00:00sec media days are going on i think media days around college football very underrated
00:05time of the year on the calendar yeah because as we know college coaches and college basketball
00:10coaches have been the one that in the past couple years have really popped up on the
00:14pain and pendergast radar as well these are some very petty egotistical people these coaches let
00:19it go man yeah nfl coaches are annoyingly boring yeah automatic on every little thing they're very
00:26rare that they take a shot now that rex ryan is gone especially not a lot of shots taken no
00:31uh but
00:31college they just let they go for it he's scared yeah all right but there's big doings yesterday
00:37sec media day seth do we want kiffin basically acting like it's 1967 yeah yeah yeah but the
00:45conferences you know the college football playoff has really started to create the potential for a
00:51riff yeah between conferences here yeah to where certain conferences think the playoff should look
00:57this way certain conferences think the playoff should look that way they all get disgruntled about
01:03every single one of them thinks one more team from their conference should have been invited
01:07right made the playoffs yeah and in the end here's the thing business is good even without how they
01:13may feel the playoff is flawed or we think we disagree with what the big 10 thinks the playoff
01:18should look like fans are scooping it up man fans are lapping it up right now yeah even if they
01:24hate
01:24it even if they hate all the discombobulation and the joining of conferences and everything
01:28they're still watching and yes at least on the aggregate they are yeah for sure so do we want to
01:33set the mood for this story right here yeah this is uh let's let's play a little kelly clarkson break
01:38away oh yeah because the sec's uh hinting that they might be open to breaking away
01:44starting their own deal sec commissioner greg sankey reiterated that's a good tune man reiterated
01:52monday the talk of the conference breaking away is quote real and not a leverage play the idea of an
02:00sec breakaway has been simmering within the conference talking about it then became a talking
02:06point at the spring meetings back in may um sankey didn't directly address the possibility during his
02:13opening comments on monday yesterday at the start of sec media days but the first question out of the
02:18shoot when the q a part started was about break about breaking away and he did not downplay yeah
02:28that it's a possibility and they've discussed it it sounds like there might be a few schools or
02:34presidents or whomever that are more into it than others are yeah i'm just this is the kind of thing
02:39where i don't know anymore what i i have a really hard time predicting that anything in college
02:48football is going to be a disaster because every single time i think that or the consensus is that
02:53it's going to be a disaster it actually ends up increasing the popularity of this sport yes nil
02:59transfer portal uh combining of conferences the all of these things that just it hasn't hurt the
03:05product you know what you could argue that it's hurt the product in virtue of like the actual play
03:10on the field and having every coach has to basically create a new team every single year
03:14yeah yeah um but in terms of the popularity of the sport it hasn't really dealt it any kind of
03:19a death
03:19blow it's been the opposite no no i i to me of all the things that have happened and i
03:25i'm of mind that
03:25this this is the thing that could potentially really damage the sport yeah i don't think anything's
03:31gonna kill it dead but really damage it i'll explain why in a second the big the biggest thing i
03:35thought
03:36of all the things that have come up in the last say 15 to 20 years the one for me
03:40that does still
03:42affect my enjoyment this just destroyed all the rivalries that used to exist yeah teams not playing
03:49rivals they used to play either because a they're not in the same conference anymore b they're in
03:55different conferences but one of them's not willing to play that whole texas texas a&m dynamic for years
03:59till they both got back in the same conference and see now with the playoff teams are very
04:06with the 12 team playoff teams are nervous about over scheduling maybe yeah they feel like hey maybe
04:11we'd be better off i mean that was the that was the battle cry for i forget which team it
04:15was last
04:16year oh it's texas like if we just didn't play ohio state and we played sam yeah and i think
04:22they
04:22played sam but if they played steven f austin in week one instead of ohio state we'd have been 10
04:26and
04:26two and in the playoff yeah that's bad for the sport it hasn't killed the sport the reason why
04:32i think and again the talk of the sec is talking about breaking away and basically conducting their
04:36own season unto themselves it would be there would be no competing for the national championship it
04:41would be the sec championship which i go ahead so we'll just so so that's where i'm kind of going
04:46with this yeah is that if they break off all together what what is the care level of the average
04:52fan
04:53for an s aside from those schools for an sec championship that they're treating like it's
04:58the national championship especially when the sec has come back to the pack a little bit here these
05:02last the nil and the transfer portal have brought the sec back to the pack a little bit they haven't
05:08won a national championship as a conference in a few years now that's the irony in the whole thing
05:12you're creating your own national championship and the big tens won the last few of these things
05:16a little bit soft imo ohio state michigan indiana these are the team right so so i think if you
05:23you have the sec creating their own championship and almost declaring it a national championship of
05:28some sort then you've got the rest of the schools where the average fan is going to go well the
05:32sec
05:33is not part of this that's not a real championship i think as opposed to having one real champion
05:38having two kind of fugazi champions i think i'm gonna say it i think that would damage the sport i
05:45think
05:45that i don't know if it would because what you you know what happens immediately is for one the sec
05:50would start expanding uh to the point where it almost just becomes it it that's probably the next
05:57step it starts expanding and then you're gonna end up with the same debates and arguments about
06:03like well wait a second how many teams need to be in the sec championship playoffs uh and at some
06:09point hey you know what you know what we should do 20 years from now hey you guys ever think
06:13what if we had the champion of the sec play the champion of the big 10 which now comprises 40
06:19teams yeah and you end up with a national championship that way i don't know if it's
06:23ever going to end or stop i don't know what i don't know what that i don't know if there's
06:27ever going
06:27to be a point of stability anymore where it feels like oh okay college college football is what it is
06:33and this is the way it works okay so i'll stand by this then i think as constructed the way
06:38you and i
06:38just described it and the way it would look initially i think that damages the sport which
06:43then forces everybody to come back to the table or the sec to do what you're talking about just all
06:48right if this is going to be a national champion uh if we if our entity that we've created is
06:53going
06:53to be a championship that's viewed by college football fans as a real national champion then we
06:59we can't just be 16 teams in the southwest southeast of the united states we've got to be more of
07:06a
07:06national league and that's what gets everybody back to the table this might be the detour on the
07:11way to the 64 team super conference that everybody talks about being inevitable right
07:18how much of this just boils down to flat out that they that if the ncaa because the ncaa has
07:25become
07:25antiquated in so many ways and it's and i like it's easy to bag on the ncaa but man they're
07:30trying to
07:31they're trying to you know wrangle a tornado here and operating as this gigantic organization that
07:39had a certain set of rules forever and now all of a sudden it's been blown out of the water
07:42well
07:43and they might just not be capable of of containing and managing all of this where smaller organizations
07:50might feel that they are they've shown they're not capable right right you know they've shown that
07:54they tried to create that clearinghouse for all the nil stuff and that's been kind of a mess
07:59yeah um i yeah it's i think there's if you go back to like let's say baseball when baseball was
08:04america's pastime and i know you can never go back and do everything in the exact same way i mean
08:07it
08:07would like it used to be that you had two separate leagues and they were separate and met in the
08:14world
08:15series right they met in the world series and kids there wasn't even a playoffs back in the day
08:19it was the only time the only time that you would you you'd have the best team from the al
08:26the best
08:26team from the nl and the then they would meet in the world series and that was it no playoffs
08:30anything
08:31else like that um like i'm not saying that that's that was the best way to do it or anything
08:35but baseball was very popular then so i don't know i don't know if there's a if if all of
08:41a sudden it
08:41went back to like the conference the the the big ten is its own conference they only play within each
08:48other i don't i think it would be very short-lived i think at some point then they get you
08:53get right
08:53back into okay you know what oh let's have the we got two or three super conferences let's have
08:59those teams play each other at the end of the year right and then you know what happens yeah you
09:02know
09:02what four teams really isn't enough i think what have we got i so i you just have this you
09:07end up
09:07with a different governing body body than the ncaa the whole thing's like an amoeba it just like
09:11keeps like changing shapes yeah geographically functionally and everything else the difference
09:15would be that it would be whoever was the governing body would maybe be more adept at handling
09:21everything and because i would imagine at some point i i would i'm about to say the nil and
09:28everything will settle down i don't boy if teams are splitting off it's going to be different in
09:32each conference and at some point they're like for it to settle down there'd have to be some kind
09:37of a salary cap and i i just don't know how you put all of this back into the i
09:41was one of those
09:41traditional college football fans that for years was just in denial about things like unionization of
09:46the players yeah 60 14 super league things like that i've flipped i know i think it's going to be
09:53a while do i see it in my lifetime yeah probably you know depending on you know if i keep
09:57walking
09:58four miles a day and whatever i but i feel like this like i feel strongly that student athletes as
10:05employees at least football players and maybe basketball players as employees of the school is coming
10:10and i feel like if this if the sec especially were to break off that to me isn't permanent where
10:16it's the sec over here and everybody else that's the first salvo of kind of trimming the fat off of
10:22the 130 teams for those 60 or 70 schools that get trimmed off into some separate tier between d1 and
10:31d1a double a you know um but this is where the money is leading there's like an fcs and a
10:37mid fcs
10:38yeah the fcs tears of the fcs and then people care about those championships and things like
10:43that i don't know i i i don't like all i i like the way it was but i but
10:47i'm not dumb enough to
10:48what well what's the likelihood that this actually happens the sec breaking off yeah anytime or any
10:53of the other conferences breaking off uh not zero but i think it's it's the underdog yeah i think it's
10:58the underdog i think there's i mean i think ultimately they all look and say okay we got to work
11:01together i don't know how like i don't know the finances of it or anything but the fact that all
11:05of
11:05these teams in the big 10 have to travel so far for all the other sports as well it's like
11:11there's
11:11gotta there's gotta be people there that are saying like look we can make this work but we
11:15could make it work a lot better if we didn't have to take if our cross-country team didn't have
11:19to
11:19fly across the country five times that's exactly right
