As The Beaches make their way across the country, opening for Louis Tomlinson, the band took a moment to stop by the Hard Rock Hotel New York for a talk with Mike Adam, breaking down how that 'Off Campus' shout out came together, and discussing life on the road.

00:38off campus the name drop i mean how does that come about i i imagine they have to ask you

00:45approval or what what happened yeah we we got the sync we approved it obviously but we didn't know
00:50what the context of our song was going to be like in the show until we watched the episode so
00:54we found
00:55out with the rest of the world it's not like subtle it's like no in there it's in there and
00:59it's like during a pretty pivotal scene like when they're sort of discovering that they have feelings
01:03for each other so as like the audience that's watching is starting to really care about the
01:07characters then all of a sudden like they name drop us yeah it's really important product placement
01:14for real so was somebody like a higher up like a fan of the band or how did that come
01:20about
01:20yeah i think the creator is like quite a big fan of the band i mean like she knew a
01:25bunch of our songs
01:26and i think listens to us on repeat and they filmed the show in canada too so a lot of
01:30the
01:30like the crew who like filmed the show obviously have heard of us and uh yeah it just it was
01:35so crazy
01:36that that came to be and also so crazy that it took off in the way that it did for
01:40sure for sure
01:40what's the coolest thing that you think has directly come from that the streams

01:51i have my spotify for artists i look at the the graphs and uh compare it to blame brett and
01:59i like
01:59to do that every morning so it's very exciting and also like the fan engagement has been so wild
02:04like so many new people have discovered our music especially in like south america where we haven't
02:09really like had like much of a response before is now like blowing up over there so we're so excited
02:15that people are finally like discovering our band who haven't heard of us yeah apparently a lot of
02:19people are saying that i look like britney spears from all the tiktoks that have gone
02:23that's wonderful yeah love that very good love the comparison um can you guys remember the the first
02:30song you learned on on drums or guitar yeah it was uh happy birthday and back in
02:38black by acdc okay yeah very eclectic yeah i put them together i did a mashup for my dad's birthday
02:45yes mine was ooblady ooblada by the beatles or yellow submarine both of those so good it was yankee doodle
02:54and then um smoke on the water did you mash them up as well or no i may have and

03:01it's like that order so yeah yeah oh that's good that's good do you guys ever um hit the stage
03:08while you're mad at one another or do you go by the uh you know phrase like don't go to
03:13bed angry
03:14oh okay okay we definitely have does it make for a better show and you're like ah i gotta get

03:20aggression honestly you forget that you're mad at them as soon as you get on stage and then everything
03:25is always fine it like whatever like small argument that felt like the biggest thing in the world
03:29literally disappears when you're on there it's crazy it is crazy like you'll be i'll be so mad
03:34at one of them and then like we'll have like a little smile on stage because you're performing
03:38together and it's such it's such a good time and you forget like why you were upset right right it's
03:43probably me and jordan i'll like avoid her for a couple songs and then i'm like okay let me come
03:47let me give you a kiss i do love you yes okay um can you recall like the biggest um
03:54creative
03:55difference you've ever had up to this point maybe there was a song somebody didn't like
03:59you didn't want it included on a project or i mean we're always kind of on the same page we're
04:04really lucky that we do kind of all feel the same about like the music and the branding um definitely
04:11with like different like men in the past who we've worked with there's been like a little bit of
04:16disagreements but i think yeah i mean whenever we are putting together a record it's always like
04:21you've got like 60 songs that you narrow down to 30 and then of that 30 you make the the
04:26record and
04:27we we try to make it a really democratic and fair process we have the great great debate that's what
04:32i was going to say it's great um and so we debate the songs yeah we debate the songs and
04:40most most of
04:41the time like seven or eight of the songs we're all completely we we're all on the same page yeah

04:45know they're going to make the record but then there's like three that we each like kind of
04:51disagree on and you have to defend your argument like and if you don't prepare for the great
04:55debate then your yeah your songs aren't going to make the record yeah ever allow for like one
05:00outside voice to uh you know our manager yeah she's part of the great debate she helped us write the
05:06song the great debate so she gets to say yeah uh has a fan ever come to you and told
05:14you their
05:14interpretation of a song and and what it meant to them and it was like the furthest thing from what
05:20the song that actually happens all the time oh really yeah okay break it down it's interesting
05:25because like two records ago during like the the record that edge of the earth is on blame my ex
05:30it's like very much about like my experience with my breakup was a pretty bad one i get a lot
05:35of like
05:35divorce moms coming up to me and being like this helped me yeah yeah get through my divorce a lot
05:40thank you you young person thank you so much and he and like and they're like i'm gonna be a
05:46single
05:46mother now but your songs are helping me get through and i'm like cool it's like how i feel
05:51about olivia rodrigo yes i understand i'm like ah you're angst i totally relate yes meanwhile i get
05:56married women married to men who will leave their husband and children for me yeah yeah yeah and
06:02and the queer songs we write so very cool i'm not ready to be a stepmom yeah
06:10uh on the the road to success for a band what do you think is more important establishing like a
06:18signature sound that your fans can rely on and and fall in love with or do you think it's um
06:24experimenting pushing the boundaries and and reinventing yourself constantly good question
06:29i think you can you need to kind of do you need to experiment in order to find your signature

06:55what we liked and what we didn't like and that was like a really fundamental that's a fundamental
07:02reason we are the band that we are today yeah yeah i love that you've you've toured with so many
07:07amazing people i mean it's so cool the rolling stones foo fighters i mean i just love it obviously
07:13you're out with louis now so great um just from watching these people in action and maybe interacting
07:19with them i mean what what's the takeaway what's the biggest thing you've learned i think um i i guess
07:25like at the level of professionalism that i think a lot of these um artists have act and like you
07:30know when they when they come down to like introduce themselves and meet us like the way that they
07:34interact with their crew and with people that work for them like um the people that you know like the
07:40rolling stones and the foo fighters they they all just treat uh everybody they work with like with such
07:45respect and i think like that's a really big takeaway you know as an up-and-coming artist like never
07:51to
07:51like let you you know you go get too big and um to you know treat people with dignity and
07:58um and grace and
07:59yeah i've definitely learned that from all those artists yeah be gracious because these are people
08:04that have been rocking with them on tour for like decades now so we're sure and you know it's like
08:09tired and grumpy is like we can get and like whenever the workload gets too much like you always
08:14have to remember like there's people that are working for you to help put your show on and like
08:18help you out so you should always like you should never take out your frustrations on the people that
08:24you're working with you know yeah i just want to build up everyone around us yeah because if right
08:28if mick jagger can shout us out on stage or elton john can like facetime us then if they have
08:33the time
08:33to do that then we can we can do that same see the same thing which is what like elton

08:40i talk about this with everyone all the time because he has a direct uh you know relationship with
08:47every artist i interview and i'm like how does this man do he's cloned himself or something
08:52that's a good theory absolutely he has cloned it i mean he's got the money to do it so i'm
08:57sure
08:57that's what what happened so um with some of these artists some of your idols is there like a direct
09:02piece of advice that um you know somebody's given you about your your music specifically yeah um we are
09:10the first record that we ever put out we did it with this band called metric um they're a canadian
09:15band but i think they've had a pretty big career here too um emily haynes the the woman who
09:22produced the record with us um she gave us this piece of advice that i think i really go back
09:27to
09:27a lot which is if something isn't sitting right with you like if a song isn't sitting right with you
09:33and um your label or a producer is trying to push you to put it out like you should always
09:40trust your
09:40gut because at the end of the day it's like your name that's attached to it um whether it's like
09:46a
09:46photo shoot or an outfit or a song or a music video like you're the one who has to put
09:51your name on that
09:52and you're the one that's gonna have to play it for 50 years so trust your gut or look at
09:56that
09:56photo for a gazillion years and you're like i i didn't feel comfortable at all doing that that is
10:01wonderful yeah yeah yeah and it was like especially prescient like hearing that from a woman yeah yeah
10:06because i think women can be such people pleasers but uh it was really good advice yeah i love that
10:11before we wrap um would you give me two pop artists that you think could easily cross over into the
10:19the
10:19grunge or punk rock genre because i have two names that i was thinking about but i want to get

10:25take first i would say olivia rodrigo yeah that was one yeah and then i got one other one i

10:32chapel too yeah did you ever hear the um cover she did a barracuda yes it's like i know it's

10:40favorite cover of all time god i haven't heard it i think she's only done it live i don't think
