00:01We are Isaac and Souk. We're from Portland because we talked about last night. We're at 105.1 The Fan
00:07up there. Yeah, thank you
00:10Thank you
00:11So will the impetus for this show what to create this what what was it? Where did it come from?
00:17Guys, I'm gonna hand that over to you
00:24I already know my answer. I want to see what you I'm dealing with another issue. I'm gonna hand that
00:32over to you
00:34My car got towed last night. I'm still trying to find it
00:38No, I'm it's a great question
00:42I I just wanted to do something that was you know a return to kind of a big fun
00:48Ensemble comedy
00:50I've always been
00:52Infatuated with golf in in the sense that it is a miserable game
01:00It is a miserable existence even you talk to the pros. They're like, I'm never happy
01:06And I just thought oh that could be a fascinating the world to have a character kind of you know
01:11To see what goes on in one of those guys brains, and then it just grew from there
01:16What as fortune because you guys have worked together a couple times from you know anchor man and old school?
01:21So I feel like that there's probably a familiarity there fortune when you come into something like that
01:27What was the process of kind of blending in or to just feel natural when you kind of get dumped
01:31into what I assume is a
01:32A fairly free-flowing
01:34Fortune stalked me
01:36I
01:37Well, I had luckily gotten to meet will a couple years prior
01:42Doing his movie you're cordially invited. I just had a small part, but we got to do a scene together
01:47that got cut
01:48It was that good
01:51It was great
01:53All the crew loved it. The crew loved it. Oh my god. We saw shoulders shaking a lot of this
01:57Yeah, um, but we I could tell right away
02:00We had very similar vibes like oh, like feel like we kind of approach life and comedy very similarly
02:06And so by the end of the week, I said to will I was like are we friends yet? And
02:09he's like
02:10She's like are you friends? So can I have your number? I'm like no
02:15But then she wore me down and then I wore him down and so then I did another small part
02:19in his movie judgment day
02:21That's coming out. Um, and then we just we always like we're excited to see each other or so it
02:27seemed
02:27And then once we I got this job
02:32Opportunity I was like over the moon because I love him, but I knew I knew that you know
02:37We knew that
02:39Sam the the caddy care was gonna be
02:41I was gonna have to spend a lot of time on the golf course with whoever's playing sam and it's
02:45gotta be someone
02:46Who makes me laugh? It better not be a dud
02:49And I just knew fortune was was that person and she's she's
02:54amazing as is luke
02:56That's right
02:58Your name is luke, right? Hi there
03:00Will hey, is that you? I'm right here
03:04Uh, sean morass wfan in new york
03:07That's it. Okay, thank you
03:09Uh, you mentioned comedy ensembles will and sports comedy ensembles have been massive hits for you talladega nights course kicking
03:16and screaming
03:16uh, semi-pro
03:18Lonnie hawkins is there more jackie moon or is there more ricky bobby?
03:24Oh
03:25Well, uh
03:26I would say I guess there's more ricky bobby
03:29in in lonnie
03:31Um, but I would say that lonnie's the most uh, the biggest narcissist i've ever played
03:38And uh, lonnie
03:39And that's saying a lot
03:40That's saying a lot
03:41And I finally got to be who I am will ferrell in my personal life
03:47Uh, look i'm the guy if if you see me in an elevator and the doors are closing
03:54I don't push the button. I push the button to close. Yeah, for sure
03:57And so that's lonnie and start singing
04:01And waving at the person. Uh, so yeah, that that was I really wanted to play someone who was
04:08uh, really
04:10Narcissistic, but also at the same time. I mean I wear a visor that says hawk
04:14Yeah, so i'm always i'm living in mortal fear that you're not going to know who I am
04:19Uh, so so i'm always seeking everyone's approval at the same time someone was asking yesterday if
04:25Lonnie and ron burgundy would get along and I was saying oh these guys would be unbelievable friends
04:31And then and then jimmy said no these guys would hate each other
04:34But maybe that's how they'd meet by hating each other not like that guy
04:38And then suddenly they get drawn together by a speed boat together
04:44Timeshare
04:44Timeshare
04:46Hey guys, i'm bennett from the new 96.5 in philadelphia. Uh nice to meet you
04:50Oh, you know philly philly fans. Oh, yeah, yeah, we're very passionate. Yeah, exactly. Yeah
04:58Congrats on the hawk guys. We loved it. It was so much fun
05:01I want to talk more about lonnie and you know you talk to him you say he's narcissistic
05:06But there's also like that sweet tender underbelly
05:09No, I didn't think you know
05:10And you root for him even though he's you know in his own world and oblivious to everything else
05:15How did you craft this layered complex character?
05:20It just it just kind of happened, you know
05:22In the writers room as we kind of figured out who who lonnie was going to be
05:26um
05:28And you know, I think it became very compelling
05:32To all things were pointing towards
05:35Kind of a lost soul
05:37Yeah, kind of
05:39Finds, you know
05:40Sam who knows nothing about golf, but but
05:44Becomes really, you know, lonnie's horse whisperer knows exactly the right thing to say
05:48Uh, which which you hear a lot in golf that that
05:51you know, those
05:53The right caddy is is just as much psychologist as they are, you know strategist
05:59Um, and and that as the arc kind of kept going it really was going to be about a father
06:05and a son
06:07Battling it out, but also, uh
06:10It was gonna be more interesting if they did
06:12Kind of strive to find common ground
06:14So that's where this that's where the sweetness kind of comes in at the end and
06:18I remember david dobkin who directs
06:21The beginning of the show and the end when I finally when I saw the final episode
06:26I was like David
06:29Why am I crying at my computer here? I didn't want to do that
06:34This is supposed to be just fun and but we somehow I think we kind of strike a balance between
06:39between both
06:40Yeah, I was getting misty at the end. Yeah, I did not expect that to happen
06:43And it's a great line
06:44Uh, we were talking about it. It's yeah, I thought it stole the
06:48Luke's line is like god. I just love what what are
06:51Yeah, I I can't remember. I think it was a little blue. It was a little blue
06:54I think there might have been a blue in there, but it's about you know, I love the blanking game
07:00Right, and it's the there, you know, only one person can win
07:06And everything is on the line and there's
07:10There's so much pain and suffering in this game
07:13And yet that's what makes it
07:15Fascinating to watch
07:16All right, kevin klein the world famous k-rock in los angeles california world famous let's go ahead
07:21uh la and pass still la and pasadena la pasadena orange county you got
07:25um nothing good in the history of society has ever happened in the parking lot of a walmart until
07:31Until this show came around not as dangerous as a waffle house
07:35I would agree
07:35I would agree
07:36So I think you guys are going to do amazing things for changing society
07:39But in your personal lives have you have any of you had a good experience ever at a walmart?
07:43Oh, oh man. Oh, yeah, every time I go on location i'm just like, okay, I need a fan need
07:49an air purifier
07:50Yeah skillet. I bought a couple of good hot dogs. Yeah
07:54parking lot of a walmart
07:57I met my wife in a walmart
07:58You sure did
08:01Famously
08:01Famously
08:04Bumped into her
08:04It was like, what's up, man?
08:07Watch out for falling prices
08:09You were in a rental car, so you just bumped in
08:11Oh, I think my heart is falling for you
08:13That's right
08:14Yeah, that's how it happened
08:15That was it, that was the line
08:16But in a in a world where headlines are dominated by the lebron jameses of the world the lino messes
08:22of the world etc all the big athletes
08:23Uh, why is now the perfect time for the world to be introduced to the great hawk?
08:29Uh, oh god
08:31That's a big one
08:32That's a big one
08:33You just got compared with messy
08:35And lebron
08:37It's it's it's hard when you can't top the lead in which
08:40I wish you the best
08:42Well, that what that is a funny uh, that is a funny thing that in our show
08:47Lonnie keeps keeps referring to him and lance as lebron and brawny
08:52and at one point lance just says
08:54we're not we're on not they're on the same team we hate each other
08:58uh, I don't you know, I I just think that this is
09:04So fun to watch because uh
09:08For every athlete there comes that reckoning day where they have to hang it up
09:13And lonnie refuses to accept that and it and
09:17With the help of sam and with the help of you know golden kind of egging him on he gets
09:23back to the
09:24you know the spotlight
09:26Whether he succeeds
09:28Well, you'll have to watch and see but um
09:31But yeah, I I just think that's a that's always a fun journey to follow
09:36I thought the wardrobe department you guys killed it the mike's hard lemonade sweater
09:41I mean the women's golf shirt the leather outfits I guess
09:44It was something that did anyone take any memento
09:47From it because I I just thought you guys killed it every time you guys came on screen
09:51There was something that was catching my attention that you guys were wearing you were that woman's golf shirt a
09:55lot, right?
09:56I wore loud last night
09:58What were those things you said it had some kind of vents that had a name?
10:01Uh darts
10:02Darts
10:02That's your like yeah
10:04I was like that's a real thing you're like oh, yes
10:06Darts is very much a real thing
10:09Would you mind mentioning darts like darts?
10:12Luke, can you just say you're where it has darts?
10:15Yeah, the the wardrobe designer did an unbelievable job and it was one of those classic things where it felt
10:21like
10:21I was putting on like a superhero outfit like handmade slacks, you know special shirt perfect shoes that matched your
10:29belt
10:30um, and then you know had a had a friend say like yeah
10:33You ought to be sponsored by radio shack next day
10:35You get in and there's a you know
10:38Most movies are like yeah, we couldn't get it or it's you know
10:41Um, but it was great wardrobe. Yeah, there was there was
10:46I mean that was such a golden opportunity especially and and I think it's also commentary at the same time
10:52Lonnie's old school
10:53He doesn't understand all the the current
10:55Golfers who are into nutrition and working out and
10:59Studying his swing patterns. He's just like
11:02Have some buffalo wild wings cupcake chardonnay. Yeah, exactly and uh
11:06You know, he's also like no, we should we should these clothes look good
11:11uh, so we wanted to we wanted because and and
11:16To the credit of the pga they were like yeah, we're up for it. Have some fun. Yeah, that is
11:20that's the great thing, too
11:21Yeah, those guys were up for it. Yeah, I was gonna ask you how the golf community is is receiving
11:26this
11:27uh, well, we you've been at some turn I've been at some tournaments and they're kind of looking out
11:31They're kind of giving me the side eye like are you making fun?
11:35Yeah, yeah
11:37It's like yeah
11:38Yeah, we are a little bit and myself and myself
11:42Uh, but we're also, you know, we're we're showing reverence to the game. Yeah as well
11:47Uh, uh, and it's such a famously buttoned up game, but regular people that know it or that play it
11:55know how funny
11:56It can be, too. Yeah, just playing with your friends or playing poorly
11:59That's another favorite moment when we I think we're we're still at the corn fairy tour and
12:05Fortune just improvised
12:07This moment where she gets the gallery to chant balls deep
12:16So you've done it in one take I did it or you said I said balls deep and you said
12:21then we did another take where I'm like
12:26Did get a memo from the corn fairy tour corn fairy tour it's okay once let's not make it a
12:32thing
12:32You know, we don't want it to be the model
12:37But just playing around with those devices that it's such a quiet game
12:41But that lonnie would rather have the crowd cheering for him and going crazy
12:45Um, those are just kind of funny
12:48Observations to point out this show featured three of my favorite songs of all time the thong song
12:53Oh, and and of course the chili's baby back rib song
12:56What about the in those scenes were there any funny outtakes to come of that and what what about that
13:01kind of music from that?
13:02And of course like the chilies makes that so funny and connects with an audience because I couldn't stop laughing
13:07Oh, man, we I it was one of the kind of these odd hollywood moments where I went walking through
13:13you know
13:13Really crowded set and I came across these two
13:17Harmonize
13:18No, no, you go baby baby baby
13:20Don't stop and then i'm gonna come in and but they were like they were like, you know the everly
13:24brothers working out
13:25You know a song but so focused
13:29They got jingles very seriously
13:31Yeah, yeah, but you were saying david gordon green was particularly focused about you guys getting the hansen bop song
13:38Oh, right
13:39You like kept texting like you you know the song like we all know we know
13:43relax
13:45Yeah, it is fun. It is fun that lonnie and sam have a fascination with fast
13:53fast food and songs. Yeah
13:55Yeah, yeah
13:56I was gonna say how I enjoyed how cisco thong song was like a part of your focus point right
14:03like that got you in the zone to play loose
14:05What would be your walk-up song or pump-up song in real life if you guys could choose?
14:10We were discussing we were talking about that
14:13um
14:14Kind of started thinking maybe classical right good because you don't my my original thought was paradise city by guns
14:20and roses
14:21But what happens if you walk out and you top it the paradise city?
14:24So maybe you want something just a little like show pan like a little
14:27Yeah, exactly all right fascinated by sho hay's walk-up song which
14:32And i'm feeling good. Oh, yeah, it's michael buble. Is that michael buble? Yeah
14:38Okay, canada's but it makes me laugh because i'm like does he think this is a cool song
14:47Or does it really pump them up? So I thought oh, it'd be funny to have your pump-up song
14:51be in ya or like
14:54spa music
14:58People are crying in the audience
15:03Or the gregorian chants
15:05Whatever that man was a long time
15:07Yeah, that's a dog commercial makes everyone cry right just to press everyone before you walk up
15:14You guys uh have actual real golfers in this show. No offense to you guys are real golfers for the
15:19show
15:19Is it harder for real golfers to be funny or for funny people to be real golfers?
15:24I always just think about this day that ricky fowler was there and he
15:30Just he's such a composed almost kind of stoic a guy
15:33But then when they gave him a few lines to deliver he was just perfect with them. Yeah
15:38um, and really funny and uh, I think you know, i've seen a few
15:43Press conferences with jordan speith where you know, he's he's got a good sense of humor as I think a
15:48lot of these guys, too
15:50um, tony tony tony was um
15:53Great guy and we're we're thankful for all of our golfers to be in the series, but he was like
16:00I'm so scared
16:03He was like, but he really wanted to do it. He's like, how do you guys do this? I'm like,
16:06don't worry about it
16:07It only takes one to you know, just keep doing it
16:10I'm like, how do you hit a ball with yeah, you know a thousand people walking? He's like trust me
16:15I'd much rather do that. So it is
16:17Uh, it is fascinating this the different skill sets and how we're like, oh, this is no
16:23We mess up all the time, but they were trying to make it perfect
16:26And you're concerned that john daly is going to hit you with a cease and desist letter
16:31Daly might come after the hawk
16:34He'll be a big fan of the show
16:36But the hawks the hawk doesn't he lives on a bus. He doesn't have an address
16:42So does daily so you're gonna wind up in the same parking lot buses will be chasing each other
16:48throughout the us
16:49And we will speed because if he offers me i'm gonna throw him i'll throw a cease and desist back
16:54at him
16:54I don't know what on what grounds or what or what address to send it to right right yeah
17:01When you put something on film that lasts forever, no one wants to be tim robbins in bull durham who
17:05can't throw a baseball
17:06So when you're playing it's it's rough. It's a great movie
17:10It is right like if you throw the baseball before so you're going out you're playing professional golfers
17:14Were you at all concerned or how much prep did you have?
17:17Do you wanted to make it look like you actually knew how to swing a golf club when you put
17:22it on film forever?
17:24Well, luke has a really good swing
17:27I kind of have an okay swing. I mean we
17:30We I was just trying to make my swing look good not even worry about hitting the ball
17:34But even that made me swear realize okay. I don't take it back very for yeah
17:39It is something you think about it's uh, and you know, but I think
17:46There might have been a golf double for me there might have been
17:51There may not have been
17:53Who's to say they might have just been for love suits. They looked amazing to me
17:57Well, jimmy was talking about this the hardest piece of acting was when you right
18:03Just shanked your shot, but still the camera didn't see it. They were just filming from the waist up. So
18:08you still had to finish
18:10Oh
18:11In front of your head you're like that is the worst shot
18:15I hope I didn't knock that person out
18:19Who do you think lonnie's favorite or who do you think lonnie's ultimate foursome would be if you were here?
18:26Uh, oh
18:26Oh
18:33Sexually cheryl teagues
18:37Connie contain
18:38Connie wait is that right tanya at this point can I get in there
18:45And i'll keep it cool between golden and lonnie but helen murren
18:52It's classic classic dame speaking shakespeare in his ear
18:56I think lonnie would love he'd just love like a fun group. It'd be like lee trevino
19:01uh, he'd probably like baba watson
19:07And oh gosh
19:09cory pavin a little guy
19:12Stick a little guy out there the mustache mustache the mustache yeah it works
19:16One is my fault cory pavin
19:18I'm sorry the uh, ucla one of the best storylines of the show
19:21I think is the lonnie hawkins hand injury the evolution of the homemade cast
19:26I was telling luke last night the line about the business section the obituaries was there anything uh
19:30Prop wise that didn't make the cut into adding to the hand in the cast
19:35Speaking of the hand there was a we had a great flashback moment where there was a great guy on
19:40the crew named fred
19:42Who got to play my caddy during the flashback and in the flashback?
19:47They had to take the cast off will's hand and we we finish
19:52We finish a scene and we're on camera and fred shake will's hand and we'll just
19:59Just gave him a nice firm handshake. We'll just oh
20:04Yeah, that was that he came in strong
20:06uh
20:07I think we added everything we that was a work in progress blue masking tape the news
20:13We're like what else always changes put some tissue in there
20:17Now let's just use newspaper
20:19And then that was all luke who came up with
20:22You know was that your own obituary
20:24On the thing and then and then it was like oh when I take it off it should look horrible
20:29Uh, and my makeup artist autumn was like, oh, I know how to
20:33Create this textural thing where it literally looks like well, you'll have to watch and see
20:37But uh, it did not look good. Yeah
20:40We were saying how funny that line was
20:42I mean, you're known for the most iconic memorable lines. I've been reciting your line since I was a kid
20:47You know, I drive a Dodge Stratus. Yes favorite line
20:51What's your favorite line from the show? I love Dodge Stratus. Oh, it's such a goodie. That's for sure
20:58uh, uh
20:59Favorite line from this show the show. Yeah, because there's so many quotable lines from all three of you
21:03um
21:04She got me going with
21:06Because we started realizing that that
21:10Sam has Lonnie's back no matter what and they're they're a couple of sociopaths at time
21:16They'll just launch at anyone. We just encourage each other constantly
21:21She punches first and asks questions later
21:24But when you yelled at when you called those guys nut boys
21:29What are you looking at nut boy?
21:32He looked at me like what? Did you just call them nut boys?
21:36That's perfect
21:37It will be I will be curious to see what lines people take from the show
21:43I mean these guys have the most iconic like you said iconic lines
21:46We just went to a world cup game and walking through the crowd for like 20 minutes people would just
21:53yell
21:54His quotes. Yeah, and from there by the old school like you're my boy blue
21:58Like it's so cool to see people's I get in trouble because I
22:03People will yell things at me that I forgot was in a movie
22:07So I was I was once driving in a car and this and someone pulled up and was like hey,
22:12well
22:13Why are you so sweaty?
22:16I
22:17Don't need this
22:18No, I literally was trying to I did not it went over my head that it was from stepbrothers
22:23And I go oh because I was just on a bike ride
22:26She goes no
22:29You're doing it wrong. You're doing it wrong. She's like from because you're watching cops
22:33Oh, that's right. Never mind
22:38Got in trouble for not remembering
22:41I speak for I speak for all of us radio low-lifes when I say the show was universally loved
22:44by everyone
22:45And this may be the final question we have time for and I made my wife watch it with me
22:49And at first she goes oh another golf show
22:51She ended up liking it perhaps more than I did
22:53I liked it a lot
22:54Yeah, I think it's much more than just a golf show family dynamics relationships everything you could ask for
22:59But because you guys were so entrenched in golf is there one rule?
23:03You think that they should change in golf add immediately to make it a more fun sport
23:07Will was saying yesterday that he'd like for the game to be more dangerous
23:11And then we were started saying like yeah certain holes you get hunted
23:15Other other other other other holes other holes
23:18There's wild game that chases you you could reach in for your ball and there's a there's a tarantula
23:25There's a python
23:28There's a scorpion I would I was thinking like bear traps
23:32Just step in there's a false you fall into like a six-foot pit quicksand instead of sticks and bunkers
23:39I mean not every tournament. Maybe there's just one tournament. That's unbelievably dangerous
23:45Yeah, exactly
23:49There are if they they have changed a bunch of rules in the last few years that seem pretty good
23:55about you know
23:55A guy addressing the ball on the green and it rotates, you know
23:59A millimeter and you know the guy gets a two-stroke penalty. So I think they've changed that for the
24:05better
24:06I
24:07I told I I suggested to ricky fowler
24:10that
24:11Golfers should start
24:13Audibilizing the way tennis players will grunt when they hit
24:17And like I think to liven up the game a little bit like on that first tee, you know at
24:22the masters just
24:23Out an impact just scream like, you know
24:27I'm wearing women's underwear
24:29Oh, I wonder what they're gonna say
24:34And then ricky to his credit then he said i'll try i'll try
24:40I'll have to give it a try
24:42Adds a whole new layer. Yeah, thank you all so much
