MASSIVE CHUNK OF PATAGONIAN GLACIER COLLAPSES INTO LAKE

WITH VID

By Divij Mayer

Check out this awe inspiring moment as a towering wall of ice crashes into the water below at one of the world's most famous glaciers.

Hannah Law, from Peterborough, England, captured the spectacular calving event at the Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, southern Argentina.

The video shows the towering blue glacier, standing around 75 metres above the water, as enormous sections of ice suddenly crack away from the glacier's face before crashing into the lake below, sending huge waves rippling across the water.

Glacier calving is a natural process where ice breaks away from the edge of a glacier, but while Perito Moreno was once known for advancing, the glacier is now in retreat.

One user commented: ‘Such an epic glacier! It’s so sad to see so many around the world shrinking.’

Another added: ‘The power of nature is incredible, but it is heartbreaking to think these moments are becoming more common for all the wrong reasons.’
