00:00Well, it's interesting that he picked me for such an old guy.
00:05That was the main quality, I think.
00:08Gentlemen, what a bloody movie.
00:10These are the movies that make me want to do what I do.
00:12These are the most of the movies that make you guys want to do what you do.
00:16I sat there in the middle of the IMAX and it just floods into your eyes and brain.
00:22Let's talk about your characters, really.
00:24In a way, we know you from so many great comedies and war movies over the years.
00:31You could argue that you're playing against type in some respects.
00:35But it kind of leans, I think, both your characters into this incredible human quality I think you both have
00:41as actors.
00:42And I wondered what it feels like for you both to be recognized by someone like Christopher Nolan for those
00:49qualities.
00:51Well, it's interesting that he picked me for such an old guy.
00:56That was the main quality, I think.
00:58I was like, such an old geezer.
01:02But I don't know.
01:04I mean, to put me as the most loyal character in Western literature, I mean, it's such a huge compliment.
01:10I mean, all I have to do is try not to f*** it up, you know?
01:14Can you say that? I'm sorry. I forgot.
01:16It's fine. I can cut it out if people have a problem with it.
01:19But, like, I kind of felt like, John, you were really at the peak of your powers in this movie.
01:25I agree.
01:25It felt like it was a culmination of every film I've ever seen you in, from, like, dramatic roles to,
01:32like, it's just everything.
01:34I was not so much taken aback, because I think you're a great actor, but I was like, he has
01:39really brought every one of his tools to work.
01:41I did. I feel like I had to live up to it, like Emesh and I were talking about, that
01:47Chris's beautiful environment, that you're so safe as an actor, and he stands behind the camera.
01:53He doesn't go to Video Village. He's right there with you, looking at you, that you feel like you're communicating
01:59with him in some ways.
02:00So I felt like I had to be as vulnerable and as present as I could for this beautiful movie.
02:08Like, you want to make this movie rock, and you don't want to be the downfall.
02:13Emesh, I think for you and for Matt, this film really was an odyssey.
02:20I've been watching kind of the featurettes of just how this movie was made in six different countries and all
02:25these incredible and difficult locations and practical effects.
02:29What was the kind of, what were some of the most difficult moments for you in that, the standout moments
02:34where you're out on the sea, you're on that beach, and you're like, this is, this is for real, real?
02:39Oh, there were so many. There were so many. I mean, you know, being in the, in the cave for
02:44the cyclops sequence, it was an actual cave at the top of a mountain in Greece.
02:49That was a thrill. You know, being on the beach in Scotland, where we shot the last Dragonian sequence, and
02:56there was a point at which, you know, we were all in the water, we're all just sopping wet, and
03:01there's a, a helicopter with an IMAX camera just sort of buzzing almost, almost too low.
03:08But just the right, sort of, you know, all these moments that we just kind of had to look at
03:15each other and laugh and go, this is, we're making a movie here.
03:18You know, this is, this is that kid in you that wants to be an actor in the movies that
03:22you're like, this is, this is what I wanted.
03:24This is what I wanted to be a part of. So it's, it's, it's a real thrill.
03:27Was there ever a time you were yearning for a green screen? Oh, were you like, this is cinema, guys?
03:32No, not once. I mean, I loved it. You know, there was a point where we were at the cave
03:36for the cyclone sequence, I looked out, and the boat that we're on, they'd, they'd, they'd come round and they'd
03:42moored themselves, you know, where we would be moored.
03:45You know, anyone else would have gone, we'll, we'll add that in post. But Chris was like, I need them
03:50there. We're not going to add it in post. Like, I need them there in reality, you know, because that,
03:55he knows how much that helps us.
03:57You know, we don't have to imagine anything. So it never yearned for a green screen because we as actors
04:03want to see and feel everything.
04:05Because it's much easier when you have the real thing. It's easier to act than when you do green screen
04:09stuff. You have to try to imagine and pretend and find eyelines that are real.
04:14Now you can just be there present, you know.
