01:40does nothing, for you cannot spray a nest you cannot find, and killing the foragers only
01:45sends the queen to make more. So this soap spray is the finest thing for the first job. The instant
01:51knockdown of the ones you see, and honestly no good at all for the second, the ending of
01:56the colony, which wants a carried home bait. Know which job you are doing. That is the whole

02:31place. Now, to the ants. My grandmother had a saying that fits this exactly, that you use
02:37the right tool for the job before you, and do not mistake a broom for a plow. She meant
02:42that every task has its own right tool, and half of doing a thing well is knowing which tool
02:48the job in front of you calls for, and not reaching for the one that suits a different
02:52job entirely. And ants are the very picture of it, for the knockdown wants one tool, and
02:58the ending of the colony another, and the woman who knows which is which wins where the one
03:03who sprays it everything loses. So here is her kind of right tool wisdom, the soap spray
03:09for the knockdown, and its honest place. So, the spray. And it is two plain things in water.
03:15Take about a pint of plain tap water at room temperature. Into it goes, first, a good squirt
03:21of plain dish soap, about three tablespoons, the plain neutral kind, or a plain coconut oil
03:27dish soap. And second, three tablespoons of vinegar, the plain white vinegar or apple cider,
03:33either does. Now here is a key step folks skip. You must shake or stir it very well, a good
03:39minute or two, until it turns milky and white and full of little bubbles, for that good mixing
03:44is what makes it work. A well blended soapy solution. Then pour it into a spray bottle,
03:49and it is ready. Two spoonfuls, water, and a good shaking. That simple. Now, how it kills,
03:56for the wonder of it tells you why it works and why it is safe. When you spray that soapy
04:01solution directly onto an ant, coating it, the soap breaks down the waxy coat that covers its
04:08body and keeps it from drying out. And it clogs up the tiny holes along its body through which
04:15it breathes. For an insect breathes not through a mouth, but through little holes in its shell.
04:20So the soapy coating smothers it. It cannot breathe. And it dies quickly, in seconds, right
04:27where you sprayed it. So it is not a poison that must be eaten. It is a physical smothering
04:34of the bug you hit, which is why it works on the instant and why it is safe to use

04:40a poison would frighten you. The soap smothers the ant it touches. That is the whole mechanism.
04:47And here is the honest first rule of using it, which comes straight from how it works.
04:53It only kills what you spray directly. This is a contact killer. So you must hit the ant
05:00with it. It does not linger and poison ants that come later. And it does not travel to
05:05the nest. So you spray it right onto the ants you see, coating them well, and they drop. Wet
05:13the trail, wet the ones on the counter, wet the cluster of them, and they die where you
05:18sprayed. But an ant that was not sprayed is not touched. Hit them directly. That is how
05:25a contact spray is used. Now the vinegar in it does a second clever thing worth knowing,
05:32and it is a real help. Ants find their way by a scent trail. The foragers lay down an invisible
05:39scent path from the nest to your food and back, and the others follow that trail like a road.
05:46So when you spray your soap and vinegar solution along their trail and their entry points, the
05:52vinegar wipes out that scent trail, erases the road, so the ants that come after cannot
05:59find the way and are thrown into confusion. So beyond killing the ones you hit, wiping down
06:06their trails and their entry points with this spray erases the scent road they follow, which
06:12helps break up the marching line. Kill the ones you see and wipe their trail to erase the road.
06:19That is the two-fold use in the kitchen. Now the honest word about what this will and will
06:26not do, for this is the heart of using it wisely, and I will not let you be fooled as
06:32the quick
06:32videos would fool you. This spray is a wonderful, safe, instant knockdown for the ants you see
06:39this minute, and for wiping their trails, and for that it is grand and I use it myself. But hear

06:46plainly, it does not end an ant infestation, because it never touches the hidden nest and
06:52the queen. You can spray the foragers dead all day, and the queen in the wall keeps laying
06:58more, and tomorrow there are just as many. So if you have a real established colony, the
07:05soap spray alone will have you spraying forever. To truly end the colony, you must reach the nest,
07:12and for that you want the sweet borax bait I showed you before, the sugar and borax the
07:18ants carry home to kill the queen, and the whole nest from the inside, together with starving
07:24them out and sealing the cracks they enter by. So use this soap spray for the instant knockdown
07:30of the ones you see now, and the carried home bait and the starving and sealing to end the colony
07:36for good. The two together win. The spray alone only knocks down.
07:42Now this same soap spray works on other soft-bodied bugs you spray directly, not just ants. It will
07:49drop the crickets and, if you hit them square, the roaches and other soft-bodied crawlers by
07:55the same smothering. But mind the same honest limit for all of them. It kills the ones you directly hit,
08:02not the hidden many. So the real cure for a roach colony is still the carried home bait I showed
08:08you.
08:09And I will be playing about one thing the quick videos over-claim. This does not deal with termites.
08:16Termites are a hidden pest that eats into the very structure of your house, deep in the wood and walls
08:22where no spray reaches. And a real termite trouble is a serious thing that wants a professional
08:28to look at and treat, not a soap spray on the surface. So use the spray honestly for the soft
08:34-bodied bugs
08:35you can directly hit. And know that termites and any deep infestation are beyond it.
08:41And here is the caution for using it in the garden. For many will want to, and it wants care.
08:47This soap spray will kill the soft-bodied bugs you spray on your plants, the aphids and the like.
08:53And that is useful. But two honest cautions. First, it does not know good bug from bad. It will kill
09:01the helpful bugs it hits as well as the pests. So spray only where you see the pests, not the
09:07whole garden.
09:09And second, soap can burn and harm tender plant leaves, especially a strong mix in the hot sun.
09:15So for the garden, use the weaker mix. Two spoonfuls of soap instead of three. Spray in the cool of
09:23the early morning
09:24or the evening and never in the hot midday sun. And do not drench your delicate plants. Test a leaf
09:31or two first
09:32and wait a day if you are unsure. Weaker mix, cool of day, only on the pests. That is the
09:39garden care.
09:40And the plain safety, though it is a safe thing. Rinse your food surfaces with clean water after you spray
09:47them,
09:48before food goes back on. For though it is only soap and vinegar, you do not want it on your
09:54food.
09:54And keep, as ever, the vinegar far from any bleach, for the two make a poison gas. Those small cares,
10:02and it is as safe a bug killer as you could ask for, which is its great virtue.
10:08Now think a moment about why we came to buy a costly can of poison spray to kill the ants
10:15on our counter.
10:16A poison we would rather not have near our food and our children, when two spoonfuls of dish soap
10:22and vinegar and water drop them just as dead, on the instant, for pennies and no poison at all.
10:29It is worse than a plot, for no one had to arrange it. There is a good trade in the
10:35poison bug sprays,
10:37and none at all in teaching folk that plain soap smothers the bug it touches, and plain vinegar erases the
10:44ants' trail,
10:45safe to use right where the food is. So the plain old knowing of killing a bug with soap and
10:52confusing it with vinegar
10:53just stopped being handed down, because no one profits by your killing your ants with what is already under your

11:08And somewhere between her day and ours, we were taught to buy the poison can, for a job a bit
