJing
34:37it's like
34:37sometimes a song
34:38sounds different
34:39because it was played
34:41after this other song
34:43contextually
34:43or it was played
34:44at the end of the night
34:46and it was a disco song
34:48but the DJ was playing
34:50techno the whole night
34:51and then it came
34:52out of left
34:53or you were on drugs
34:54and you know
34:56the ecstasy was good
34:57or whatever
34:58and that's the context
35:00you know
35:00yeah there's like
35:01there's a famous example
35:03of I don't know
35:04I think it was like
35:04Ricardo Villalobos
35:05playing Ravel's Bolero
35:07like at New Year's Eve
35:09at like Panorama Bar
35:11and I'm just like
35:12who can get away
35:13with playing Ravel
35:15like in a DJ set
35:16and people just talk about it
35:17it's just like
35:18you had to be there
35:19like it was
35:20I think it was
35:21some edit or remix
35:23of it
35:23or something like that
35:24but it was
35:24you know
35:25it wasn't like
35:25there wasn't like
35:26a 808 bass underneath it
35:27it was just
35:28just the stuff like that
35:29I guess like
35:31and maybe Shani
35:31you can kind of
35:32like speak to this too
35:33is that
35:34if you're on stage
35:35like how do you
35:36how do you bring
35:37that energy of like
35:38surprise and context
35:39like now that you
35:40have a band
35:42I mean I think
35:43it's like
35:44it's actually funny
35:45because on our
35:46first show ever
35:47after having like
35:48toured in kind of
35:50a dreamy indie band
35:51for years
35:52and like
35:52sang really soft
35:53and played the bass
35:55and like
35:55I think it was
35:57kind of like
35:57I had
35:58on our first show ever
36:00like I had
36:00a really different
36:01experience on stage
36:03than I had ever had
36:04where I was just like
36:04jumping around
36:06and dancing
36:07and like
36:07interacting with people
36:09in the crowd way more
36:10and
36:11I think like
36:12we always have
36:13wanted it to
36:15feel like that
36:16like it's like
36:17we're all here
36:18dance party together
36:20instead of like
36:21we're performing
36:22and you're watching us
36:23you know
36:24yeah
36:24yeah
36:25and I mean
36:25obviously
36:26this is going to sound
36:27extremely facile
36:29but just like
36:29when you're at a band
36:30it's you
36:31it's like
36:32it's your music on stage
36:33and it's your eyes
36:34it's your body
36:35it's like
36:36it's a little bit more
36:37of a
36:38there's less of a filter there
36:39like if you're
36:40you know
36:40if you're DJing
36:41or just sort of
36:41or like
36:41it's sort of like
36:42well it's other people's music
36:43you know
36:44at slightly different tempos
36:45you know
36:45like that's
36:46you know
36:46not to oversimplify it
36:47but like
36:48when you're putting yourself
36:49out there
36:50there is
36:50there is like risk to that
36:51right
36:51like there is
36:52especially when you're
36:53doing new things
36:54especially if you're
36:55in a different environment
36:55especially if you're trying
36:57to keep it interesting
36:58for yourselves on stage
36:59and being like
37:00oh man
37:00it's the end of the tour
37:01like
37:01we gotta figure out
37:03a new way to do this song
37:04because like
37:05it's lost
37:06for me
37:07or like
37:07I'm tired today
37:08and I can't do the
37:10like
37:11the stage guy
37:12I can't be stage guy today
37:13we have to do something different
37:14are there
37:15are there moments
37:16from this last tour
37:16where you had to be like
37:17alright
37:18we gotta change this song up
37:19because like
37:20it's lost that
37:21to me
37:23I mean I think
37:24sometimes yeah
37:25we like change up
37:27the set list a bit
37:28but I feel like
37:28it's all just based on
37:30yeah
37:30like how it's feeling to us
37:32and like
37:32I don't know
37:34yeah
37:34yeah
37:36you guys are doing
37:37a couple DJ sets
37:38coming up
37:38what do you
37:39like to play
37:40right now
37:42I think it's like
37:43it just is all
37:45you know
37:45context once again
37:47of like where we are
37:48you know usually
37:49so it was like
37:50we were just in
37:52Paris
37:52on Tuesday
37:54and we did an after party
37:55where we went
37:56back to back
37:57with Cassius
37:59Hubert
38:00you know
38:00boom bass
38:01from Cassius
38:02and like
38:03you know
38:03a hero of mine
38:04the first club 12 inch
38:06I ever bought
38:06was Cassius
38:07and so for that night
38:08we played a lot of like
38:10you know
38:10groovy
38:11kind of like
38:11French house
38:12kind of stuff
38:13but then we
38:14you know
38:15two weeks ago
38:16we were in Manchester
38:17and we did an after party
38:19there
38:19and I was playing
38:20Dizzy Rascal
38:22Baseline Junkie
38:23you know what I mean
38:24so it's
38:24I think it's
38:25wherever we are
38:26you know
38:27switch it up
38:28what are you guys
38:29getting better at
38:30as a band
38:33getting better at
38:35taking naps
38:36yeah
38:36yeah
38:37it's important
38:37yeah I'm not so good
38:39at it
38:39disco naps
38:40yeah
38:41yeah I just like
38:41I'll never sleep
38:42and then it'll
38:43I'll just be like
38:44so tired
38:44and just be like
38:45ah
38:46yeah
38:47I had to
38:48I one time
38:49like I couldn't sleep
38:50and I was like
38:52having a panic attack
38:53so I was like
38:53I need to sleep
38:53I'm losing my mind
38:54and I like
38:56panic downloaded
38:56Headspace
38:58and then
38:59and then I was like
39:00where is the
39:01where's the sleep meditation
39:02and I like
39:02I'm sitting in bed
39:03I'm like going
39:04trying to go through it
39:05and then one of the things
39:06that it did
39:07it was like
39:07the strategy is count down
39:09from 10,000
39:10like say it over and over
39:12it's like counting sheep
39:13but as opposed to going up
39:14you're counting down
39:15yeah
39:15and you're
39:16and it's just sort of
39:16like a very simple task
39:18to let your mind
39:19like turn off of everything else
39:21and just focus on one task
39:24yeah
39:24and like that
39:25helped me so hard
39:26so
39:27I give that to you
39:28I give that to anybody
39:28thank you
39:29who has Insomio
39:30you don't even have to download
39:31the Headspace app
39:33that's
39:33that's a freebie
39:36I know you guys have talked about
39:39sort of
39:39you didn't even
39:41none of this was planned
39:42right
39:43but
39:44now that
39:45now that there is
39:46something kind of
39:48permanent
39:48underneath you
39:50and there is like
39:51a kind of base layer
39:52like
39:52where
39:54and I know this is
39:55this is a bad question
39:56but
39:56let me
39:57say it's a bad question
39:58but then ask it
39:59where do you see yourself
40:01in five years
40:08maybe like
40:09making some more songs
40:11cool
40:12dope
40:13beating your
40:14beating your marathon record
40:15yeah
40:16maybe beating my marathon record
40:18and making some more songs
40:20yeah
40:20yeah
40:21yeah
40:21yeah
40:22I feel like there's a lot of albums
40:23that we want to make
40:24yeah
40:25you know
40:25that's the only thing I know
40:26for sure
40:27I mean
40:27I truly believe in living in the moment
40:30you know
40:30I think otherwise
40:31like you're gonna
40:32have a panic attack
40:34touring this much
40:35if you're not just
40:36living in the present
40:38but
40:38I mean there's so many
40:39kind of albums
40:40that we want to make
40:41and I think the beauty of
40:42of
40:43genre hopping
40:45like we've done
40:46you know
40:47is that
40:48I feel like
40:48we kind of can go anywhere
40:50yeah
40:50and
40:51we're definitely
40:52gonna go in some
40:53different directions
40:55you're gonna utilize
40:56the EP format
40:57a little bit more
40:58I don't know
40:59I have no idea
41:00honestly
41:01you know
41:02go with the flow
41:03it's such a
41:04I mean it's such like
41:05in dance music
41:06like the EP
41:07is just like the
41:08you know
41:08is the format
41:09it's like the four track
41:10for sure
41:11and it's
41:13you know
41:13it's a tool
41:14but it's also sort of like
41:16gives you a chance
41:17to test out stuff
41:18right
41:19you know
41:19and I think
41:20I think it's
41:21I think obviously
41:22in the sort of modern
41:24mainstream market space
41:25it's a hard sell
41:26to convince like
41:27your team to be like
41:27hey we're gonna push
41:28this like four track EP
41:29it's like
41:29how
41:29what am I
41:30what am I
41:30you know
41:31what am I gonna do here man
41:32yeah
41:33like
41:33like that
41:34that can
41:34that can be tricky
41:35like is there
41:36now that
41:37now that you're sort of like
41:38in the gears of everything
41:40do you find
41:41that the impulse
41:42the
41:43the fuck it impulse
41:44that you started with
41:45is bumping up against
41:47the sort of
41:48industry
41:49mechanisms
41:49and how are you dealing
41:51with it like
41:51and cut those
41:52compromises
41:53and roadblocks
41:57I mean
41:57this is a Primavera
41:58pro conference
41:59I think that like
42:01we always
42:02no matter what
42:03just try to make
42:04stuff that feels
42:05true to us
42:06and like
42:06we have kind of
42:08a really good
42:09like mutual
42:10understanding
42:11that like
42:11if it doesn't feel
42:12good to one of us
42:13like it's not
42:14the right
42:14whatever it is
42:15whether it's like
42:16a song thing
42:17or a picture
42:18or whatever
42:18but um
42:19yeah I don't know
42:21I feel like
42:21it's always kind of
42:23been for us
42:24and it still
42:25feels that way
42:26yeah
42:27I think too
42:28it's like
42:28yeah she said
42:29I think it's kind of
42:30the core tenant
42:31of our working
42:31relationship
42:32is that we have
42:33so much faith
42:34in the other one
42:35that if one of us
42:36doesn't like it
42:37we don't even
42:38push the other one
42:38we don't even
42:39go no it's good
42:40yeah
42:40we go
42:41it must be wrong
42:42yeah
42:43find a new solution
42:44you know
42:45yeah
42:46but I think there was
42:48I think more so
42:49going into this record
42:50there obviously was
42:52a lot of
42:53pressure
42:54you know
42:55that was put on
42:56from the industry
42:58ourselves
42:59the
43:00because I think
43:00when you're like
43:01a kind of
43:02a hype band
43:03or whatever
43:04people are
43:05looking for any
43:07opportunity
43:08to
43:09to
43:09chop you down
43:11you know
43:12um
43:13but
43:14I think in a way
43:16you know
43:16yeah
43:18the struggle
43:19was
43:19you know
43:20and we've
43:20talked about it
43:21a bit
43:21in some
43:22interviews
43:22but
43:22we felt
43:23like we were
43:24in this
43:25kind of
43:25odd
43:26situation
43:26because
43:27our EP
43:29was kind of
43:30treated like
43:30a debut record
43:31in terms of
43:32how it got
43:33reviewed
43:33we ended up
43:34touring on it
43:35the world
43:36for a year
43:37we played
43:37Primavera
43:38last year
43:39with just an EP
43:40out
43:40you know
43:41it's like
43:41crazy
43:41no one expected
43:42that to come
43:43from just
43:44an EP
43:45so
43:46we had
43:46the problem
43:47of
43:48we have
43:49to make
43:49a debut
43:50record
43:50you know
43:51and you have
43:52the pressure
43:52of that
43:52but it was
43:53also kind
43:54of like
43:54a sophomore
43:55record
43:56kind of
43:57so it was
43:57like
43:57well how do
43:58we move
43:59it
43:59you know
44:01but I think
44:02you know
44:03you know
44:04we're very
44:05proud of
44:05the record
44:06and I think
44:06now that
44:07we have
44:07a bit more
44:08as you said
44:09a bit more
44:09foundation
44:10to stand on
44:11I actually
44:11feel as an
44:12artist
44:13that it's
44:14so freeing
44:14and something
44:15I've really
44:16been thinking
44:17about more
44:18recently
44:18is you know
44:19is going
44:20back to
44:20slow art
44:21you know
44:23which is
44:23I think
44:24just taking
44:25time on
44:26things
44:27you know
44:27which I know
44:28is so
44:29not what anyone
44:30wants to do
44:30right now
44:31because it's
44:31just pump
44:32pump
44:32pump
44:32get stuff
44:33out
44:33pump
44:33pump
44:34and sometimes
44:34you have
44:35deadlines
44:35you know
44:36that you
44:36gotta hit
44:36but anytime
44:38I've done
44:39a remix
44:39where it's
44:40like they only
44:41give you a week
44:41they only
44:42give you two
44:42weeks
44:42it's never
44:44as good
44:44as the one
44:45where I had
44:47five months
44:48even just to
44:49sit on it
44:50you know
44:50and not listen
44:51to it for two
44:52months
44:52and then return
44:53to it
44:53and I was
44:54talking to
44:54Hubert
44:55like two nights
44:56ago from
44:56Cassius
44:57and he was
44:57like they
44:58would spend
44:59you know
44:59years on
45:00their albums
45:01I mean
45:01that used
45:01to be
45:02the common
45:02place
45:03bands
45:03would make
45:03an album
45:04and then
45:04go away
45:05you know
45:06make another
45:07I remember
45:08when I was
45:08a kid
45:09like last
45:09thing I'll
45:10say
45:10but it
45:10was like
45:12Kasabian
45:12I don't know
45:12if you remember
45:13that
45:13when I was
45:14a kid
45:14Clubfoot
45:14yeah
45:15Clubfoot
45:15I loved
45:16that record
45:16that was
45:17my favorite
45:18record
45:18that
45:18whatever
45:19that year
45:19in elementary
45:20school
45:20every single
45:21day
45:21I listen
45:21to it
45:21and I
45:22remember
45:24there was
45:24a show
45:25called
45:26Subterranean
45:26on VH1
45:27that would
45:28just run
45:28music videos
45:29like new
45:29music videos
45:30and I
45:31waited
45:32patiently
45:33for like
45:34two and a half
45:35years
45:35for their next
45:36single
45:36you know
45:37and they just
45:38went away
45:38you know
45:39and I remember
45:40I waited
45:40and I remember
45:41when it came out
45:42it was Empire
45:43and like the music
45:44video came out
45:45and I was like
45:45oh my god
45:46thank you
45:47you know
45:47and now
45:48it's like
45:48expected
45:49that it's like
45:50it's insane
45:51the heroin
45:51it's like
45:52you put out
45:53Brat
45:53and now you have
45:54another album
45:54it's just like
45:55it's crazy
45:56feed the beast
45:57feed the beast
45:58yeah
45:58yeah
46:00what's
46:01I'll end
46:02with a couple
46:03questions
46:03and then we'll
46:04turn it over
46:04to the audience
46:04see if they have
46:05anything they want
46:05to ask you
46:06what's the
46:07best advice
46:09somebody who's
46:10been in this
46:11industry for a
46:11long time
46:12has given you
46:13recently
46:14or just something
46:15you've sort of
46:15been like
46:15alright
46:16I'm going to
46:16squirrel that
46:17away
46:17remember that
46:24I got one
46:26it actually was
46:27not from someone
46:28in the music
46:29industry
46:29actually
46:30but it is
46:31probably the
46:32best advice
46:33I've ever
46:33received
46:34I remember
46:35it was kind
46:35of in the
46:36early days
46:36of us
46:37when stuff
46:38started to
46:38move a little
46:39bit
46:39but a friend
46:40of mine
46:41a friend
46:41of ours
46:42actually
46:42Rob Chan
46:43in New York
46:44who's like
46:45I think
46:45he's like
46:46he teaches
46:48at like
46:49FIT
46:50or something
46:51in New York
46:51he's like
46:52fashion business
46:52he has one
46:53class
46:53and he told
46:55me
46:55he said
46:56don't focus
46:58on results
46:59focus on
47:01momentum
47:03and that was
47:04always something
47:05that to this
47:06day
47:07stuck with me
47:08and I remember
47:09in our early
47:10days
47:10it was
47:12that was
47:12like the
47:13credo
47:13that I always
47:14went by
47:14in my head
47:14and I just
47:15was trying
47:16to
47:16I wasn't
47:17thinking
47:17big picture
47:18I just
47:19was thinking
47:20month to
47:21month
47:21how to
47:23keep it
47:23moving
47:23like that
47:24month
47:25what were
47:25the little
47:26things
47:26that we
47:27could do
47:28to just
47:29keep growth
47:30you know
47:30and it
47:31wasn't this
47:32hey let's
47:33play Coachella
47:34and we need
47:35to get to
47:35it was just
47:37smaller things
47:38momentum
47:39momentum
47:40momentum
47:40and if you
47:41focus on
47:42momentum
47:42then I think
47:44results come
47:45yeah
47:46you know
47:47that's good
47:48advice
47:48what are you
47:49sharing
47:50yeah I'm
47:51trying to
47:51think of
47:52like something
47:53someone in
47:55the industry
47:55has said
47:56to me
47:59kind of
48:00blanking
48:00right now
48:02but yeah
48:03maybe I'll
48:04think on that
48:04for a second
48:05there's a
48:05well there's
48:06a story
48:07that
48:08it's a really
48:09funny story
48:10that like
48:10I think it
48:11was Kim
48:11Gordon
48:12told
48:13no no
48:14David Byrne
48:14told Kim
48:16Gordon
48:16who told
48:18Katie Crutchfield
48:21of Waxahachie
48:22just like
48:23after your first
48:23record buy a house
48:24just like
48:25you have enough
48:26money
48:26because you
48:27never know
48:27what's going
48:27to happen
48:28and you always
48:29need a place
48:30you just need
48:31a place to live
48:31and I was
48:32I'm like
48:33I love that
48:34like that
48:34got like
48:35passed down
48:36to like
48:37a third
48:37generation
48:38of like
48:38rock
48:39like indie
48:40rock people
48:40and I think
48:41that was
48:41I think
48:42that's like
48:42a you know
48:43if one has
48:44I don't think
48:44you can do
48:45that
48:45I don't think
48:46yeah I don't
48:46think you can
48:46do that
48:47they bought
48:47a house
48:48in my
48:48Kansas City
48:48so like
48:49that was
48:49I'm not
48:50hearing that
48:51I hear
48:51the thing
48:51people always
48:52tell me
48:52in the music
48:53industry
48:53is they
48:53turn to me
48:54and they
48:54go
48:54you know
48:55if it
48:56was the
48:5690s
48:57you'd be
48:58able to
48:58afford a
48:58house
49:00with where
49:00you are
49:01now
49:01and I'm
49:02like
49:02yeah
49:02I can
49:03barely pay
49:04my apartment
49:04rent
49:05you know
49:06so we got
49:07a couple
49:07minutes left
49:07does anybody
49:08have any
49:08questions
49:08from the
49:09audience
49:09I cannot
49:10see
49:11so
49:13but if
49:14anybody
49:14wants to
49:15just sort
49:15of
49:16yeah okay
49:17right here
49:17boom
49:30there was
49:31some
49:31I remember
49:32towards that
49:33week we were
49:33going
49:34crazy and
49:34we tried
49:35I think
49:35like a
49:36cumbia
49:36techno track
49:37and I
49:38remember
49:39Kenny
49:39turned
49:39and he
49:40was like
49:40I think
49:41this is
49:41we found
49:42the line
49:43it does
49:44not work
49:45yeah
49:47anybody else
49:48there's a
49:48there's a
49:49microphone
49:49floating around
49:50so
49:51yes
49:53no chillers
49:54chillers
49:55no punishers
49:56all chillers
49:59let it breathe
50:00two more
50:01seconds
50:04right here
50:07I just want
50:08to hear more
50:08about New
50:09York and
50:09what it's
50:09like
50:11playing there
50:12I moved
50:12away a
50:13long time
50:13ago and
50:14how does it
50:15feel
50:16I mean I
50:17love New
50:18York
50:18I was born
50:19and raised
50:20there so
50:20I don't
50:21know I'm
50:22super attached
50:23and I
50:24think like
50:25for us like
50:26the shows
50:26are really
50:27fun because
50:28they feel like
50:28our hometown
50:29shows but
50:30yeah I mean
50:31I ride or
50:33die for
50:33New York
50:33man
50:34I think
50:35too you
50:36know the
50:36thing that
50:36was so
50:37you know
50:38awesome like
50:39in post
50:39pandemic
50:40New York
50:41especially
50:41which is
50:42like talked
50:44about a
50:44little bit
50:45obviously like
50:45the New York
50:46bands like
50:46you have
50:47The Dare
50:47you have
50:48Chanel Beads
50:49you know who
50:50are awesome
50:50Frost Children
50:51you have all
50:52these groups
50:52that kind of
50:53sprouted up
50:54in this
50:55post pandemic
50:56you know
50:57kind of thing
50:57but I think
50:58what doesn't
50:58get talked
50:59about enough
51:00in that
51:01time was
51:01it was such
51:03a local
51:04focus scene
51:05you know
51:06no one
51:07in that scene
51:08was thinking
51:09about I want
51:10to go play
51:10Europe
51:10or I want
51:11to go play
51:11whatever
51:12it was
51:12literally
51:13for the
51:13year
51:14coming right
51:14out of
51:15the pandemic
51:15it was like
51:16everyone kind
51:17of trying
51:18to one up
51:19each other
51:20that was in
51:21the scene
51:22and everyone
51:22was hanging
51:23at the same
51:24bars and
51:24everyone was
51:25paying attention
51:26I mean I
51:26remember
51:27the first
51:28time that I
51:29met Harrison
51:30the dare
51:31we were
51:32throwing
51:32I had a
51:34club night
51:35nearby
51:35he had his
51:36club night
51:36at home
51:36sweet home
51:37before girls
51:38came out
51:39he was the
51:39resident
51:40every Thursday
51:41no one would
51:42go you know
51:43before that
51:45song came out
51:45he'll tell you
51:46but he was
51:47still he was
51:48the Thursday
51:48night guy
51:49there and
51:49then I
51:50had a
51:50Monday night
51:52party
51:52which is
51:53you know
51:53not great
51:54at another
51:55club nearby
51:56but I
51:56remember
51:58you know
51:59girls came
51:59out
52:00and that
52:00obviously
52:01was
52:01you know
52:01if you were
52:02in New York
52:02that was
52:02a watershed
52:04moment
52:04that was one
52:04of those
52:05moments
52:05you know
52:06that it
52:06just
52:07truly
52:07like I
52:08remember
52:08the day
52:08it came
52:09out
52:09and it's
52:09just nothing
52:10felt the same
52:10it just felt
52:11everything about
52:12it felt
52:12different
52:13it had
52:14punctured
52:14through
52:15this kind
52:16of bubbling
52:16hole
52:17but I
52:17remember
52:19I had
52:20never met
52:20him
52:21and the
52:21next
52:22two days
52:23later
52:23he came
52:24to my
52:24club night
52:25and he
52:26came right
52:26up to me
52:27because we
52:27knew who
52:27each other
52:28were
52:29and he
52:30was like
52:30I finally
52:31made it out
52:32to one of
52:32these club
52:32nights
52:32and I
52:33remember
52:33when he
52:33walked in
52:34I put
52:34on
52:35because it
52:35was a
52:35vinyl
52:36kind of
52:37club night
52:37I was
52:37doing
52:37and I
52:38put on
52:38Mary
52:39Makey
52:39at my
52:39place
52:40Calvin
52:40Harris
52:41from the
52:41first album
52:42because I
52:43thought
52:43that's
52:44what he
52:44had been
52:44referencing
52:45with girls
52:46and then of
52:47course he
52:47made this
52:47claim that
52:48he had
52:48never
52:49heard it
52:50you know
52:51whatever
52:51I call
52:52bullshit
52:53I call
52:53total
52:54bullshit
52:54I was
52:54like
52:54you've
52:55heard
52:55you've
52:55heard
52:55this
52:56record
52:56but
52:56but even
52:58beyond
52:58that
52:59it was
52:59like
52:59it was
53:00really
53:00this
53:01just
53:01like
53:02local
53:02melting
53:03pot
53:04and I
53:04even
53:04remember
53:04it was
53:05like
53:05we
53:05would
53:06throw
53:06a
53:06show
53:06in
53:07an
53:08empty
53:08swimming
53:08pool
53:09but then
53:09Chanel
53:10Beads
53:10threw
53:11a show
53:11in
53:11an
53:12abandoned
53:13subway
53:13tunnel
53:14like
53:14you know
53:15a month
53:16later
53:16and all
53:17of these
53:18bands
53:18were
53:19playing
53:19a lot
53:20you know
53:20I mean
53:21Harrison
53:21had his
53:22party
53:22every week
53:23it was
53:23weekly
53:24for a year
53:25yeah
53:26and
53:27Chanel
53:28Beads
53:28was playing
53:29probably
53:29once a
53:30month
53:30you know
53:30in the
53:31city
53:31and no
53:32one was
53:32touring
53:33and no
53:33one
53:33had
53:34to be
53:35honest
53:35like
53:36really
53:36grander
53:37aspirations
53:37because
53:38I think
53:38for
53:39so many
53:40years
53:40in New
53:41York
53:41there
53:42had
53:42just
53:42like
53:43when
53:43I
53:43first
53:43moved
53:43there
53:44it
53:44was
53:44like
53:44there
53:44was
53:44just
53:45this
53:45sense
53:45that
53:45we
53:46had
53:46had
53:4615
53:47years
53:48of
53:48bands
53:49trying
53:49to be
53:49the
53:50strokes
53:50you know
53:51and
53:52nothing
53:53had
53:53really
53:53come
53:54to
53:54roost
53:54and
53:55labels
53:56didn't
53:56really
53:56care
53:57about
53:57what
53:57was
53:57going
53:58on
53:58in
53:58New
53:58York
53:59and
53:59all
53:59that
53:59stuff
54:00and
54:00then
54:00I
54:00think
54:00so
54:01the
54:02beautiful
54:02thing
54:02about
54:03the
54:03post
54:03pandemic
54:03is
54:04there
54:04was
54:04this
54:04like
54:05well
54:05who
54:05cares
54:05we're
54:06just
54:06doing
54:06this
54:06for
54:06us
54:07locally
54:07the
54:07labels
54:08don't
54:08care
54:08about
54:08what's
54:09going
54:09on
54:09here
54:09the
54:10you
54:10know
54:10whatever
54:11so
54:11well
54:12and
54:12what's
54:12great
54:12about
54:12that
54:13too
54:13is
54:13that
54:13I mean
54:13a lot
54:14of
54:14people
54:14forget
54:15about
54:15the
54:15strokes
54:15is
54:15that
54:15they
54:16also
54:16woodshitted
54:17for
54:17like
54:18oh
54:18they
54:18played
54:19so
54:19much
54:19they
54:20got
54:20just like
54:21the
54:21Beatles
54:21in Hamburg
54:22they got
54:22good
54:23as a band
54:23you know
54:24they
54:24played
54:25pianos
54:25they played
54:26candy
54:26shop
54:26they played
54:27all those
54:28Lower East Side
54:28places
54:29and then
54:29by the time
54:31New York City
54:31Cops
54:32and whatever
54:32that first
54:32record
54:33came out
54:33they're just
54:33like
54:33oh
54:33these
54:34guys
54:34can play
54:34they're a good
54:35band
54:35it's the same
54:36thing
54:36with all
54:37those bands
54:37you go see
54:39Chanel Beads
54:39play
54:40these guys
54:40can play
54:43and that's
54:44what's so
54:44great about
54:44it
54:44the idea
54:46of woodshedding
54:47the idea
54:47of just
54:48being like
54:48hey
54:49we're here
54:49we're working
54:50stuff out
54:50we're learning
54:51how to play
54:52together
54:52as a band
54:53we're learning
54:53what works
54:54we're learning
54:54what doesn't
54:55we're getting
54:55everything so
54:56comfortable
54:56that we can
54:57write better
54:58songs
54:58and it's
55:00like
55:00a lot of
55:02it is
55:03economics
55:04that can
55:04be hard
55:05to do
55:05a lot
55:05of it
55:06is just
55:06sort of
55:07rock clubs
55:07turn into
55:08DJ clubs
55:10everything
55:10in New York
55:11is changing
55:11it's all about
55:12money
55:12it's very
55:13difficult
55:13to do
55:13anything
55:14but if you
55:14have the
55:15opportunity
55:15to be able
55:16to play
55:17with your
55:17band
55:18at a local
55:18night
55:19over and
55:19over and
55:19over again
55:20you get
55:20better
55:21I think
55:21too
55:22the pandemic
55:23kind of
55:25reinvented
55:25Manhattan
55:26in a way
55:27to me
55:27because
55:28a lot
55:29of the
55:29finance
55:29guys
55:30and of course
55:31there's still
55:31a ton
55:31that live
55:32there
55:32but a lot
55:33of the
55:33finance
55:33guys
55:34once the
55:35pandemic
55:35hit
55:36that were
55:36living in
55:36downtown
55:37Manhattan
55:37they went
55:38well I have
55:39money
55:39why would I
55:40stay in
55:40this like
55:41lame apartment
55:42that I can't
55:43get out of
55:43now and I
55:44can't go
55:44party
55:45so I'm
55:45gonna go
55:46buy a
55:46house
55:47somewhere
55:48else
55:48and go
55:48move
55:49and that
55:50I think
55:51that window
55:52though has
55:52closed again
55:53unfortunately
55:53but for a
55:54period in
55:55the pandemic
55:57some younger
55:57kids and
55:58artists started
55:59to move
55:59back in
56:00to downtown
56:00you know
56:01which for a
56:02while
56:02downtown
56:03Manhattan
56:03kind of
56:04felt like
56:04oh why
56:04would you
56:05go out
56:05there
56:05it's in
56:06Brooklyn
56:06or whatever
56:07and it
56:08kind of
56:08did
56:08kind of
56:10reinvigorate
56:11the city
56:11in a great
56:12way
56:12and I
56:13think we
56:13got fortunate
56:14with the
56:14fact also
56:15that there
56:16was enough
56:16people to
56:17support the
56:17scene
56:18not just
56:18bands
56:19but there
56:19was like
56:20an appetite
56:20for
56:21you know
56:23kids going
56:24out
56:25and
56:26kind of
56:27like
56:27riding
56:27or dying
56:28for
56:29these
56:30New York
56:30bands
56:32people ask
56:33me
56:33where's the
56:35best place
56:36to see a
56:36show in
56:36New York
56:36and there
56:37used to
56:37be a lot
56:38of answers
56:38and now
56:38there's not
56:39a lot
56:39of answers
56:40there's two
56:41if you ever
56:42go
56:42there's TVI
56:43which I
56:43think is an
56:44incredible
56:44space
56:44and then
56:45Nightclub
56:45101
56:45which is
56:46the Billy
56:47Jones
56:47R.I.P
56:48like
56:49absolute
56:49New York
56:50legend
56:50did so
56:51much
56:51to bring
56:52that
56:53back
56:53to
56:53first
56:54show
56:54I
56:56worked
56:56at his
56:57record
56:57store
56:57when we
56:58started to
56:58tour
56:59more
56:59and I
56:59got
56:59you
56:59worked
56:59at
57:00Billy's
57:01record
57:01salon
57:01I
57:01probably
57:01saw you
57:02in there
57:02you were
57:03there
57:03with
57:03because he
57:04had his
57:05other
57:05friend
57:05in there
57:06Jake
57:06from
57:07Voyer
57:07great band
57:08and then
57:09I forget
57:10her name
57:11started working
57:11towards the end
57:12but no
57:12it was like
57:12when I got
57:13laid off
57:13from my
57:14bar job
57:14because
57:15we were touring
57:16too much
57:17but we were
57:18still making
57:18no money
57:18so I
57:19needed a
57:19job
57:20and I
57:21remember
57:21I went to

57:37yeah
57:38people
57:38like that
57:39that supported
57:40the scene
57:40that I think
57:41are so
57:42quintessential
57:43to New York
57:43in a way
57:44that do
57:45things
57:46because they're
57:46cool
57:47even if it's
57:47not gonna
57:47make money
57:48he turned
57:49to me
57:49in this
