00:01Counselors are needed to tackle bullying and misconduct at school.
00:05But in many schools, there are not enough of them, says National Union of the Teaching Profession.
00:11To make matters worse, the few available are also often pulled away to sit in for teachers in the classroom.
00:18The union says that while teachers can spot warning signs, they are not trained to assess mental health crises or
00:25violent behaviour.
00:27As its Secretary-General Aminuddin Awang points out, more counselors, better training and clear crisis response are essential in every
00:37school.
00:39A counsellor, Jay Anusuya Jagathevi, says schools must act on warning signs instead of waiting for tragedy to happen.
00:47She says bullying includes verbal abuse, cyberbullying and social exclusion, not just physical attacks.
00:54Parents, schools, healthcare professionals and police must work together to protect students.
01:01The message is clear, early intervention can prevent small problems from becoming devastating incidents.
