00:38In 1976, the French manicure was invented in Los Angeles by Jeff Pink, a Hollywood makeup artist who started his
00:46own nail polish line named after his wife, Orly.
00:49Today, Orly makes countless nail polish colors and finishes.
00:54It all starts with their in-house chemist.

00:59Using a variety of pigments, the chemist mixes the hue from scratch.
01:03A suspension base is added to distribute the pigments, giving the polish a uniform color.
01:10An adhesive polymer is mixed in to ensure the polish actually sticks to your nails and doesn't chip.

01:18Orly makes over five tons of nail polish every day.
01:22This drum of nail polish weighs over 200 pounds.
01:26It's hooked up to a filling machine.
01:34On the other side of the machine, the bottles await their filling.
01:38The glass used to make these bottles is imported from Italy.
01:43They're sent down a conveyor belt, a single file.
01:46First, the metal mixing balls are dropped into the bottles to help keep the product mixed.
01:54Then, the polish is pumped into the bottles.

02:01But what's a beautiful polish if you can't get it on your nails?
02:13These brushes are special.
02:15They have a 600 bristle count and are designed to fit every cuticle.

02:46Safety plastic is put on the bottle with a Sleever machine.
