00:00is your reaction to gonzalez today uh i to be honest i i just heard bits and pieces of him
00:07um i i was uh busy with other things um well i mean he basically said well i'm just going
00:12to
00:12keep it in-house keep it between my team and the team and he didn't say anything so that's how
00:17he
00:17handled it but your thoughts on the whole story and where it stands uh i do think that the i
00:24think
00:24that both sides are in a good place from what i understand i do know that um you talk to
00:29anybody
00:30with the patriots they will tell you that they are going to make christian gonzalez the highest paid
00:36cornerback in the game even if that comes after devin witherspoon uh you know i did love robert
00:44coming out and saying what he said but i think we all know from being around him we understand why
00:49he did it because he just he wants the attention he wants to be the good guy it's it's all
00:54that
00:54stuff where uh it would probably be better they just said we love christian gonzalez and
00:59you know what have you um when when he came out and said that you know my reaction was okay
01:05that's fine
01:06but how you defined highest paid cornerback in the game highest paid patriots player ever it's it's all
01:14in the it's all in the eye of the beholder it's all the devil in the details and like they
01:19could be
01:19talking about the new money say even after year five like year six seven and eight where you know
01:27and that's really sort of like the patrick sertan like most cornerbacks their contracts uh they get
01:33a raise for year four which is this year for christian gonzalez like 15 to 20 million then it goes
01:39up a step in year five which is the fifth year option and then you get into the real big
01:44money the
01:45third you know 30 million dollars what have you um my question all along has been is christian
01:52gonzalez is he on board with that or does he want the derrick stingley jr contract which would mean
01:58no like i'm not waiting two or three years to get my big money i'm getting it now in the
02:04form of like
02:05a 50 million dollar signing bonus that's where i've always been like how are they going to make this
02:11work uh okay uh your thoughts on him participating while this is going on and he so again you weren't
02:20there there was one exchange with karen gareesian where maybe it's open interpretation whether he
02:25will in fact put the pads on uh or not jimmy i don't know if you know what um uh
02:31give me i think
02:32this is number 12 jimmy if that's not it uh there was a thing with karen gareesian where he said
02:38i'll be out there which wasn't exactly you know when the pads go on are you going to be a
02:43full
02:43participant he said i'll be out there
02:54yeah i mean this is these are my guys um it's it's hard to sit and just just watch um
03:00you know
03:01i i like to be out on the field it's what i love to do so um you know and
03:07it's at the end of the day
03:08i got to get better for myself and for the team so um got to do what i got to
03:13do and and grind and
03:14continue to push myself
03:22yeah i'll be out here i'll be out here
03:25i'll be out here okay so that's not you know he kind of left that open a little bit greg
03:29your
03:29thoughts yeah um you know hearing it you know he says like yeah i'll be out here it sounds like
03:37he's going to be out there uh i don't know why uh just a yes wouldn't do especially on the
03:43follow-up
03:43question but um yeah it's hard to parse his words okay greg bidar joining us from camp what do you
03:48got
03:48on acus in that situation so i talked to the executive of an afc team um earlier than i right
03:56before i came on i got another call and i got a i might be more confused but this is
04:00basically the
04:01gist of it uh when he got his uh combine medical check there was nothing wrong with him he was
04:09100
04:09healthy um he only did the 40 yard dash at the combine and the reason given given to teams was
04:17a sore hamstring uh he did as far as i could tell he did nothing at his pro day so
04:25the only
04:27testing numbers that they have or at least this team had on him was a 40 yard dash he has
04:33the shoulder
04:34injury surgery what have you that was disclosed to nfl teams on april 4th that is a labrum tear
04:41that i think he got taken care of i think that's um but as far as the knee no information
04:48no information
04:50provided to nfl teams the only the only update that this team had probably from reading uh you know
04:56reports was uh the knee injury became an issue in june so there's a lot of different ways this can
05:04go
05:04but i think i understand now why the team was so ticked off in that at the end of the
05:10day to to get
05:12any money akis had to give them a three-year injury waiver which to me in my 25 years covering
05:18the league
05:18i had never heard of this happening before you guys have a follow-up yeah greg do you uh do
05:25you think
05:25because it seemed vrabel seemed a little uncertain the other day when he he was asked about whether he's
05:30going to play this year what is meaning akis what is your feeling as to whether akis is going to
05:37play
05:37and when if he plays i don't i don't have any information on that i mean i i saw him
05:43i think
05:43it was the first day doing a little bit of work on the conditioning field i couldn't see his full
05:49workout or anything like that i do know vrabel said the other day that basically intimated that akis
05:55really wants to be out on the field um so that would lead me to believe that it's uh it's
06:04not a
06:04lost cause that i think he is going to be out there at some point whether that's training camp
06:09or maybe he starts the season on the pup list i'm not really sure i would i guess i would
06:16probably lean
06:17pup list at this point but um who knows greg through the first four days of camp and based on
06:23what i saw
06:23day one what you've seen in totality is it fair to say kashaun booty to this point has outperformed
06:29aj brown you always come up with these questions to pigeonhole me every year how's aj brown look
06:37uh he's been okay i thought today was better for him uh he caught a couple slants he had a
06:44really nice
06:44like little hitch where uh you know he stopped on a dime and totally lost the cornerback so that was
06:50nice but uh yeah i would say that kashaun booty through four practices has been the best wide
06:56receiver on the field now i would also say that uh some people would point out that uh he has
07:03been
07:03here he has been in this offense aj brown robio dobbs have not been in this offense so it's it's
07:09i would
07:09say natural to assume that it's going to take them uh some time to get fully up to speed on
07:15where
07:16kashaun booty is but uh to answer your question booty's been the best wide receiver through four
07:21practices beyond that who's looked good in that group who hasn't who's looked good uh
07:28booty i would say pop douglas has looked pretty good uh i've been uh i was surprised i guess i
07:35mean
07:35when i before training camp started i did more of a deep dive on their their big time their sort
07:41of
07:42five big time additions that you know you think are going to play a lot and dobbs was the number
07:47one guy who um worried me especially if they were going to put him in the slot i had questions
07:52about
07:52whether he was going to be able to do that for this team um he does it sometimes i would
07:58say that
07:58demario douglas has been uh getting the most slot snaps on the team this year and when dobbs and brown
08:05and pop douglas have been on the field at the same time um the dobbs and brown have been on
08:11the
08:11outside and demario douglas has been on the inside how has dobbs looked um okay i would say it's a
08:19i
08:20would say if if brown's off to a slow start off to even slower start he's a shaky based on
08:27what i've
08:27read shaky okay so both dobbs and brown are off to slow starts is that how they look greg or
08:33is it more
08:33about they don't know where to be in the offense you know what i'm saying um i think that part
08:41of
08:41it is um you know first of all the first like two practices so they've had three real quote-unquote
08:47real practices so far the first two they were doing all outside zone stuff boot action it because they
08:54weren't in any sort of pads and which rabel said he thought was pointless to you know really work on
08:59um you know their bread and butter if they couldn't really block anybody and so they weren't really
09:04running their offense the first two days uh today was probably the the most uh the closer to the
09:12regular patriots offense i think we'll see more of that on thursday when the pads go on um and i
09:18thought that you know brown was a lot better today i think he's a he's more of a fit for
09:23the regular
09:23conventional patriots offense than what they were running the first two days but uh i will say that
09:29uh brown and may had a had a rep today where they were not on the same page that aj
09:34was running a
09:35vertical route may just uh thought that he should bend it inside and that's the kind of stuff that aj
09:41and and may are going to have to be on the same page within this offense okay how about will
09:46campbell
09:46what'd you see from will campbell today so there there was a one-on-one period today even though they
09:51were just in shells i would say it was more like two-thirds speed um you know i would say
09:57the
09:57offensive line as a whole everybody did really well because i think the defensive line was holding back
10:01uh will campbell won both his reps he went against draymond jones who cut inside on him and uh campbell
10:09did a nice job writing him off his second rep was against braden swenson who tried to speed around
10:16the edge and what impressed me was will campbell was aggressive went out and got him uh and gave
10:24him a real you know forcible uh block you know got his hands on him it was it was really
10:30nice punch
10:32and that's something we didn't see a lot of from will campbell last year if you remember last year
10:37he got he's more of a last year he was more of a catcher in terms of a pass blocker
10:41he would invite
10:42guys in and then sort of like wrap them up yeah that works in the sec it doesn't work against
10:47the
10:47best pass rushers in the nfl they're too strong and they're too good and so to see will campbell do
10:53that today it indicated to me that that guy knows uh you know what he did wrong last year and
11:00exactly
11:00trying to correct that greg did you say early in camp he had a one-on-one where he ended
11:05up on the
11:05ground uh was that you who reported that i did um it wasn't quite a one-on-one it was
11:13a it was a
11:13zone blocking drill where the two guys were engaged and uh i think it was draymond jones who got him
11:19who draymond jones has proved to be very strong he's tossed a lot of guys on the field um you
11:25know
11:25it wasn't terrible or anything from will campbell wasn't a pass block it was a run blocking type of
11:30situation and uh draymond jones just uh got the edge on him big boy feels a little gun shy to
11:36me
11:36mouse a little bit like he's afraid of getting clipped he's not in pads yet i'm not afraid i'm
11:41not afraid of getting clipped but i'm also not going to hyperventilate we do this every year i'm
11:46not going to hyperventilate over uh helmets outside zone and shells like we'll talk when they've been in
11:54pads for a week and and be real and i know you're going to rant and rave about you're down
11:58there
11:58you're supposed to be keeping track you know why even have you down i we do this every year
12:03but i'm not going to hyperventilate over the first couple days of practice i like you better when you
12:08hyperventilate i mean we have a show to do today greg yeah yeah yeah and i gave you my opinion
12:13it's
12:14tempered because uh i've been through this before i and i i'm not going to overreact to the first couple
12:20days but so but aj brown and romeo and i'm serious aj brown and romeo dob slow starts yep but
12:26it's not
12:26like they're like are they not running well are they not moving well no they're doing you know
12:31they're doing fine aj brown looks as advertised i think he's just uh i think he's getting his feet
12:36wet and romeo dobbs is probably uh the player that they added that i have the most questions about that
12:44i'm like i i i don't know whether this is going to work or not okay now we're getting somewhere
12:49something yeah that's well i mean i i wrote that before camp even started so pay attention mass big
12:54boys or anything else that we should be hitting on anything else you got uh uh i don't think so
