00:02The YouTube Book Stunt
00:04Okay, so for our first story, we're diving headfirst into the deep end of the YouTube gene pool.
00:09Meet Pedro Ruiz III, a 22-year-old from Minnesota with a YouTube channel,
00:15a pregnant girlfriend named Mona Lisa Perez,
00:17and an idea so monumentally stupid, it's almost a work of art.
00:22His plan?
00:23To go viral by having his girlfriend shoot him in the chest with a .50 caliber desert eagle
00:29while he held a hardcover encyclopedia in front of him.
00:32He was convinced the book would stop the bullet.
00:36Now, to be fair, he did a test run.
00:38He shot a different book, and the bullet didn't go through.
00:41So, in his mind, the science was settled.
00:44On June 26, 2017, with their three-year-old daughter watching, they set up the cameras.
00:51Mona Lisa stood just one foot away from Pedro, aimed the desert eagle,
00:54one of the most powerful handguns in the world,
00:57at the encyclopedia he was holding to his chest, and pulled the trigger.
01:01The .50 caliber bullet tore through the encyclopedia like it was tissue paper
01:05and slammed into Pedro's chest.
01:08He died instantly.
01:09His heart and lungs were obliterated.
01:12The video they hoped would make them famous did go viral, but not in the way they planned.
01:17Mona Lisa, seven months pregnant, was charged with second-degree manslaughter
01:21and sentenced to 180 days in jail.
01:24She gave birth to their second child while awaiting sentencing.
01:27So, what's the takeaway here?
01:29Pedro died for YouTube views, leaving behind two kids and a girlfriend
01:33who has to live with pulling the trigger.
01:35It just goes to show that chasing viral fame can lead you down some incredibly dark
01:40and permanent paths.
01:42A hardcover encyclopedia is not body armor.
01:45Who knew?
01:48The waterfall of bad decisions.
01:50Next up, we have the High on Life Squad.
01:54This was a YouTube channel with over half a million subscribers
01:57run by a group of friends who traveled the world doing extreme stunts.
02:01You know the type.
02:02Their whole brand was about living life to the fullest,
02:05which, in their case, meant being incredibly reckless for views.
02:09These guys, Riker Gamble and Alexei Liak, both 30,
02:12had already gotten themselves banned from Yellowstone National Park
02:16for five years for walking on fragile thermal features.
02:20They even posted the video online.
02:23So, you'd think they might have learned a lesson about respecting nature
02:26and, you know, not dying.
02:28You would be wrong.
02:30On July 3rd, 2018, Riker, Alexei, and Alexei's girlfriend, Megan Scraper,
02:36decided to climb to the top of Shannon Falls in British Columbia.
02:39This isn't some little cascade in a park.
02:42It's one of the tallest waterfalls in the province, dropping 335 feet.
02:48They got to the top, where a series of pools feed the main waterfall,
02:52and started walking along the slippery, moss-covered edge, filming content.
02:57Megan slipped and fell into the fast-moving current.
03:00The two guys, in a panic, jumped in to savor.
03:03The current was too strong.
03:05It swept all three of them over the edge,
03:08and they plunged approximately 100 feet down the waterfall,
03:12smashing into the rocks below.
03:14When emergency crews arrived, it was a recovery, not a rescue.
03:18The physical trauma was immense.
03:20Multiple blunt force injuries, shattered skulls, broken bones all over.
03:26They either died instantly on impact, or shortly after.
03:30The channel was flooded with tributes, but also a ton of criticism from people pointing out the obvious.
03:36They had a history of being reckless for the camera,
03:39and this time, it caught up to all three of them.
03:42A 100-foot drop onto solid rock, all for a few seconds of footage.
03:47Just, wow.
03:49The monsoon photo shoot.
03:52All right, let's head over to India for our next story.
03:55On July 16, 2024, a 27-year-old Instagram influencer named Anvi Kamdar,
04:02who had a quarter of a million followers,
04:04decided it was a brilliant idea to go to Kumbay Waterfall near Mumbai,
04:09during monsoon season.
04:11For those who don't know, monsoon season turns everything into a slippery, raging torrent of death.
04:18The waterfall itself is 300 feet tall, and it's notoriously dangerous when it's raining.
04:25Anvi and her seven friends arrived,
04:27and she immediately got to work filming Instagram reels at the very edge of the falls.
04:32She was trying to get the perfect shot, the one that would make all her followers jealous.
04:37To get a better angle, she started stepping backward,
04:40her eyes on her phone screen, not on her feet.
04:42You can see where this is going.
04:44She slipped on the wet, mossy rocks and tumbled right into the 300-foot-deep gorge.
04:50She actually survived the initial fall,
04:53but she was critically injured with multiple fractures,
04:56severe head trauma, and internal bleeding.
04:59Her friends, horrified, called for help.
05:02A massive rescue operation with over 50 people was launched,
05:06but because of the insane weather and treacherous terrain,
05:09it took them six hours to rappel down and reach her.
05:13They found her alive, but just barely.
05:16She was airlifted to a hospital, but died from her injuries shortly after arriving.
05:21She spent six hours broken and bleeding in a gorge,
05:25all because she stepped backward for an Instagram reel without looking.
05:28The authorities have since restricted access to the waterfall during monsoon season,
05:33which seems like something they should have done before someone had to die for it.
05:39The Alpine Cliffhanger
05:41For our fourth story, we're off to the Italian Alps,
05:45a place of stunning beauty and, as it turns out, spectacular stupidity.
05:50Meet Albert Derland, a 22-year-old YouTuber from Denmark.
05:55He was a comedian, a musician, and had over 235,000 followers.
06:01On July 28, 2021, he was filming a video on Mount Sisseda in Val Gardena.
06:08Now, this mountain is the real deal.
06:11We're talking breathtaking views, dramatic peaks,
06:14and sheer unforgiving cliffs that drop straight down.
06:19Albert was walking along a narrow path, right near the edge of one of these cliffs,
06:24filming himself for his next YouTube masterpiece.
06:27He was trying to capture the epic scenery, probably for a cool montage or something.
06:33He lost his footing.
06:34One wrong step on that narrow path, and he was gone.
06:39Albert fell 656 feet, that's 200 meters, straight down the mountainside.
06:46It wasn't a tumble.
06:48It was a straight-up, Looney Tunes-style plummet.
06:51He hit rocks on the way down, and the impact was catastrophic.
06:56Emergency services were called, and a rescue helicopter was dispatched.
07:00But when they found him at the base of the cliff, there was nothing they could do.
07:04The physical trauma was massive.
07:07His body was severely damaged.
07:10He was pronounced dead at the scene.
07:12His mother later confirmed the news to the Danish media,
07:15and his final video was, of course, never posted.
07:19He was 22 years old.
07:21All it took was one moment of inattention,
07:24one step too close to the edge while trying to get the perfect shot.
07:27A 656-foot drop is no joke.
07:32It's a permanent end to a promising career,
07:35all for a video that no one will ever see.
07:39The 10,000-calorie mission.
07:41And now for a story that proves that the path to hell is paved with,
07:46well, in this case, junk food.
07:49Meet Dmitry Nujansin, a 30-year-old fitness trainer and influencer from Russia.
07:55A fitness trainer.
07:56Remember that.
07:57In November of 2024, Dmitry decided to create some truly groundbreaking content.
08:03He embarked on an extreme weight gain challenge.
08:07His master plan was to eat 10,000 calories every single day,
08:12pack on a ton of weight,
08:13and then dramatically lose it all to promote his own weight loss program.
08:17You can't make this stuff up.
08:19So, for weeks, this supposed fitness expert gorged himself on cakes,
08:24fast food, and sugary drinks.
08:26He was documenting the whole thing on social media, posting photos and videos of his epic meals.
08:32And it worked.
08:33He gained 13 kilograms, or about 28.6 pounds, in just one month.
08:39His followers watched in real time as he ballooned, transforming from a fitness trainer into a cautionary tale.
08:46One night, after another glorious day of stuffing his face for his followers, Dmitry went to sleep.
08:52And he never woke up.
08:54He died in his sleep.
08:55He died in his sleep from heart failure.
08:56The preliminary autopsy confirmed it.
08:59His heart just gave out.
09:00The massive, sudden weight gain and the constant strain of processing 10,000 calories a day was too much for
09:07his system.
09:08His heart, the very engine he was supposed to be an expert on, just couldn't handle the abuse.
09:16The irony is so thick you could probably deep fry it.
09:19He was 30 years old.
09:21His social media page is still up.
09:23A bizarre, digital monument to one of the dumbest ideas I've ever covered.
09:27The Selfie Queen's Last Shot
09:31For our next story, we're heading to Hong Kong to meet Sophia Chung, a 32-year-old Instagram influencer who
09:39was all about that adventure life.
09:41Her feed was a curated collection of her posing in beautiful, and often dangerous, locations.
09:48Cliff edges, waterfalls, high ledges, you name it, she was there, smiling for the camera.
09:55On July 10, 2021, she and her friends went hiking at Ha Pak Lai Park, a scenic spot with a
10:03popular waterfall.
10:05Naturally, Sophia saw the waterfall and thought, selfie time.
10:10She climbed onto the rocks near the edge of the falls, trying to frame the perfect shot.
10:15She held her phone up, probably checking her angles, making sure the lighting was just right.
10:20Her friends watched as she positioned herself for what would become her final photo.
10:26She lost her balance on the slippery rocks and fell.
10:29It wasn't a huge drop, only about 16 feet or 5 meters, but it was enough.
10:35She hit the rocks on the way down and landed in the water below.
10:40The impact to her head was severe, and she was knocked unconscious immediately.
10:45Her friends scrambled to get to her and called for help.
10:49Rescuers arrived, pulled her from the water, and performed CPR.
10:54They rushed her to the hospital, but it was too late.
10:57She was pronounced dead.
10:59The cause of death was a combination of the severe head trauma and drowning.
11:04The tragic part?
11:05She was the third person to die taking a selfie at that exact same location.
11:13A 16-foot fall, a slip on a wet rock, and it was all over.
11:18For a selfie.
11:20The Cement Head Challenge.
11:22Okay, for this last one, we're not talking about a death, but a near-death experience
11:27so monumentally idiotic it deserves a spot on this list.
11:32Enter Jay Swingler, one half of the UK YouTube channel TGF Bro.
11:37These guys are famous for their reckless and often dangerous pranks.
11:42On December 7th, 2017, Jay decided to take things to a whole new level of stupid.
11:48His plan?
11:49To put his head in a microwave and fill it with polyfilla, which is a type of cement.
11:55They protected his head with a plastic bag and gave him a breathing tube.
11:59Then, they mixed seven bags of the cement and poured it into the microwave, completely encasing his head.
12:06The problem is, the cement expanded as it dried, and it crushed the breathing tube.
12:12Suddenly, Jay couldn't breathe.
12:14His friends tried for an hour and a half to free him, but the cement was rock solid.
12:20Panic set in.
12:21They had to call the fire brigade.
12:22The emergency services showed up, and they were not amused.
12:27The commander of the fire crew later said,
12:29As funny as this sounds, this young man could quite easily have suffocated or been seriously injured.
12:35It took the firefighters another hour of carefully using power tools to chisel the microwave and the cement away from
12:41his head.
12:42They had to be incredibly precise to avoid hitting him with their equipment.
12:46In the end, they got him out.
12:48He was shaken, but alive.
12:50The West Midlands Fire Service later tweeted,
12:53We're seriously unimpressed.
12:56Five of our firefighters were tied up for an hour this afternoon,
12:59freeing a YouTube prankster whose head had been cemented inside a microwave oven.
13:04The stunt cost the fire service over £650 to respond to.
13:10Jay later apologized, but the video, of course, went viral.
13:14It's a perfect example of how the quest for clicks can lead to situations that are not just dumb,
13:20but a dangerous waste of time and resources for everyone involved.
13:24He literally cemented his own head in a microwave.
13:28For a laugh.
13:29Just let that sink in.
13:57We'll see you next time.
13:59We'll see you next time.
