00:00I want you to go full Jack Nicholson in The Shining and just, let's see what happens.
00:07Sam Delich, Carla Day, how the bloody hell are you?
00:10Great.
00:10Very bloody well.
00:11Great, very happy to be here.
00:13Well, congratulations to you both on Territory.
00:15It's probably the best Australian series that I've seen in a long, long time.
00:18Oh my gosh.
00:20Inflate our ego more.
00:22What was it about this series that made you want to get involved?
00:24Oh my gosh.
00:26I have never actually seen an Australian series like this.
00:29So when I read it, I kind of went, whoa, you know, this isn't just like a usual kind of
00:33outback tale.
00:34Like it's actually a character piece, which is so rare.
00:38And the sheer size of it, just so epic.
00:40And I think the fact that we knew that we would be shooting on location on a cattle station, I
00:45mean like.
00:47Who gets that experience?
00:48Yeah, who gets that experience?
00:49Honestly.
00:50I wanted to get in there.
00:51I wanted to explore Shani's character and I wanted to experience that world because I hadn't before.
00:58So that was me.
00:59Moondrive to get in there.
01:00I want to talk a little bit about the croc egg scene for you specifically.
01:04Now, I want to believe that you were there a few feet away from a crocodile, but health and safety
01:08makes me feel like that probably was creative camera angles.
01:11Tell me a little bit about that.
01:12Maybe magic, man.
01:14Yeah, well, we did actually get into a chopper.
01:17The chopper didn't take off.
01:18But it was really, really fun to film that moment.
01:23Like, it's a moment where you get to see a little bit more lightheartedness in Shani's story and the back
01:30and forth with Marshall there as well.
01:32And they're just like, they're so ecstatic and happy afterwards and going out and getting in there and pretending that
01:39there's a croc there that wasn't a croc there.
01:42It was really fun.
01:43It was just like, it was just like jittery and fun.
01:46And yeah, I loved it.
01:48We did get close to crocs when we were at the, oh, wait, you weren't there.
01:51No, I wasn't.
01:52But what is it called?
01:53There's a croc place.
01:56There's a few watering holes with crocodiles in the antenna.
01:59We did see a few of them.
02:00But all the other.
02:01Oh, in Darwin.
02:01Oh, the croc.
02:02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:03There's like a place where you can go and like look at crocs and feed crocs and stuff.
02:07Oh, when I saw the eggs, got very close to the croc there.
02:12Now, Sam.
02:13Yes.
02:13Your character is really enthralling throughout this whole series.
02:17Oh, I appreciate that.
02:17Brooding and dark, but also oddly funny and kind of charismatic.
02:21Well.
02:22Well, that's what we said.
02:24Tell me a little bit about getting into character.
02:26It was actually really hard to tell you the truth.
02:28I kind of, I felt like I knew this guy already.
02:31But the hardest thing was his sort of mental state throughout the show.
02:35You know, he starts out as like cheeky and fun and kind of the leader of our little band
02:40of musketeers.
02:41But as the show progresses, it kind of gets darker and darker and darker.
02:44And so that was, yeah, it was definitely a challenge diving into that headspace.
02:49Especially, you know, like episode three, for example, or episode six, not to spoil anything.
02:54It's a little rough around the edges.
02:56There's a lot.
02:57And I think, yeah, but yeah, finding the levels for me.
03:01It was the biggest thing.
03:01I get to, I think out of all the characters, I kind of get to have the most fun in
03:05the
03:05show.
03:06And Greg McLean helped that.
03:08You know, I'm a big fan of just going all out, making bold choices.
03:11And Greg would reel me in and I'll be like, oh, go, go, go.
03:14I think the best bit of direction he gave me was, you know, not to ruin anything, but
03:20in episode six, he sort of said, I want you to go full Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
03:24And just, let's see what happens.
03:26That's great.
03:27Now, the idea of the Aussie larrikin almost as a villain, it feels really refreshing to
03:31me watching.
03:32Totally.
03:32Totally.
03:32It felt almost John Jarrett, Wolf Creek-esque.
03:35Was there more inspiration there?
03:37I spoke to Greg a lot about Wolf Creek, actually.
03:39I love Wolf Creek.
03:41Yeah, I think, like I said, it was about the light and shade.
03:44You know, when Rich needed to be dark, Greg was like, let's really go there.
03:49Let's go scary.
03:49And when we needed a bit more humor and lightness, I think we kind of bounced off each other pretty
03:56well.
03:56Yeah, absolutely.
04:03Now, the series is perfectly set up for a second season.
04:07Without giving too much away and no spoilers or anything like that, what would you like to
04:10see from a second in storm?
04:12I don't know.
04:14Just more.
04:15More of it.
04:16It's great how it is.
04:18And I would love to see, like, the stories continue and to see the intricacies that follow
04:25with the second season.
04:26I think there's so many more characters in the Northern Territory that can be introduced.
04:30I mean, just the local bullcatchers and ringers that we got to meet.
04:34There's characters that almost are too large for screen.
04:37And there's so many, so many people you can put on, you know, you can film and get in
04:43the show.
04:43And I think, yeah, just expanding the story a bit more.
04:46Yeah.
04:46And there's a lot of stories in the story of Territory, right?
04:50There's a lot of people, a lot's going on.
04:52And so just expanding on that as well and seeing where that would take us.
04:56That'd be really cool.
04:57That'd be really cool.
