00:27And my grandmother always said, the good Lord gave us a clear head so we wouldn't go calling for help
00:33over every little thing.
00:35So let me show you what that little bottle of hydrogen peroxide can really do.
00:40Let's start with those little gnats in your house plants.
00:43If you keep plants indoors like I do, you've definitely seen them.
00:47Tiny black flies hovering around your potted plants like they're paying the rent.
00:52Those are fungus gnats, and they're a real pain.
00:54They breed down in the damp soil, and here's something that'll catch you off guard.
00:59A single female can lay as many as 200 eggs in one week.

01:05That's how a small annoyance becomes a full-blown infestation almost before you notice it started.
01:11Most people's first thought is to run out and buy some pricey spray, or worse, call somebody.
01:17But here's what I do, and it's cheap as can be.
01:19I mix one part of the regular 3% peroxide from the pharmacy with four parts plain water.
01:26Then I let the top inch or two of the soil dry out first, and I water the plant good
01:31and thorough with that mixture.
01:33You'll see the soil start to fizz and bubble up, and don't let that worry you one bit.
01:38That's exactly what you want.
01:39The fizzing means the peroxide is doing its thing, breaking down into water and oxygen.
01:45And along the way, it's killing off the larvae and eggs hiding down in there.
01:49And here's the part I love.
01:51That extra oxygen actually does the plant's roots a lot of good.
01:55So you're getting rid of the pests and giving your plant a little boost at the same time.
02:00Waste not, want not, like we say.
02:02One or two treatments about a week apart is usually all it takes to break the cycle and send those
02:08gnats packing.
02:09That same little bottle also beats bleach when it comes to mold and mildew.
02:13And this one surprised even me at first, because most people grab the bleach the second they spot mold in
02:19the bathroom.
02:20But here's the thing I've come to understand.
02:23Peroxide actually does a better job than bleach on the porous surfaces, the ones that soak stuff up.
02:28Let me explain why.
02:30Bleach does just fine on smooth, hard surfaces like tile and glass, where nothing can sink in.
02:36But on the soft, porous materials like wood, drywall, and grout, bleach can't get down deep enough.
02:43It kills the mold you can see on top, but leaves the roots alive underneath, so the mold just comes
02:49right back.
02:51Peroxide, with its fizzing, bubbling nature, works its way down into those tiny pores and reaches the mold bleach can't
02:58touch.
02:58And it doesn't fill your home with harsh fumes or leave chemical residue behind either.
03:03To use it, pour the 3% peroxide straight into a spray bottle, no watering down.
03:10Spray it right onto the moldy spot until it's good and soaked.
03:13Let it sit 10 or 15 minutes, and you'll watch it bubble away as it works.
03:17Then scrub the area with a brush or rag and wipe it clean.
03:21For the stubborn spots, a little baking soda sprinkled on gives you more scrubbing power.
03:26This works great on bathroom tile, shower walls, window sills, even clothing.
03:32Just keep in mind peroxide has a mild bleaching effect, so if you're cleaning anything colored or any dark wood,
03:39test it on a small hidden spot first.
03:41Better safe than sorry.
03:43And I want to be serious for a second, because mold is no small thing.
03:47It isn't just ugly.
03:49It can bring on allergies, asthma trouble, and other breathing problems.
03:53The folks who study this say somewhere between 10 and 50% of homes have a real mold problem.
04:00Often tucked away where nobody thinks to look.
04:03Under the sink, behind the appliances, inside the air ducts.
04:08So getting rid of it properly really matters.
04:11But pay attention here.
04:13The recommendation from the experts is to call a professional if you're facing a mold patch bigger than about 10
04:20square feet,
04:21which is roughly a 3 foot by 3 foot square.
04:25And one warning I won't let you skip.
04:28Never mix peroxide with vinegar.
04:30When you put those two together, they make something called parasitic acid, which gives off harsh fumes and can hurt
04:39your skin and eyes.
04:40Use them separately.
04:42Never together.
04:43I mean that.
04:45Now, ants.
04:46We've all had this morning.
04:48You walk into the kitchen and there's a whole line of ants marching across the counter like they bought the
04:53place and you're just visiting.
04:55Your first instinct might be to grab a can of chemical spray.
04:59But those products often have ingredients in them that I, for one, do not want anywhere near where I'm fixing
05:06food for my family.
05:08Peroxide kills ants right on contact.
05:11That oxidizing action damages their hard little shells and breaks down everything holding them together.
05:18And they just can't survive it.
05:20To make your own ant spray with the common 3% peroxide, mix about one part peroxide to two parts
05:28water.
05:29Spray it right onto any ants you see and along the trails they're following too.
05:34And here's something clever about it.
05:37Ants leave behind scent trails, little invisible paths, to tell their buddies where to march.
05:42The peroxide breaks down those scent trails, which throws the other ants into confusion and keeps them from following along.
05:51I'll be honest with you though.
05:53This works on the ants you can see and spray directly.
05:56It won't wipe out the whole colony the way a bait trap will.
06:00But for ants on your counter or in your bathroom, when you'd rather not reach for harsh chemicals, it's a
06:06great first line of defense.
06:07The same trick works on those little moth-like flies you might have noticed hanging around your kitchen or bathroom
06:14sink.
06:15Those are drain flies, sometimes called sewer gnats.
06:18They breed down in the gunk that builds up inside your drains.
06:22All that slimy mess of grease, hair, soap scum, and bits of food that collects over time.
06:29Most people don't even know they've got them until the population just explodes, and by then they're reaching for the
06:36phone to call somebody.
06:38But all you really need is a bottle of peroxide in about two minutes.
06:42Pour roughly a cup of the 3% peroxide straight down the problem drain.
06:47You'll hear it fizzing as it hits all that buildup.
06:50That fizzing does two jobs at once.
06:53It breaks down the slimy layer where the drain flies lay their eggs, and it kills the larvae and eggs
06:59on contact.
07:00Let it sit at least an hour, and overnight is even better.
07:04Then flush it through with hot water.
07:06Do this once a day for about a week to make sure you've broken the breeding cycle all the way
07:11through.
07:12And here's a bit of wisdom my mother taught me about staying ahead of trouble.
07:16Even if you've got no drain flies right now, pouring a little peroxide down your drains once a week keeps
07:23that buildup from ever forming.
07:25No buildup means no breeding ground, and no breeding ground means no drain flies.
07:31Simple as that.
07:32It clears out funky smells, too, since that same sludge is what causes the odor.
07:37Two good things from one little effort.
07:40When the weather warms up and you want to sit outside, peroxide can even help keep the mosquitoes off you.
07:47There are few things that ruin a nice evening faster than a swarm of mosquitoes treating you like their supper.
07:54There's no shortage of store-bought repellents and citronella candles out there, but a lot of them are loaded with
08:00chemicals or just plain don't work very well.
08:02Here's a cheaper way that a lot of people swear by.
08:05Fill a spray bottle with equal parts 3% peroxide and water.
08:10Spray it generously around your porch, your deck, wherever you plan to sit a while.
08:16Mosquitoes are put off by peroxide, and if they come into direct contact with the spray, the oxidizing action can
08:23kill them outright.
08:24There's even a study from a scientific journal that confirmed peroxide has an effect against mosquitoes and their eggs.
08:31Now, the catch is that peroxide breaks down pretty quick once it's out in the light, so the effect doesn't
08:37last forever.
08:38You'll need to spray again before each gathering or after it rains.
08:42But at about a dollar a bottle, that's a trade most people are happy to make.
08:47You can also go after any standing water in your yard.
08:50The bird baths, the plant saucers, the puddles.
08:54Mosquitoes need standing water to breed, and even a bottle cap's worth is enough for them.
08:58A splash of peroxide in that standing water kills the larvae before they ever grow up to bug you.
09:05If you're really serious about it, make it part of your routine.
09:08Spray your sitting area about a half hour before you head out.
09:12Hit the chairs, the table legs, the railing, and the shady spots where they like to rest in the heat.
09:18It's no miracle, I won't pretend otherwise, but plenty of people find it cuts the mosquitoes down noticeably at their
09:24evening get-togethers.
09:25Out in the garden, that same bottle takes care of aphids and other pests.
09:30And this one's close to my heart, because we put a lot of care into our gardens.
09:34If you grow vegetables, herbs, or flowers, you know the frustration of finding your plants covered in aphids, spider mites,
09:42or white flies.
09:43These tiny sap suckers weaken your plants, spread disease, and can ruin a whole garden if you let them be.
09:50Commercial pesticides work, sure, but they can also harm the good insects like the bees and ladybugs, and they leave
09:57chemical residue on the very food you're trying to grow.
10:00That's no way to do it, to my mind.
10:02Peroxide gives you a gentler path.
10:04Mix one teaspoon of the 3% peroxide into one gallon of water.
10:09Pour it into a spray bottle and spray it right onto the troubled plants, and be sure to coat both
10:14the tops and the undersides of the leaves, because that's where the pests like to hide.
10:19The peroxide works as a contact insecticide, and it's especially good against the soft-bodied pests like aphids, spider mites,
10:27white flies, and mealybugs, since they don't have that thick, waxy shell that protects the tougher insects.
10:33For the pests living down in the soil, like root aphids, use that same one-part to four-parts mix
10:40I told you about for the fungus gnats.
10:42Pour it right into the soil to get the eggs and larvae hiding below.
10:46And here's a bonus.
10:48Peroxide also helps fight the fungal troubles on plants, things like powdery mildew and sooty mold.
10:53So the same spray that handles the aphids can treat the fungus they leave behind.
10:58Two birds with one stone.
11:00Just test a single leaf first and wait a day or two before you spray the whole plant, especially the
11:06delicate kinds.
11:07And always spray in the early morning or late evening, never in the heat of the day, so you don't
11:12burn the leaves with the combination of peroxide and bright sun.
11:16Peroxide also comes in handy for something a lot less pleasant, which is cleaning up after mice or rats.
11:22Finding signs that rodents have made themselves at home is unsettling, I'll grant you.
11:27But here's what a lot of people don't realize.
11:29The real danger isn't always the rodents themselves.
11:32It's what they leave behind.
11:34Their droppings, their urine, and their nesting materials can carry serious diseases.
11:39I won't list them all out, but they're nothing to take lightly.
11:43So listen carefully here.
11:44The health authorities warn against sweeping or vacuuming up rodent droppings, because that can send contaminated particles up into the
11:52air where you might breathe them in.
11:54Instead, the right way is to disinfect the area first.
11:58And peroxide is one of the best disinfectants you can use for the job, since it kills bacteria, viruses, and
12:05fungi on contact.
12:06Here's how to do it safely.
12:08First, put on rubber gloves and a mask.
12:11Then, spray the droppings and the area all around them thoroughly with 3% peroxide.
12:17Let it soak at least 5 minutes.
12:20Then, carefully wipe everything up with paper towels and put those straight into a sealed plastic bag.
12:27Spray the area one more time and let it air dry.
12:31Now, this is one of those times where paying a professional to actually get rid of the rodents might be
12:37money well spent.
12:39But the cleanup?
12:40That you can handle yourself, just as thoroughly as any crew, with a spray bottle and some peroxide.
12:47If you keep house plants, there's another pest peroxide can rescue you from.
12:52And it's one most people have never heard of until their favorite plant starts looking sick and they can't figure
12:59out why.
13:00They're called thrips.
13:02Tiny, slender insects, barely visible to the naked eye, but they do real damage.
13:08They feed by puncturing the plant cells and drinking out the insides, leaving behind silvery streaks, twisted leaves, and little
13:17black specks.
13:18And they multiply fast, spreading from plant to plant in no time.
13:23Professional treatment for thrips can cost a fair bit, and a lot of store-bought products need applying over and
13:30over for weeks.
13:31But peroxide gives you a simple, affordable answer.
13:35Mix equal parts 3% peroxide and water in a spray bottle.
13:40Spray it generously onto the soil of the affected plant, making sure the top inch is soaked good.
13:47That goes after the eggs and larvae hiding down there.
13:51Repeat once a week until every sign of thrips is gone.
13:56For the grown thrips on the leaves, give the plant a good rinse with a hose or under the shower
14:01to physically knock them off.
14:03Then follow with a light misting of the peroxide solution on the leaves.
14:08The key with thrips is to be consistent.
14:11They've got a quick life cycle, so you have to keep treating the soil weekly to catch each new generation
14:17before they grow up and lay more eggs.
14:20Stick with it, and the peroxide will get the job done without exposing you, your family, or your animals to
14:27harsh chemicals.
14:28And then there's fleas, which might be the worst of the bunch, because discovering fleas in your home is the
14:35kind of trouble that makes your skin crawl, nearly literally.
14:39These tiny parasites bite.
14:41They multiply at an alarming rate, and they're terribly hard to get rid of once they've settled into your carpets,
14:48your bedding, and your furniture.
14:50Professional flea treatments can run into the hundreds of dollars, and they often involve spraying chemicals all through your home
14:57that you then have to live with.
15:00But peroxide can play a real part in your flea fighting plan, especially for treating the home itself.
15:06It works on fleas by damaging their protective shell, which dries them out and kills them.
15:12And it destroys the flea eggs, too, which is crucial, because getting rid of the grown fleas without killing the
15:18eggs just means a whole new generation hatches,
15:21and you're right back where you started.
15:23To use it, add peroxide to your laundry when you wash bedding, blankets, pet beds, and any fabric that might
15:31be harboring fleas or eggs.
15:33You can also spray a diluted solution of equal parts 3% peroxide and water onto carpets, upholstered furniture, and
15:42around the baseboards.
15:43But here's one warning I will not let you overlook. Never, ever put peroxide directly on your dog or cat.
15:51It'll irritate their skin, and it is not safe for animals.
15:55Stick to treating your home, and talk to your veterinarian about the right flea treatments for your pets.
16:01Here's a solid plan of attack. Vacuum every carpet, rug, and cushioned surface in your home thoroughly.
16:08That physically removes a big number of the fleas, larvae, and eggs all at once.
16:14Then empty the vacuum right away into a sealed bag and throw it out.
16:19Wash all your bedding and pet beds in the hottest water the fabric can take, and add some peroxide to
16:25the wash.
16:26Spray your carpets, furniture, and baseboards with the diluted solution, and let it all dry completely.
16:32Then repeat the whole process every few days, for at least 2 or 3 weeks, to catch the fleas as
16:38they keep hatching.
16:40Done alongside these steps, peroxide can help you tackle fleas without spending a fortune.
16:46So that's the long and short of it. One ordinary bottle of hydrogen peroxide,
16:52handling pest troubles that might otherwise cost you a good deal of hard-earned money.
16:57Let me leave you with a few words of caution, though, because I wouldn't feel right sending you off without
17:02them.
17:03Always use the 3% peroxide for your household needs.
17:06That's the standard kind sold at the pharmacy and the grocery store.
17:10The stronger concentrations can be dangerous, and should only be handled with proper care.
17:16Keep peroxide away from your eyes and mouth.
17:19Wear gloves if your skin is sensitive, and store it in a cool, dark place, since it breaks down when
17:25light gets at it.
17:25And remember this, peroxide is wonderful for the small and middling pest problems, and for staying ahead of them.
17:33But if you're facing a severe infestation, real damage to the structure of your home,
17:38or anything involving truly dangerous pests, that's when it's time, and just plain good sense,
17:44to bring in a licensed professional.
17:47There's no shame in knowing when a job is bigger than your two hands.
