Nearly 1,000 swimmers take on Long Island Sound for cancer research

Nearly 1,000 swimmers participated in the 34th annual Swim Across America Long Island Sound event on Saturday, raising $2,501,258 for cancer research. The event included 630 open-water swimmers and more than 300 participants in pool swims held across Westchester County in New York. Among the open-water swimmers, 14 completed a 10-kilometer crossing of Long Island Sound from Glen Cove, New York, to Larchmont, while the remaining 616 swimmers took part in 2-kilometer and 5-kilometer shoreline races between the Larchmont Yacht Club and Larchmont Shore Club. About 2,000 spectators gathered along the shore to cheer on participants. The proceeds will benefit Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine and Cancer Support Team. Swim Across America, a national nonprofit founded in 1987, funds cancer research through swimming events around the United States. The organization has raised more than $150 million nationwide. The Long Island Sound swim is one of the largest open-water charity swims in the United States.
