Canadian wildfires send massive smoke plumes over British Columbia

Thick plumes of smoke rose from wildfires burning near Pemberton, British Columbia, on Saturday, as helicopters worked above smoke-shrouded hills amid Canada's ongoing wildfire season. The images came as wildfires continued to burn across Canada. Federal officials said 69 new fires were reported overnight, bringing the national total to 955 active fires. More than 28,500 square kilometers (11,000 square miles) have burned nationwide. Canadian officials said wildfire activity in Ontario has begun to slow and that more favorable weather conditions are expected in the coming days. The fires have also sent smoke across the Canada-US border, prompting air quality alerts in parts of the United States. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rated air quality as unhealthy across a broad area stretching from southern Ontario through parts of the US Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Saturday.
