Davido celebrates 15 years in music and breaks down the vision behind his upcoming album ‘ORIADÉ.’ He reflects on constantly creating, recording songs across two years and nearly 60 tour dates, and why this new era feels deeply personal. 00:40To be honest, there's never a time when I start working on music. I'm always working on music.
00:44Whether I'm planning to release or whether I'm not planning to release, I feel like it's just like, how will

00:52If you do sports. Yeah. Whether you're in season or not, you still got to have time to work out.
00:56Right. You know what I'm saying? To keep your body in shape and just to keep my skills in shape.
00:59So I kind of recorded this album, I'll say over on my tour, two years.

01:11Is it better on this one? Yeah. You know when you listen to music after, you'll be like,

01:17But you know sometimes, you sit on songs, you listen to it too much, you get tired of it.
01:22You know? So yeah, I'll say over the span of two years, over my last tour, the last tour, Five
01:29of Love Tour,
01:29we did almost 60 shows back to back. You know what I'm saying? That was a crazy experience.
01:34You know what I'm saying? So as soon as I came off tour, everybody expected me to go and rest.
01:38You don't try. Go and build your family. And I did that, but the whole time I was resting, I'd
01:44go to the studio.
01:45You know what I'm saying? Because the fire is still in me, so.
01:49Yeah. When and how did you land on this title, and what does Oriadei mean to you?
01:53You know, this is the first time I did the US, Europe, then we took it to Africa.
01:58And I haven't done an African tour, a proper African tour, since 27, 2018 or so.
02:06It's been a minute. Or 2019 or so. It's been a long time.
02:09So with this tour, we're like, and the reason being is that, you know, our production has gotten to such
02:15a level
02:15where it might be difficult to be able to, I don't want to do it, if I do a show
02:20in Madison Square Garden,
02:21I want to give my fans in Africa the same feeling.
02:24Yeah. The same level of production. You know what I'm saying? Et cetera.
02:28So I'll say that's why it took time. But we found a level playing ground, because we have to understand
02:31that
02:32everywhere is growing. You know what I'm saying? But we found a level playing ground.
02:37My production manager, amazing, found a way we could, even if we don't give 100%,
02:43at least 50, 60% of, you know, what we do overseas, if we can, you know, relay that in
02:50Africa.

02:55So me going back, doing my African tour made me realize that, yo, like, I miss this.

03:05The money is amazing. You know what I'm saying? And obviously, taking the culture worldwide.
03:10But I wanted to do a project where, you know, first of all, even from the title, to the theme,
03:14to the music,
03:17is predominantly African. You know what I'm saying? That's how I started.
03:21That's how people fell in love with me. You know, so that's really where, you know, I wanted to, you
03:26know,
03:28the direction of this record. My first album was a Yoruba name, which was Omobo Paolo.
03:32It means son of a rich man. After that, all my albums have been English.
03:37A good time, timeless, a better time. So I was like, nah, this time we have to take it.
03:42Bad Bunny, all his albums are in Spanish. You know what I'm saying?
03:45They're going number one in the U.S. You know what I'm saying?
03:47He just did a residency in Puerto Rico, like, for two months.
03:52And people were flying in. You know what I'm saying?
03:54Yeah, he broke records. He didn't even touch America.
03:56Exactly. So that's the kind of space I'm in right now. You know what I'm saying?
04:00Even though, yes, I'm half American, but, you know, the culture, you know, is what brought me to Limelight.
04:09So I'm like, no, we got to go back and pay homage and really, like, you know, release a project,

04:17You know, what are some of the major themes that you're exploring on this new album?
04:21Definitely the fashion.

04:23I was like, yo, we got to take it back, you know, fashion-wise of the theme, you know, Yoruba,
04:30Uriadi.
04:31So Uriadi, you know, the head that wears the crown, you know what I'm saying?
04:42It has to do with, you know, I'm in my King era, the crown era.
04:46So, yeah, if you look at the album cover, you see the traditional beads.
04:51Obviously, I'm holding the crown.
04:52You see the, you know, the traditional attire I'm wearing, you know what I'm saying?
04:57So it's very cultural.

05:01And then, obviously, the name is Yoruba.

05:04That's my tribe.
05:05You know, there are three major tribes in Nigeria.

05:13So I'm Yoruba.
05:14I just wanted to take it, you know, take it back home.
05:17But don't get me wrong, on the album as well, you're still going to hear some international

06:57And when I was recording this album, I was like, yo, we've got to get a Jazz record.

09:50It's crazy because, you know, a lot of people know that, you know, I spent half of my life

11:42because you were one of the most instrumental artists in the crossover of Afrobeats to America.
11:47But how have you seen the Afrobeats industry evolve over the past 15 years?
11:51Man, it's crazy.
11:53Like, I remember, so I just did the World Cup Fan Fest in Atlanta.
12:02And I think the after party had to go somewhere.
12:05So one of the promoters that booked me, I was like, like, he came, and I was like,
12:10yeah, you remember when he used to let us in the club?
12:13Hey.
12:14It was just like, stuff like that.
12:16Like, now it was just like, the culture is just, you go to a club, out of 10 songs,
12:21like, you're hearing African music.
12:22Yeah.
12:24And I remember, like, the first time when I landed in New York, you know,
12:28I signed my deal in 2015.
12:32And I told them, they were like, they were putting me in the studios with, like, reggaeton,
12:38producers, EDM.
12:39I'm like, yo, it's not going to work.
12:41It's not going to work.
12:42You guys have to let me do what I know how to do.
12:45Why did you guys come to me?
12:47Because you've been listening to what I've been doing.

14:02Because a lot of times we would do New York and then we would go do DC.
14:07So I'm like, we never used to like to drive because of the thing.
