Polish artists fill Bulgarian village walls with murals

"You can paint whatever you want and nobody will say, 'No, this is not good,'” says art student Kamil Hrapovitsky as he paints a mural on the wall of a rural house in the small Bulgarian village of Staro Zhelezare. For the past 11 years, Polish artists have transformed the village into an open-air gallery, creating hundreds of murals that immortalise local residents alongside world leaders, celebrities and cultural icons. The initiative was launched by Bulgarian artist Ventsislav Piryankov and his wife Katarzyna, both lecturers at the University of the Arts in Poznań, Poland. While the murals often reflect current events and political developments, this year the artists chose a different direction, focusing on positive emotions and a single unifying theme: love.
