00:03all good things must come to an end and that even means planet earth of course that's not expected
00:08for another 7.59 billion years when the sun expands into our orbit but now experts say we
00:14might get a little preview of what that whole situation might look like all by observing some
00:18nearby exoplanets that are going through that very thing as we speak the planets are situated
00:24only 57 light years away with a central star that is nearly the same size and luminosity of ours
00:29but around twice the age which experts say it's about to enter its red giant phase or when the
00:35star runs out of fuel and begins to die this results in the outer plasma shell of the star
00:39superheating and creating a fusion reaction causing it to expand out into the system and while it
00:45becomes cooler as it does so its expanded surface area consumes anything nearby before it eventually
00:50goes supernova experts say that some planets could survive the expansion into a red giant phase but
00:56they need to be larger than jupiter or the largest planet in our solar system they might also survive
01:00if they're pushed further away from the star by a mean motion resonance but experts don't really know
01:05how that might play out or what precursors would be necessary still we're going to have plenty of time
01:10to conduct those very observations as experts say the star won't fully consume its planets for another
01:151 to 1.5 billion years
