Colonel Jan Dirk Breytenbach (14 July 1932 – 16 June 2024) was a highly decorated South African Special Forces military officer, widely regarded as the founding father of South Africa's modern elite units. Over an extensive nearly four-decade military career, he became famous for establishing and leading several of the South African Defence Force's (SADF) most formidable combat units. Following his retirement, he transitioned into a prominent military historian and author.
