Pauline Hanson wasn't there but the One Nation Leader loomed large over Labor's national conference in Adelaide with the Prime Minister and senior ministers lining up to attack the ascendant party. Anthony Albanese opened the three-day forum acknowledging voter concerns about the economy and promising to remain focused on the cost of living.

00:15Surrounded by true believers, Anthony Albanese acknowledged times are tough
00:19and pitched Labor as the party to ease voters' pain.
00:23The status quo is not set in stone. The problems can be solved.
00:29Pledging more cost of living relief through an expansion of the paid prac scheme,
00:34giving more students access to a $340 a week payment while undertaking placements.
00:40And in a win for unions, a new Fair Work Court to be created
00:44to resolve smaller industrial disputes more quickly and cheaply.
00:49Good for workers, good for business, good for the country.
00:53On the conference floor, delegates debated amendments to the party's 125-page platform,
01:00committing Labor to extending compulsory super to under-18s regardless of their hours worked,
01:05and removing disincentives to decarbonisation, opening the door to cut diesel fuel rebates for miners.
01:13Labor can and Labor will double down on decarbonisation.
01:18But a union-led push for an explicit commitment to a gas tax failed.
01:23The reality is though, the clock is ticking.
01:26Most debates have been settled well before delegates voted on the floor,
01:30in part to present Labor as a united party in contrast with its opponents.
01:35One Nation is looming large over this gathering,
01:38with warnings against complacency as the conservative side of politics splinters.
01:43If you can't govern your dog, you can't govern the country.
