01:36where iconic corners, unpredictable weather, and fearless commitment
01:40have created some of the sport's most memorable moments.
01:47Well, welcome to the paddock here in Spa for the F1 show this evening.

02:19It's a nice, relaxed atmosphere after the madness of Silverstone, the fresh air.
02:25We've had a sunny day today, largely sunny day, a tiny bit of rain just to make sure we know
02:30that we're in spa.
02:31But it is one of those...
02:32I really like the atmosphere here.
02:34Lots of fans, lots of camping, all walking in as we come in in the morning.
02:38So, yeah, I like spa.

02:40Yeah, I would say this is where the traditionists like to come to.

02:46I think that there's a thing to be said about quality over quantity.
02:50You know, in this paddock, you do have waffles, you've got french fries, you've got a good coffee
02:54stand, and then you've got the beautiful view of Radion.

03:37The problem is you get to the top, you know, we, you know, from a range up right on.

03:45And then it just keeps going and going and going and going.

09:23scratched anything as well, of course.

10:15And a smell of waffles that is permeating over the paddock.
10:18Max Verstappen's manager, Raymond Vermeulen, has just come for his afternoon waffles.
10:23They've run out.
10:24Well, we can waffle along and see if he wants to listen to that instead.
10:27We'll do that, shall we?
10:28Because there's a lot to waffle about.
10:30It's been quite the day of track action.
10:32There is your championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, climbing into his Mercedes.
10:35Just 25 points in the lead now.
10:38And out they filed, apart from Fernando Alonso, Jack Crawford, in his Aston Martin.
10:43For this first session, Lando Norris, 10-place grid penalty for him.
10:46As he goes into the weekend and quite a bit of work on his car before we got going.
10:52Now, this is Liam Lawson struggling for grip.
10:54Yeah, lots of drivers struggling early on in the session.
10:57The track, I think, was a bit green.
10:58And we heard a lot of comments from drivers on the radio who were struggling with lock-ups.
11:03So, the rear of the car sliding.
11:05George Russell talking about four-wheel sliding as well.
11:08Kimi Antonelli, though, he didn't have a balance issue.
11:10He had an issue with this man.
11:11Carlos Sainz getting in his way down at the corner, Paul Frere.
11:15And that cost Carlos Sainz a reprimand when he went to see the stewards.
11:19Sorry, this incident cost him a reprimand.
11:22As he was meant to stay either in the pit lane or not cross the white line.
11:26He did a bit of a mixture and that didn't help.
11:28That certainly isn't helping.
11:29Just the one upgrade on the racing balls this weekend.
11:32Arvid Lindblad's got it.
11:33And Liam Lawson struggling through the chicane.
11:35Yeah, got a big snap of oversteer here.
11:37Lance Stroll had a lot of understeer.
11:39And that put him into the gravel.
11:41And as we can see on the front, the front nose camera came off the car.
11:45Just with a vibration across the curve.
11:47The session ended, though, with Oscar Piastri pulling over initially to the side of the track.
11:51Being told to stop the car.
11:53And then the team instructing him to drive back slowly.
11:56A hydraulic issue putting an end to his session.
11:59But it left this man, Max Verstappen, as the fastest on track.
12:031.47.0.
12:04A couple of tenths ahead of his teammate Isaac Hadjar.
12:07So a good start to the day for Max Verstappen.
12:10Lots of fans here getting some very good vantage points.
12:13That hydraulic point, though, problem for Oscar Piastri.
12:16Cost him 19 minutes of the FP2 session.
12:19By the time he got out, Lewis Hamilton had already done this.
12:21Yeah, Hamilton going deep at the final bus stop chicane.
12:24And Carlos Sainz, this time on the other side of the fence, I should say.
12:30He was the one complaining about cars in his way there.
12:33We see the Red Bull just dipping a wheel into that gravel and got away with it.
12:38And Max Verstappen complaining about the shifts on his gearbox once again.
12:41Now, here's Lando Norris getting all out of shape at the corner with no name.
12:45We had to red flag the session because there was a lot of gravel that had been kicked up.
12:48So that's the first of two red flags that we had during FP2.
12:52It allowed Oscar Piastri a bit more time in the garage to fix his car and to get back out
12:57on the track.
12:57And still Liam Lawson pushing the extremities of those track limits and going a bit too wide again.
13:02He had a few adventures in that racing boat.
13:05Ended up a little bit behind his teammate, Arvid Lindblad.
13:08But Pierre Gasly, look at this, bit of understeer on the way in.
13:11Then gets, I think, slightly offline with that understeer.
13:15Then the rear came around and put him off track.
13:17Couldn't avoid the end of the barrier.
13:20And that did a lot of damage to the rear of his Alpine.
13:23That is quite the rebuild for a Friday night for the Alpine team that they're going to have to contend
13:29with.
13:30Nothing wrong with Pierre Gasly, which is great to see even though the doctor was called down there.
13:35And nothing wrong with Kimi Antonelli's pace on the track.
13:37The only man in the 146s, championship leader, looking very much at home here at Spa.
13:42Yeah, a devastating lap, really.
13:44And especially when you compare his pace to that of his teammate, George Russell, over a second away from Antonelli's
13:50time.
13:50Well, hopefully that paints the picture for you as to what happened in FP1 and FP2.
13:54I'm going to go and find an artist.
13:55Simon, Naomi.
13:57Well, let's take a look at our championship standing, starting with the Drivers' Championship.
14:04Antonelli leads the way with 179 points.
14:07His teammate, who was 68 points down in Monaco, has managed to close that gap down to just 25 points.
14:13Leclerc's win in Silverstone puts him just 39 points behind Hamilton.
14:17And the pair of the Ferraris are followed by both of the McLaren boys.
14:20Verstappen down in seventh, looking like he might be in with a fighting chance here.
14:24Unfortunately for him, his teammate, 52 points at the moment, has a 10-place grid penalty here.
14:30And rounding up your top 10 are Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson with only a three-point gap between the
14:34pair.
14:35Moving on to the bottom 12, four consecutive points finishers puts Lindblad two points ahead of Behrman,
14:41who is tied on points with Coler Pinto.
14:43And then further down the order, Hulkenberg, Bottas, Perez and Stroll all yet to score a single point.
14:48Moving on to the Constructors' title, Mercedes are clear out in front with 333 points.
14:55Ferrari, 78 points adrift, but with two wins in just three races, things are looking on the up for them.
15:00And McLaren are a further 76 points down.
15:03Red Bull, who have the fastest power unit, according to the ADUO, are down in fourth on 128 points.
15:09And then the tightest battle on the grid for best of the rest is Alpine and Racing Bulls,
15:13with just one point, splitting the two of them.
15:15Haas are arguably the most under-resourced team on the grid,
15:19but they lead Williams, Audi, Aston Martin and newcomer Cadillac, who are yet to score any points.
15:25Shall we hear from our championship leader? Here he is, Antonelli.
15:31Hi, Kimi. Looked like a pretty decent turnaround for you today.
15:34I think it was an FP1, you described the car as edgy, and then obviously top of the pile in
15:38FP2.
15:39Just take me through that day and where that improvement's come from.
15:42Yeah, we made big changes with the car, and it was a lot better.
15:46So that's a good direction.
15:49Of course, there's still a lot of work to do as a team and, you know, as well with my
15:55driving.
15:56But, yeah, it was a much better session, and now looking forward to tomorrow.
16:01In terms of the rest of the weekend, what more do you need to focus on?
16:04And I guess the target is obviously to get another win under your belt.
16:08Yeah, no, of course.
16:10You know, we've...
16:12Obviously, Silverstone was a great weekend, but came out with no points, which obviously hurt a lot.
16:18But, you know, this weekend, obviously, different one, new challenge.
16:23And the goal is to still maximise every session, every time I go in the car, and, yeah, then maximise
16:30the result.
16:31But definitely today was a good end, but now a lot of work ahead of tomorrow.
16:38Kind of running out of superlatives already, aren't you, for Kimi?
16:41I know it's only practice, but he's just so wise beyond his years, isn't he?
16:45He is, you know, and I think there's been a few little things, if I was to criticise anything,
16:49there's been a few little things like the yellow flag in qualifying in Austria, I think it was.
16:53I think Elastic and Silverstone, looking back, would have done something different with the issue with the car.
16:58He pitted immediately.
16:59So that is just experience.
17:02But, you know, I think Toto said from the outset, the kid is fast, and we can work on all
17:07those other things,
17:08and they are working on it pretty quickly.
17:10Right, technical delegates report.
17:11I'm going to have to zoom in on this.

17:17I'm going to read it for you.
17:19Following FP1, the scooter-reer Ferrari HP team electronically returned two sets of dry-weather tyres
17:26in accordance with articles B64.1, whatever.
17:30However, the corresponding tyres were not physically returned to the appointed tyre supplier
17:34before the start of FP2, non-compliant with article B64.2.
17:39That's on both cars.
17:42Last time Aston did that, grid penalty.
17:44Yeah, so, just to explain a little bit.
17:48So at the end of P1, most people use two tyres in P1.
17:52Then they have to be electronically returned in a system to tell Pirelli which tyres you're given back
17:57and which you should have left.
17:58They're all barcoded and scanned in and out.
18:00But they have to physically be sent back to Pirelli.
18:04Pirelli stripped them.
18:05The reason that they have to physically be sent back is Pirelli start to look at them for any damage,
18:10any cuts, anything they need to change in the tyre, the pressures, for example, any safety issues.
18:15So they've not...
18:16When Aston Martin did it a long time ago, and it was a bone of contention at that point,
18:21we physically returned the tyres but didn't electronically return the right tyre.
18:26Oh, OK.
18:26So Pirelli physically had the tyre back, and we got a one-position grid penalty for Nico Hulkenberg,
18:32and we were very, very sore, and still am very, very sore about that.
18:39But they've improved the electronic process.
18:42I think the fact that it's not physically returned is more of an issue.
18:46That is more of an issue because the idea is you could have used that tyre for pit stop practice,
18:51Pirelli don't have all the right data.
18:52So I think, in my opinion, that needs to be more than a slap on the wrist.
18:56That needs to be some sort of penalty.
18:58I just asked one of the Pirelli guys who was running by me.
19:01He doesn't know what the penalty would be, but I think we need to weigh the outcome of that
19:07because if Pirelli or the FA let someone away with that this week, then where does it go from there?
19:12So I think there's potentially a penalty coming.
19:14It's the age-old story about consistency, right?
19:16Like, even though we feel that this might be harsh to give a penalty for something like that,
19:20if the tyres were returned, but it's just sort of a procedural issue.
19:23It's harsh, but you've got to be consistent across the board, right?
19:26Yeah, I think the only thing to that is neither driver, it's neither driver's fault.
19:32It's not, you know, Lewis Hamilton is not running down to Pirelli with a set of tyres.
19:35Is there a tyre guy getting the blame tonight?
19:37Yeah, there's a tyre guy getting the blame for sure.
19:39But it's a team procedural thing.
19:41So maybe that means they try and hurt the team by some sort of fine rather than the two drivers
19:47who are not to blame.
19:49They'll be feeling so guilty.
19:51I mean, those, I feel bad for the tyre guys too, don't they?
19:53Of course.
19:54Because they do a great job.
19:54A thankless tyre sometimes, you'd think.
19:57You know, they're running around like headless chickens.
19:59I'd be really interested to see how that happened because they do this so often.
20:03You know, this is week in, week out stuff.
20:05And there was nothing untoward happening between P1 and P2.
20:09It wasn't shortened or it wasn't, like, really waning.
20:13There's not really an excuse for that.

22:21In the end, this was something I've been dreaming of my whole life, getting to Formula One.
22:25So I've been really living my dream this year.
22:27And it's been amazing.
22:30But how was Silverson?
22:31How was that experience?
22:32Because you're racing an F1 car around a track where you used to watch them go around as a kid.
22:38Is that right?
22:39Yeah, it was very special.
22:40When I was five, I went there for the first time with my dad.
22:43And I was watching when I was really falling in love with the sport.
22:46So going there this year was very special for me.
22:50You know, 13 years on to be going there as a race driver in front of the home crowd.
22:55So it was a very, very special moment.
22:57The thing is, you were racing around Silverson last week at 180, 200 miles an hour.
23:03If I politely ask you to give me a lift back to London, you can't do it.
23:06Because you haven't got a driving license, haven't you?
23:08Can you not go to the DVLA and say, look, here's my super license.

23:13Yeah, unfortunately that doesn't work.

26:13With regards to the upgrade, it's only on half of its car, interestingly, this weekend.
26:19It's got to be worth a couple of attempts, you'd think that.
26:21But on the evidence of what we've seen, anyway, in both sessions, it was a couple of attempts
26:25ahead of Liam Lloydson.
26:26But it was whoever got ahead in qualifying, whoever was faster in qualifying Silverstone
26:30got the upgrade.
26:31Yeah, I think that's great.
26:34You know, it gives them a bit of extra motivation, a bit of an extra incentive to do well.
26:39Not that they should need it, but it does help.
26:42You know, just an extra little carrot.
26:44So, yeah, great innovative thinking.
26:46And I'd be interested to find out how much it's actually worth.
26:50Because they were pretty quick to say that it's not massive, but I'm sure it's worth something.
26:59You have to say, that feels like a really happy camp at Racing Bulls right now.
27:03I mean, they've got a fast car, they've got two drivers who are constantly scoring points
27:07when the opportunity presents itself.

27:27They've leapfrogged them, and they're doing a brilliant job as a team.

27:43And amongst them, a lot of the F1 drivers.

30:04And also meet a lot of the drivers, and there were friends of mine that I only get to see

30:08and now I take the kids along, so they have a little reunion with their young friends as well.
30:12Highlight for you this year?
30:14Doing the balcony with Valentino Rossi and Lando was pretty special outside of driving.
30:20You know, Valet was a childhood hero of mine, and super cool to have them there together.
30:24In the cockpit, driving the Senna test car from 1993 with the Lamborghini V12 engine was just magical.
30:31So, wow, okay, we've got some shots of that.
30:34Got the old race suit on.
30:37We've got a piece on that one, but, I mean, tell me, going up with that must be great.
30:41Yeah, it was.
30:42I mean, I got to drive four special cars.
30:44This one sounded incredible with the V12, but I also drove the car in which James Hunt crossed the line
30:50to win the world championship in Fuji in 76, and then two Ford GT40s from that.

30:57The iconic finish in Le Mans 66.
30:59They had all three cars together from 66, and I got to share that experience with Tom Christensen
31:06and Dario Franchitti, two good friends of mine.
31:08And just driving up the hill together, Liam Lawson was in one of the cars, and it was super cool
31:13because, you know, Bruce McLaren won the race, and he had the Kiwi for Liam.
31:17He was really emotional, I saw him when he got out of the car, he was super emotional.
31:21And then he found out the two mechanics that they were Kiwis as well, and it was just cool
31:26to see.
31:26It does feel like whenever you're there, and this is obviously my first occasion, but as
31:30I was walking around, I just felt like every corner you turn, there's just more incredible
31:34motorsport history.
31:35Karun, I'm a little disappointed that you didn't mention the highlight of your weekend
31:38was poking Lando in the eye.
31:39You didn't mention that.
31:42Well, I'm not sure that's a highlight for anybody, apart from all the memes that have come

38:50But then luckily, all of the teams bring their own doctor.
38:54So Raoul, their doctor, come in, and he's done this very, very nice bandage.

39:25I mean, how do you sum up that day, the feeling in the car?
39:27I mean, pretty decent, I think, for us.
39:30The balance is straightaway there, just fine-tuning a little bit with the car, which hopefully unlocks
39:35a little bit more pace.
39:36But honestly, I think from what we have as a package, it's been a good day.
39:42You've reverted on the rear wing, taking off the Macarena rear wing.
39:45Can you tell us a little bit more about that?
39:47Did it really change things?
39:48And what's the outlook for the rest of the weekend, early signs from the competition?
39:53Yeah, it just opens differently.

39:56I mean, we just focus on ourselves.

40:24I mean, we've obviously seen him a bit downbeat lately, but it feels like things are on the
40:28up a little bit, maybe.
40:29Yeah, he seems a little bit more settled today.
40:30I think that's probably because of where he's finished on the timesheet.
40:33I guess the one thing is, even through last year, we hear Max Verstappen complaining about
40:37shifts quite a lot.
40:38There's a lot of downforce that have come off these cars, and that affects everything.
40:42So there's not as much load on the tires, so the shifts will feel a lot rougher.
40:46But he seems much more susceptible to that than others, or at least more vocal about it
40:52than others.
40:53But yeah, he does seem a little bit settled.
40:55I think he's, maybe he enjoys questions about his shifts more than he enjoys questions about
41:00moving teams.
41:02Right, yeah, exactly.
41:03I was going to say that.
41:04He said the gear shifts were unacceptable, but I think what he's finding unacceptable
41:08is the amount of journalists that are asking the same question.
41:11I mean, it's the same every year, isn't it, around this sort of time, a couple of races
41:15before the summer break.
41:17But he is the domino that if he falls, the rest will follow, really.
41:22He's the key to the whole driver market, isn't he?
41:24Yeah, I think so.
41:25And I think, you know, he's obviously trying to get himself in the best team he possibly
41:28can.
41:28I actually think Red Bull, you know, have come out much stronger than I'd expected this
41:32year, because we thought the engine wasn't going to be anywhere near as good as it's proven
41:36to be.
41:37So maybe that shows him hope to stay within that Red Bull camp.
41:41He's pushing hard for upgrades and changes and all of these things.
41:45But where does he go?
41:47You know, McLaren looks very tied down.
41:49Mercedes looks very tied down.
41:51Do teams want the Max Verstappen effect, even though he is one of the best, if not the
41:57best driver we currently have on the grid?
41:59Well, a lot of rumors about him potentially going to McLaren, although Zac Brown has said
42:03he is committed to his drivers.
42:05And I think one of his drivers is pretty happy today because Lando Norris was second.
42:08So let's hear from him.
42:12So, Lando, first day out on track here at Spa.
42:14Pretty happy with that display?
42:19I would say so.
42:20I think in terms of pace at the end, we seemed good on one lap.
42:30Yeah, we seemed reasonable, but there's been quite a few times throughout the season where
42:34we've seen good in FP2 and we're off come qualifying.
42:37So now today was more just getting through our plan in FP1.
42:41It wasn't the cleanest FP1.
42:42We had a few problems and a few issues which didn't allow us to get out of the garage as
42:46quickly as we wanted to.
42:48And obviously it would have been nice to get a few more laps in the end without the red
42:51flag, just to learn some more about high fuel.
42:53But otherwise, I think we made some improvements between the sessions.
42:58And we have to see if we can do another step into P3.
43:02We know you've got the grid drop to come, of course, but what's your thinking going into
43:05the weekend and also early signs from the competition?
43:09I mean, we've not really changed anything this weekend, so there's no reason for us to expect
43:13anything different.
43:16Yeah, Red Bull normally always just don't turn up on Friday, so we're going to get to tomorrow
43:21and they'll be just as quick or if not quicker.
43:24So let's just wait and see.
43:25I think we probably turned up with the Mercedes and the rest of them didn't, so I think we're
43:30still probably at the minute fourth fastest.
43:32But it seems like if we can get things right, then we might be a little bit closer than we
43:38were in Silverstone.
43:39So let's wait and see.
43:41Thanks, Landon.
43:43It's been very pragmatic this year, but nay, downbeat, because he knows he's got that 10-place
43:48grid penalty.
43:49This is the place where they take it.
43:51Just to explain again why, for those that might not have joined us earlier this weekend, why
43:55this is the place to take your engine penalty.
43:59Yeah, I think if you're to take a grid penalty, you try and choose the circuits where overtaken
44:03is the most likely in the race.
44:05So therefore, there's the least amount of effect by qualifying.
44:10So that's what you're trying to do.
44:12So you would avoid at all costs taking a penalty at Monaco.
44:15Now, this year, obviously, we've seen much more overtaken than we have in previous years,
44:19but that effect will still remain.
44:21I think we'll see lots more overtaken this year, but this is where you try and take a
44:25penalty if you can.
44:26So just on that, because as you say, typically, drivers are able to overtake here a lot.
44:31This year, we've seen a lot of overtaking.
44:32But according to George yesterday, he was saying that we're probably going to be seeing less
44:36of this yo-yo racing around here because he feels that, given the track's energy
44:40starved in the layout of the circuit, that he feels everyone will be on the same deployment
44:44strategy.
44:45Can you just give us a bit of an insight into what it's like?
44:48Yeah, I think what George is trying to say there is that using energy will be so hurtful
44:53to the rest of the lap.
44:54And I think the drivers have started to realise over the previous races that we've had that
45:00you need to be very careful with it.
45:02And actually, if you use it, you will pay it back later.
45:05So they're getting more to the point of doing what the engine thinks is optimal around the
45:09lap and actually just trying to overtake in the more traditional sense of overtaking.
45:14Now, that will mean that, hopefully, worst case, the overtaking is no harder than it was
45:18last year because they're all using similar type deployment.
45:21But it will be interesting to see, you know, even in Silverstone last weekend, very similar
45:26track from an energy point of view.
45:28You know, maybe a little bit better.
45:29But noticeable, definitely watching at home, the overtaking in the sprint, the overtaking
45:34in the main race.
45:34They seem to have learned a lot from the sprint.
45:36Now, here, they haven't had that learning.
45:38So I still think the beginning laps of the race is one to watch.

46:14It's the case the last couple of events.
46:16Let's be focused on ourselves, try to get the best from what we have, and we'll see tomorrow
