00:10Most people know the Batman movies, but not everyone is familiar with director Nicholas
00:15Winding Refn. Even if his name doesn't immediately ring a bell, there is a good chance you've
00:20seen some of his work. He's the filmmaker behind the cult favorite movie Drive, as well
00:25as visually striking films like Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon. Over the years, Refn has
00:32built a reputation for making stylish, artistic movies that often feel very different from
00:37traditional Hollywood blockbusters. That's one of the reasons why his recent comments
00:41about wanting to direct a Batgirl movie caught so much attention.
00:46Before getting into what Refn said, it's worth talking about Batgirl itself because the project
00:51has become one of the most talked about canceled movies in recent memory.
00:55Back in 2022, Warner Bros. made the shocking decision to shelve the completed Batgirl movie.
01:01The film had already finished shooting, and post-production was reportedly close to being
01:06done. Instead of releasing it in theaters or on streaming, the studio chose to cancel the
01:11project entirely and use it as a tax write-off. That decision stunned both fans and people working
01:18in the film industry because it's incredibly rare for a major superhero movie to be canceled
01:23after production is basically complete. The film starred Leslie Grace as Batgirl, alongside
01:29Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton, who was set to return as Batman. The movie was so far along
01:36in development, and many fans expected it to eventually find some kind of release, but that
01:41never happened. Over the years, there have been plenty of canceled movies in Hollywood, although
01:46very few have generated the same level of curiosity as Batgirl. Warner Bros. also shelved Coyote vs.
01:53Acme, another project that became the center of controversy. The difference is that Coyote vs.
01:59Acme was eventually sold and is finally getting a chance to reach audiences. Batgirl, however,
02:05appears destined to stay locked away forever. Part of the reason is that the entire DC franchise has
02:12changed dramatically since then. The DC universe has gone through a major reboot, with new leadership
02:18and a new long-term vision. Because of those changes, releasing the old Batgirl movie would
02:24probably create confusion within the current continuity. Even though that makes business sense
02:29from the studio's perspective, it hasn't stopped fans from wondering what the movie actually looked like.
02:35Over the last few years, bits and pieces of information have continued to surface online.
02:40Set photos, concept artwork, costume reveals, and behind-the-scenes stories have all helped fuel
02:46curiosity. Every time a new image appears, fans get another glimpse of the superhero film they never
02:52got to experience. That ongoing mystery has turned Batgirl into something of a legend among comic book movie
02:59fans. Interestingly, the movie recently received an unexpected tribute. Four years after its cancellation,
03:06the newly released Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight game arrived packed with references to Batman's
03:12long history across movies, television shows, comics, and video games. Among those many Easter eggs
03:18appears to be a notable nod to the cancelled Batgirl project. For long-time DC fans, that tribute is
03:25especially meaningful because it acknowledges a movie that never officially reached audiences.
03:30While it isn't the same as finally watching the film, it serves as a reminder that the project
03:35still has supporters and continues to occupy a unique place in Batman history.
03:40Now, this brings us to Nicholas Winding Refn and his surprising comments about the DC Universe.
03:46Throughout his career, Refn has reportedly turned down opportunities to direct major Hollywood
03:51productions. He has generally preferred creating original stories and maintaining complete artistic
03:57control over his projects. That's why hearing him express interest in directing a superhero movie
04:03came as such a surprise. Speaking about comic book adaptations, Refn revealed that if he were ever
04:10given the opportunity to make a DC film, Batgirl would be his first choice. It's an unexpected answer,
04:16because many directors immediately gravitate toward characters like Batman, Superman, or even Wonder
04:22Woman. Refn, however, seems fascinated by Batgirl specifically. He explained that Wonder Woman never
04:29really appealed to him as a directing opportunity because he viewed that character as carrying a certain
04:34weight and seriousness. Batgirl, on the other hand, sparked his imagination in a completely different
04:40way. Of course, there's one major problem with that dream. Batgirl is currently one of the most
04:46complicated properties in the DC catalog because of everything that happened with the cancelled film.
04:52The original movie was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilal Fala, and the cancellation was a
04:58heartbreaking moment for both filmmakers. After dedicating years of work to the project, seeing it shelved
05:04before release was incredibly disappointing. Reports at the time suggested that the movie's storyline
05:10might have conflicted with plans connected to The Flash, which arrived in 2023. Warner Bros. Discovery,
05:17under CEO David Zaslav, ultimately chose to write off the production, which reportedly cost more than 70
05:24million dollars. Even though the original movie was cancelled, Refn's comments show that there's still
05:30interest in the Batgirl character itself. In many ways, Batgirl remains one of DC's most underutilized
05:37heroes. Batman has received countless movies, television shows, and animated projects, but Barbara
05:43Gordon's story has rarely been given the spotlight on the big screen. What makes Refn's interest even more
05:49fascinating is the reason behind it. According to the director, he loves the costumes and the overall
05:55visual style associated with comic book characters. Anyone familiar with his filmography knows that
06:01visuals are incredibly important to him. His movies often focus on striking imagery, bold colors, and
06:08carefully crafted aesthetics. He explained that much of his recent creative work revolves around an obsession
06:15with objects, dolls, and the way people move through space. Because of that artistic perspective,
06:21superhero costumes and comic book imagery naturally appeal to him. They fit perfectly with the kind of
06:27visual storytelling he enjoys exploring. Refn also talked about his lifelong love for collectibles and
06:33pop culture. He mentioned collecting Japanese toys and even playing with Lego sets. Those interests help
06:40explain why comic books and superheroes continue to inspire him. For him, these characters aren't just
06:46blockbuster entertainment. They're part of a larger creative world that has influenced him for years.
06:52At the same time, fans probably shouldn't expect Refn to jump into a major franchise anytime soon.
06:58Despite expressing enthusiasm for Batgirl, he also admitted that he generally prefers creating original
07:04projects. That has been a consistent theme throughout his career. Unlike many filmmakers who eventually move into
07:11franchise filmmaking, Refn has usually chosen to follow his own artistic path. He's often been compared to
07:18directors who value personal expression over commercial expectations. Because of that mindset, there is
07:25always a chance that he never ends up directing an established intellectual property at all. Still, it's fun
07:31imagining what a Nicholas Refn superhero movie might look like. His films are known for their slow pacing,
07:37dreamlike atmosphere, neon visuals, and unconventional storytelling choices. Those qualities would create
07:44a very different comic book movie from what audiences usually see. The idea became even more amusing when
07:50actress Rose Havana Lu jokingly imagined what Refn's version of Spider-Man would look like. Her answer was
07:56simple but hilarious. It would feature the slowest swing. That joke perfectly captures how people view
08:03Refn's filmmaking style. A Batgirl movie directed by Refn would probably be unlike any superhero film ever
08:10made. It might focus less on massive action scenes and more on mood, atmosphere, character psychology,
08:17and visual symbolism. And that's that for today's video folks. Thank you so much for watching and we
