00:01This anticipated movie of the year is out in theaters now.
00:05I'm talking about The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's retelling of Homer's classic poem
00:10of a man's journey home from war.
00:12It has everything, action, romance, mythical beasts, and Greek gods.
00:16We sat down with two of the film's stars, Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon,
00:20to find out why the filming of the movie was also an incredible adventure.
00:27Christopher Nolan's take on The Odyssey.
00:30It's so large-scale that the epic visuals match the epic story.
00:36Battles against monsters, man, the gods,
00:43and of course, Homer's Trojan horse that you may remember from school.
00:47I read The Odyssey in high school. Did you guys also?
00:50Yeah, everybody.
00:51I actually didn't read it in high school.
00:53I read it right after because my dad just decided one summer that I'm going to read it.
00:58And I'm like, that seems like a good thing to do with your summer. I'm a nerd.

01:02Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the Greek hero who spends 20 years trying to get back to his loyal wife,
01:09Penelope,
01:10played by Anne Hathaway.
01:11I think his king is coming back.
01:13No, he's not.
01:14How did you get to your interpretation of Penelope?
01:16Because she's not passively waiting.
01:20Honestly, all credit to Chris.
01:22It was there in the writing.
01:25Penelope is a high-born girl.
01:27She's not struggled in her life the way a lot of people struggle.
01:31I look at it in terms of how it relates to me in the modern world,
01:35and I have privileges that I was born with.
01:37And yet, I know that in order for me to get where I want to go,
01:42there has to be a fight there.
01:43There has to be an edge.
01:44I may have to use my elbows and my teeth.
01:47Penelope cleverly defends her palace from angry suitors trying to take Odysseus' place.
01:52Bringing it all.
01:54Before Odysseus goes away, there's a scene where you guys are together,
01:57and you are so connected.
01:58You're so bonded.
02:00It's palpable.
02:00And I know it's acting, but how did you guys get there?
02:05Well, great script, great director, great scene,
02:09and I think relatable for both of us,
02:11because we're kind of both in that marriage, independent of one another.
02:14And so...
02:16In that true love marriage?
02:17Yeah, well, I don't want to be...
02:18That's how I feel about mine.
02:19I know, I don't want to be...
02:20Action!
02:22This is the third time the actors have worked with Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan.
02:26They were both in Interstellar.
02:28Damon was also in Oppenheimer,
02:30and Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises.
02:33Oh my gosh, during Dark Knight Rises,
02:35the greatest fear I had was making a mistake in front of Chris.
02:38Getting a line wrong, or just, you know, dropping a take.
02:42And this time, I didn't have that pressure.
02:44I knew that what we were doing was we were telling a story about human beings,
02:48and the best thing I could do was just trust him and be a human being,
02:51and sometimes not falling apart because it wasn't perfect,
02:56but actually trusting that it was falling apart for a reason.
02:59Bringing this story to life was an odyssey of its own with thousands of extras
03:05across six different countries from Italy to Iceland and some locations inaccessible by road.
03:12How intense did it get?
03:13Well, it was the hardest movie, definitely, that I've ever done.
03:17It felt in a lot of ways more like an expedition than a movie because of the locations we were
03:22at.
03:22You know, we'd be shooting on top of a mountain.
03:24We'd have to hike up the mountain to shoot.
03:26And that part of it ended up being really fun because it was challenging for everybody there.
03:31Another challenge, this is the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX cameras,
03:38which are so big that mirrors had to be used so actors could see each other around the bulky equipment.
03:46This is literally an ancient story. Why does it still need to be told today?
03:50Well, I'm not sure we've learned Zeus's law yet.
03:54You know, treat others as you would be treated.
03:57It's a very simple concept.
03:59But I think what the original story explores and what the film explores is what happens when we don't live
04:06by that code.
04:07Every subsequent generation that's encountered the story has found it to be relevant.
04:12And depending on where you are in your own life, I think you get different things out of it.
04:16So, if we bring this back to 2026 for a moment, and if you had a friend who was waiting
04:2120 years for her man to come back, what would you tell her?
04:25In the modern age?
04:27Gosh.
04:27That's like two weeks.
04:31I mean, okay, there's a lot of translating we have to do.
04:33Like, because I'd be like, because Odysseus can't text.
04:37Right, I was going to say.
04:38And he hasn't texted yet.
04:39I'm just going to say, if you don't get a text in 20 years, he's maybe not that into you.
04:44Maybe read the room.
04:45Yeah.
04:47But when you find the one, you wait.
04:49You wait.
04:50It was so incredible.
04:51I mean, I know you've seen the movie, right, Cable?
04:53Yes, yes.
04:53I've actually seen it twice.
04:54You've seen it twice?
04:55Oh, really?
04:56Yes.
04:56Lucky.
04:57Because I had to see it ahead of time to interview Chris Nolan and then get to the premiere.
05:01It's going to sweep everything.
05:03Everything.
05:04Have you ever seen so many A-listers in a single movie?
05:07Exactly.
05:08Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Tom Holland.
05:10But there was really a great moment in the interview.
05:12I didn't want to leave without asking Matt Damon about another prominent person that
05:16he went to college with who we interviewed.
05:19I'm asking him this question now.
05:20I'm not going to tell you right now.
