Aerial footage shows huge plume of smoke from wildfire in Spain's Catalonia

Aerial footage released by Catalan firefighters on Thursday (July 3) showed a huge plume of smoke rising from a wildfire burning in La Bisbal d’Emporda area of northeastern Spain. The blaze prompted authorities to confine residents in several municipalities and close a number of roads as emergency crews worked to contain the fire. The wildfire has burned about 750 hectares (1,853 acres), according to provisional estimates from the Catalan rural agents service.

Authorities urged residents to remain indoors and follow instructions from emergency services as the fire spread through the heavily forested Les Gavarres area. Catalan President Salvador Illa described the fire as being of "significant dimensions" and warned that it remained out of control.
