Prince Andrew was given the honour in 2021
Transcript
00:02The City of London Corporation, the body which administers the ancient City Centre, is now
00:08drawing up plans to strip Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor of the freedom of the City of London.
00:14He still currently retains the Freedom of the City, an award he received in 2021 because
00:21his father, Prince Philip, had been a freeman.
00:24In May, the Corporation criticised Andrew for failing to surrender his freedom, despite
00:30being asked to do so.
00:33Now it has emerged that the Corporation is developing a process to remove Andrew's right to the
00:39freedom of the City of London, as it is said there is no current mechanism allowing it
00:45to do so.
00:46There has been some discussion that the Corporation could draft a bill which Parliament would have
00:52the pass, allowing it to strip Andrew of the honour.
00:57But the spokesperson suggested that the Corporation would rather move at a quicker pace, carrying
01:04out its own process to allow the move.
01:09The City Corporation's highest decision-making body said it lacks the power to remove Andrew's
01:16freedom as his freedom is not an honour or office but a property right protected under
01:22both domestic law and the European Convention on Human Rights.
