We go over more ESPN lay offs as they continue in bulk. While Stephen A. Smith reveals he was upset that ESPN let go of Ryan Clark, Pat McAfee gets defensive for fans saying his upcoming new deal is to blame.

00:00Big story yesterday in sports outside of actual sports
00:04was ESPN's layoffs, some of the big names that were let go.
00:09We knew about Ryan Clark.
00:11Bart Scott was let go.
00:14Charles Davis, a friend of the show,
00:15and, of course, a very, very similar voice to Ron Pitts
00:19who speed-shamed Leroy Horde.
00:21Tom Pellicero was let go, NFL Network reporter.
00:26Andreas Hall, who covers boxing.
00:30And Cam Newton, no longer going to be on first take.
00:33Cam Newton did not have a bitter ending.
00:38He was cool about it.
00:39He was like, yeah, it was a great experience being on first take.
00:42I was a little surprised.
00:43I was like, how much was Cam Newton making that?
00:45Was he regular on first take?
00:46Was he like he was doing all last year?
00:48I don't know that he's a regular.
00:50No, he didn't replace Shannon Sharp.
00:54I thought that he replaced Shannon Sharp
00:55when they got rid of Shannon Sharp.
00:57Shemitah says, don't worry, punting is coming out with an album.
01:00Yeah, McAfee was all sensitive about it yesterday
01:02because people were like, he's getting ready to sign
01:04apparently a massive deal that's going to pay him like 60 mil a year.
01:07And so people are like, how come McAfee is getting all this money
01:12and I can't have Carl Ravage?
01:13Look, I see both sides of this, to be honest with you.
01:17I'm not the biggest Pat McAfee fan in the world.
01:19However, I will say this as much as punting can be annoying
01:24because, uh, you know, especially when he was, you know,
01:27fawning over Aaron Rodgers, when Aaron Rodgers was just
01:29spinning nonsense on his show, his show is a juggernaut.
01:34And basically what it is, is it's just like everybody likes
01:36going on that show because they're going to get nothing
01:39of a hardball interview.
01:41You basically get to go on, hang out with the boys.
01:43It's on airports and bars.
01:45It's eye candy.
01:46There's a reason why it's, it's as big as it is.
01:49It's because it's like, it's just a hang.
01:52And I will say for McAfee to give him credit.
01:54Now I, I cannot tell you a time I've ever watched all of McAfee
01:58because it's on at the same time as us.
02:00Uh, I usually only will see social media clips,
02:02but every sport goes on that.
02:04He will put every sport on his show.
02:06So there is a, there is some credit to, to be, to be said for that.
02:09There's no wonder why ESPN wants to do more of that.
02:13It's easy.
02:14He does all the production, all that money goes to his staff.
02:17Um, I, I kind of get why ESPN is going full into McAfee.
02:22He does every sport.
02:24Is he my favorite personality in the world?
02:25No, I think there's some points where he's, he's a little over the
02:29top annoying.
02:29That's kind of how he got the gig.
02:31But do I get why a network is like, Oh, we're getting behind this.
02:35This is a monster for us.
02:37And it's easy.
02:38We don't really have to do the work.
02:39We're just paying for it.
02:40Of course.
02:41So I, uh, I get that.
02:44I don't want to see call ravaged leave.
02:45That's my, that's like my childhood.
02:46I love baseball tonight.
02:47Call ravages.
02:49Uh, you know, I gotta be honest with you.
02:51I didn't even know it was still at ESPN because baseball tonight's not
02:53really a thing anymore.
02:54It's not a property, but it does bum you out.
02:57It does.
02:58It does.
02:58It does.
02:59But yeah, any clip I see of AJ Hawk, he still somehow talks less.
03:03Uh, he still somehow talks less than Leroy did during the Clayton
03:06McCullough interview.
03:07Yeah.
03:08He does nothing.
03:09He does nothing.
03:10But, uh, so we're going to stop with Leroy.
03:15He's like under anesthesia right now.
03:18Leroy did throw me an anchor in that.
03:19He really was just like, Oh, I have no question.
03:24Um, I know people were also very mad about the way Ryan Clark got
03:28fired.
03:29Uh, he got let go in the middle of NFL and NFL live.
03:33And I don't understand why there was this need to like rush to do that.
03:36Cause I always think it's funny.
03:37And I, and this is going to happen to me one day, eventually, eventually, this is
03:41how it ends for all broadcasters.
03:43It does.
03:43Brittany, I'm getting you ready for when you're a star and they, and they, and
03:46they eventually, when they lay me off and they give you the chair, this is how
03:49they'll do it to you.
03:50Eventually like 15 years down the road, eventually when you get it, it's just like
03:53you're pulled into an office and they just say, Hey, let you go.
03:56You know, we're, and they, and they escort you out.
03:58Cause they all think this is, they all think we're all going to go crazy.
04:02Everybody, everybody thinks somewhere along the way, some broadcaster must've
04:05just gone.
04:06Absolutely bananas.
04:07I actually do think this happened recently with like a weather lady now that it
04:10comes to mind, but they all think we're going to go absolutely insane.
04:13And we can't just be mature and say goodbye to our audience as if we don't want to
04:17ruin our next professional.
04:19So if Ryan Clark did find out, unfortunately that he was going to like, Oh, you
04:24couldn't have let him finish NFL live.
04:26Like he was going to hop in the middle of his Buffalo bills, take and say FESPN.
04:31Like, I don't understand why corporations feel the need to do that.
04:35But I also think it's wrong to not let somebody do like a proper send off and
04:39kind of like say their goodbyes and like close that chapter.
04:42Yes.
04:42I don't understand that.
04:43And maybe I'm projecting.
04:45Cause I would love, I would love one day if, if I was told today, Hey Tobes, nice
04:49knowing you, dude, we're out of here.
04:50All right.
04:51Uh, I'm like, Oh, can I do a final show?
04:54Absolutely not.
04:54No kick rocks.
04:55At the end of the day, social media exists.
04:59You'll have your time to speak your truth.
05:02It does.
05:03But you know, I understand what you're saying there waiting out for it to, I understand
05:07what you're saying there, but I also think that there is a romanticism to you.
05:12People tune into your show, not necessarily social media all the time.
05:15No, I agree with that.
05:16But I'm saying like, what are they trying to avoid when you can do the same thing on
05:20your social media?
05:22Everybody's afraid of getting sued.
05:23Jennifer, everybody's afraid of getting sued.
05:25Everybody's afraid of, uh, and it, to me, it's almost like protecting the perfect game.
05:30You know, it's like, you're, you're, you're looking out for a disaster when disaster could
05:35strike anyway, like leaking a introductory press conference and, or you will hold out
05:41Max Meyer for a start and he still gets his neck hurt.
05:43Like you can't put, you know, you, you think it's going to go all ideal and it probably
05:47won't.
05:50So I don't understand why they had to pull them off the show.
05:53Um, as far as like, cause it's like, oh, well you need, we need to tell them before
05:58media does.
06:00Look, I can't really explain the only jobs I've ever lost has basically been, and I've
06:07been blessed, have been getting ghosted like for other gigs, you know, like I'm either
06:11doing something for another network and they just stop calling you.
06:14That's usually how I get laid off or just told, we don't want you to work for us anymore.
06:19I've never had the sit down again.
06:21It will happen one day likely, but, um, would it matter to me?
06:27I can't really say, would it matter to me if Glenn fired me or if Barry Jackson told me
06:31I was getting fired?
06:32I don't know.
06:33I think, I think the news is the news.
06:35I don't know if it's going to hit me differently either way.
06:38I think when ultimately like you think, I think this is how I feel.
06:43I can't say how it feel, but I think finding out that I'm just losing my job, whether it's
06:49from Barry Jackson or from Glenn, same seas to me.
06:53I don't think so.
06:54I think so.
06:55I think you're saying that.
06:56I don't know.
06:56I think he, I think he would start yelling.
06:59I don't think so.
07:00I don't think I would.
07:00He wouldn't yell.
07:01I don't think I would yell.
07:02I couldn't yell at Glenn cause you know, I'd feel like I'd, I'd make him tear up and
07:06then luckily, you know, he's not going to, I mean, unless I think he was, unless that's
07:09your retirement present.
07:10I don't know.
07:10Exactly.
07:11Unless that's, he's not going to be the one to do it, which is actually going to be different.
07:14It'll probably be some unknown suit or new suit.
07:16It probably would pain him more to do it than he would definitely.
07:19Maybe that's why he's leaving.
07:20Yeah.
07:21Maybe that's why.
07:21No, maybe that's why.
07:23Why are you like putting this into like the universe?
07:27What's going on?
07:28She says, we all know it's going to end up as a Slater scoop.
07:30Yeah.
07:31Nobody cares.
07:31Like, I don't, I personally wouldn't care if I found it.
07:34If Barry Jackson leaked the news to me and he found out from somebody that I was, I was
07:38getting let go.
07:39If he reached out to me, I'd be like, Oh, I can't believe honestly, didn't let me know
07:42first.
07:43I found out from Barry.
07:44It's like, I'm going to be miserable anyway.
07:46I lost my dream job.
07:48You know, like it's, I don't think that there's, I don't understand.
07:51So I guess what I'm saying is I don't understand the, the media's need to rush anymore.
07:55The world moves faster.
07:57I know that nobody wants to find out that they get traded or fired or laid off, but we got
08:02to realize we don't live in the old world anymore.
08:04This is not, Oh, we can protect everything very clearly.
08:07We can't keep any secrets.
08:08The heat just leaked that we're getting LeBron James.
08:09So I'm just telling you, I think I don't, I don't know.
08:14I can't say how it'd feel.
08:15Cause I've never been technically laid off.
08:17I've only been ignored to told, stop going back to gigs, but I kind of feel like whether
08:21it was Barry Jackson or somebody else telling me, or it was Glenn or whatever suit it'll
08:26be at that time, I don't think I would care.
08:29I think I would just take the news and move on.
08:31Now I would, of course we all, they're never going to let you do it.
08:35Of course we'd all love to leave on our terms and get to do something.
08:38Cause I've been somewhere, you know, 17 years, even though technically it's been other radio
08:43stations, I've been under the hub of the umbrella, whatever the mergers have been.
08:47So, you know, I get it.
08:50You guys think that you want to protect from the craziness.
08:52You should have let him finish his gig.
08:53It was stupid, like the idea that Ryan Clark was going to go crazy talking about, I don't
08:59know, whatever the best rookies are for the Minnesota Vikings on NFL live is asinine.
09:04Of course he could have done a professional job.
09:05So I think we got to be silly.
09:07We got to stop being silly with this and, uh, you know, just let people finish out their
09:12jobs normally.
09:13And however they find out they're getting fired, trust me, they're going to be pissed either
09:16way.
09:17But I, but I think we are all mostly grown adults.
09:20And for the most part, we can all say that, you know, we could do a professional job because
09:26look, at the end of the day, whenever I do get laid off, if you guys did want, I'm just
09:30saying, whenever I did get laid off, um, you could just go over there on that side of the
09:36board and just be like, boom, turn me off.
09:37Like, it's not that it's not that there's buttons for that.
09:39That's true.
09:40There are buttons straight to commercial.
09:42So anyway, so this is, uh, this is what it is.
