00:00i think we're missing a trick here and i think the bbc has always been at its best when it's
00:03been a first mover that has helped to unlock things that others then then step into and i
00:09think this is one area where we could do far more so with that in mind do you think that

00:14headquarters of the bbc should remain in london i've long thought it should shift north i think
00:21it would be one of those moments where the bbc showed itself to be the first mover um a bit

00:28the work that was done at media city uh all those years ago that really has been a catalyst for
00:33a
00:33completely different broadcasting ecosystem opportunities opening up for people across the
00:38country a different mindset and way of thinking more internal challenge within the bbc um you know
00:45i think back to the glory days of of itv and when granada television in the northwest which you know
00:51well i know um was uh in its ascendancy and it really it was the place that and local newspapers
00:59were the place where working class kids from towns like wigan and berry could get their entry point into
01:04the television industry and go on to become some of the best in the world now i think the bbc
01:10still
01:10does a lot of that but i think for most young people growing up in towns like mine
01:16those opportunities just don't exist anymore and i think we should be ashamed as a nation
01:20about that and this charter is one of the ways that we can set that right will this be something
01:25that you push for so i'm keen to see i would be very keen to see the center of gravity
01:29and the bbc
01:30move to media city and i can't really see any compelling reason why not the bbc famously and
01:36historically has based itself a broadcasting house in central london miss nandy said the move would help
01:42open up opportunities in the north in the same way that other relocations have boosted media city in
01:49salford the new prime minister andy burnham is famously keen to devolve further power out of
01:56london with a particular drive to move certain government roles up north one of the things that
02:02i'm very keen that we do through this charter process is to remove the political appointments from
02:06the board i think that's damaged the public perception of the bbc and actually having met
02:12bectu and nuj reps i can tell you very compellingly that it's damaged staff confidence in their own
02:20leadership um we envisage a stronger role for the nations and regions not a weaker role the problem
02:27that i have with the current system is the political appointments um not the fact that the nations and
02:33regions are represented um i think it is right that the government continues to appoint the chair
02:38because i think there has to be some level of accountability through government back to
02:43parliament it's not lost on me that in the many crises that the bbc has had in recent years it's
02:48been
02:49me who has been called into parliament in order to account and i think it's therefore very important
02:54that there continues to be some link
