01:03part of business but it's uh i get to cover it quickly i had never been to a nba game

01:10i had never met an nba player uh john sally met me took me into the pistons locker room
01:20many times allowed me to come to the games when his family had never been to a game never sat

02:42me a check for this i wanted to give back to this because i'm officially moving back to detroit
02:46when uh i've kind of already have my daughter came there to help my my mother-in-law byron's

03:24times i don't know if john remember i used to come to his house he used to throw these really
03:27cool parties and i used to hang out with his brother jerry we used to do a lot of things

03:37be jerry jerry jerry that's right so jerry and i used to do a lot of stuff
03:44i love jerry yeah and so yeah that's it yeah so with with light of live noise it's all about

03:55expanding what's happening into the name of from an economic uh impact standpoint you've been a
04:00mainstay there yes and so when i talk with john john said he wanted to speak to uh both physical
04:08and
04:08financial health in the black community i thought that was brilliant yeah and so oftentimes we don't
04:12married too and you got to have good health if you want to have great finances yes and so and
04:18almost vice versa so uh i thought that was kind of a great lead in for what we're doing uh
04:23we have a
04:23litany of things happening on the street we got a d9 the whole fraternity sorority role going to be on
04:28the street showing people what they actually do in the community along that people uh that are running
04:32candidates role uh we got a live podcast that's going to take place we got a fashion vignette seven
04:39happen seven fashion shows simultaneously four times a day is going to be happening
04:43uh rufus people are saying when when when tomorrow as in uh july 11th and uh we usually do the
04:50first
04:50saturday of every uh july right this year we we pushed to the second saturday because the fourth
04:55fell on the first saturday the facebook um posts are still running from last year yes you you you
05:04noticed do you see that and so amazon is our five-year partner got to give up to amazon this
05:09wouldn't happen and amazon moved into the neighborhood and built that i think it's like
05:13four or five hundred million dollar distribution center and so a friend of mine i was like well we
05:18got to do something you guys got to deposit some money on live noise we got to do this and
05:21so they've
05:22been our partner for five years you know we're just looking to expand our partnership and it's all
05:26about economic activity the expansion of uh black-owned business and what people don't realize
05:31live noise is one of the highest concentration of black-owned business on one street in america
05:35that's amazing and we got to be able to say that and it goes down for miles people don't know
05:39you
05:39can take live noise eight miles down to the river i didn't know that that's how long i didn't either
05:43it goes already down to the bridge the new bridge really you know when i went i i go there
05:48because
05:49the trap vegan there's a great vegan restaurant there called trap vegan yeah i'm familiar oh yeah
05:54don't worry i'm gonna have you uh that's good better uh because you you had me go to the to
06:00the
06:00to the place on woodward yeah for years the arm yeah cafe yeah oh oh yeah that's where i got
06:07that from
06:08yeah yeah i got them in there yet they had some salmon in there lord had well it gets gone
06:15but we love
06:15that restaurant like i said if i was rich i'd hire whoever that chef was okay no so so so

06:24let me say this you you mentioned uh you went to john's house for a party this this particular day
06:32made me an urban legend around the world now sal would tell me come to the house because he was
06:40always like what are you eating what do you eat he said come and let the chef cook for you

06:44because it's all what the state says you come every day you just sign the book and come so i
06:49would do
06:49that so one day i come i uh and he said i ain't gotta be there so so i knew
06:55sabrina and jerry yeah
06:56and and and and right so yeah so i'm good so i went to the house one day and i'm
07:03having my lunch
07:04and i walked around i was in the living room i was looking out the window and i looked in
07:10a corner
07:11and i saw this girl and i said hello and she was standing in the corner when she turned around
07:18she went hi i might yell are you you are not janet jackson are you janet freaking jackson
07:30yes
07:31i'm like what are you what are you doing
07:34sally knows everybody the way he's putting it is that i put baby in the corner i didn't put baby
07:41in the corner i know you did that no you did that robert she came to visit is three is
07:473 20 in the
07:49afternoon i just walked in the house to look out the window in the corner is a girl who looks
07:56like
07:56janet jackson and damn if it wasn't oh my god so she was trying to get away from trying to
08:04get
08:04away from mason that's why she was in the corner he cornered her she probably heard me having lunch
08:11and stuff and heard that i was walking in the room she probably said oh my god it was the
08:17most
08:18unbelievable one one of the most unbelievable days i had in the house there were many
08:25yeah i just told him my mother would go to field service with katherine my mother was jehovah
08:30witness yes i was in field service with katherine jackson she knew how much i was a michael jackson
08:35fan wouldn't tell me i had to find out i said why are you doing because i didn't want to
08:40tell you
08:40because then you're gonna try to go meet michael you ain't gonna come to the kingdom hall i was like
08:45i ain't coming to the kingdom hall i want to meet michael i got conversation from michael that is funny
08:51but yes that's that's how beautiful was sabrina made sure that i understood how to get to the arena
08:58get in the sea it was a beautiful family experience the one thing i remember about john
09:05that he told me about his mom and i tell people all the time around the world i tell him

09:15he he told me his mother told him to never bend down yeah to always stand erect just because you're
09:26tall don't do it and and so i would watch john and he would do that right yeah i'm gonna

09:32i'm gonna bow to get in but i'm gonna stand straight and i i don't want to be round-shouldered

09:39kids in the street tall kids first thing i do is push they shoulders back i was like yo you

09:45want to they short that's you know that that's a handicap stand up straight he he's speaking of
09:52helping people um get jobs and uh reintegrate themselves in a different way in a new way in
10:00in the work society and he knew i was just really getting going in radio so he wanted me to
10:07have an
10:08understanding of how corporations work with people like me so he has me in the locker room
10:15and a guy from the pistons administration comes up and he goes he looks at me because uh excuse me

10:22have to he goes john i wanted some things to go over with your contract he says so he's got
10:28to go he
10:29said no whatever you gotta say to me you say it you can say it in front of him
10:36it was matt dobeck and he looked at me and said well who who is this he thought he must
10:43have been
10:43a family member he gonna let me hear that that's why i'm the new voice i'm the new voice and
10:50don't
10:50know it yet because and then he took me to a troubled dennis rodman in the locker room because
10:57dennis said no he can't be in here john
11:02i'm serious moliously told dennis rodman whenever i he see me he's allowed in here and if you don't
11:09see me he can come in here and it was the way john told him so dennis became closer and
11:16because
11:16sally formed that the pistons threw a knight at the palace for dennis sold it out because they
11:25were gonna do this thing for dennis and so dennis was by the tunnel and he went makes i'm leaving
11:31i'm like oh dennis you go these white people would lose their faith in my you can't i said dennis
11:37you gotta stay i said d i said just stay for just a few minutes let them let them do
11:42that little
11:43and then you can just walk out and go through the tunnel i'm gonna try but because john sally
11:49did that those many years ago uh they would have ruined it would have been he was gone
11:56yeah he was gone he was like that and he only trusted who he trusted john told me that when
12:02he introduced them to me and thank you for that and for that reason the pistons thought i had juice
12:10because he wouldn't go and they saw me because they were trying to follow him yeah i'm like he'll
12:16stay i said he's good he's just he's just gonna wait right here yeah yeah yeah he does not deal
12:21with the pistons like dennis is a chicago bull if you ask him yes is that right yes seriously like
12:28he he got so upset when they traded me and they yeah and they fired chuck daly and he was
12:36like i
12:37thought we were family and this and that and all that thing and he even when they retired his
12:41number like he like you said he was here for a second he was a flash of the pan and
12:47he was up out
12:48of this uh old and uh well his daughter he got a young girl so he he getting young every
12:55day
12:55he getting young every day his daughter his daughter is a soccer champion yeah wow uh on the
13:02international level oh wow so that that that's helped him some sally you've got four nba titles
13:09yeah uh i have two of my first my favorite was my first one you know like a kid and
13:17but then the
13:17last one is the kid you spend the most time with that's my laker championship and uh but you know
13:23it's so funny this is what i tell people it's so rufus i tell people make sure you come out

13:29light up livin noise tomorrow from 10 until 7 tomorrow you see all this stuff makes joy everybody
13:34you know between seven mile and nine mile and eight mile yeah correct eight and six between eight
13:39and six eight six miles just making sure we get that through but uh and my daughter who doesn't
13:46know i'm in town and she's she'll figure it out yes um i i just the the most important thing
13:53is i
13:53worked for ibm and i worked in the detroit office the chicago office the los angeles office the miami
14:00office and toronto office my mentality so take the mba as ibm and all those different offices i work
14:08you work but everybody else is like man what's your favorite team i said the ones that paid
14:13all right my general my general manager is from the east coast uh and so he had he has a
14:25a dynamic
14:26hate for for lamb beer and our crew um too bad for him you want you once told me uh
14:35he said it doesn't
14:36matter they don't have to sell one ticket just provide a gym or floor and we'll play the celtics
14:44oh yeah i play the celtics now don't you really i will play the celtics if it would would i
14:51got i
14:51got my stem cells in my knees i got my feet operated on i'd still play the celtics i would
14:57i would just
14:58that was quite the rivalry yeah yeah yeah i loved it let me tell you i watch uh mike abden

15:05up he sent me a video of when we were playing and i'm blocking shots and i i don't remember
15:12any of the games this is another thing i don't remember any of my nba life i remember things i
15:18did
15:19outside of it but games i was in such a trance and so locked in that every game was a
15:25it felt like a
15:26stressful game so i don't know well remember that game against chicago or that game i don't i just
15:32remember uh going to the barber shop on livenoy and six mile and i walk in i ain't cutting your
15:38hair today where you played last night i was like oh man and i would go in just just to
15:45hear it just
15:46to hear somebody hating on me i'm like oh okay and then i would turn around and play better the
15:52next day
15:53but yeah i would say these two things i'm gonna take a break in a second but i'm gonna say
15:57these two
15:57things um rufus and even maybe sally didn't even know this um but spike lee hated me because
16:09because john sally was his biggest threat in life yeah why and he had already made because sally could do
16:18everything he was doing and he thought sally was going to take his little throne from him and he
16:26he stayed in my house too he interviewed malcolm x's brothers and sisters
16:30he was you know what yeah i still see him he called me long he said hey hey long tall
16:38he called you after they won the championship no i i said something because i picked the knicks in november
16:44last year on a radio tf on podcast tfu wow tfu podcast and they were thinking i was you know
16:52uh dementia got to you early right and i go we'll see i said matter of fact just have me
16:57back on
16:58in may june and then i went back on in june and they were like we want to apologize wow
17:03but i also what
17:05they thought when i said 2004 i said oh the pistons are going to win this and they were like
17:09have you
17:10seen the laker team i was like oh yeah that's why i know yeah i remember is spike gonna get
17:17a ring
17:17yeah spike's gonna get a ring you know and spent three million dollars for that ticket all these
17:22years all right hold up guys don't go anywhere no we gotta go we got we got we got we

17:26station to go to okay well damn it huh yeah rufus so like the time again 12 noon to 8p

17:36bring the whole family and friends out we got a lot of things happening so on livernois on livernois

17:48black owned companies called software livernois which is high society which is a really cool
17:53bar and of course uh soul on ice which is another really cool bar just soul on ice yeah that's

17:5815 20 black owned bar restaurants on livernois street you you are the beacon of that that light stays
18:04on as long as you stay there absolutely so i appreciate that get me a check because all this
18:09philanthropic was to put me in the courthouse and sal thanks for leaving uh ronnie in detroit uh angie
18:18had never met anybody with a new york personality like that and she kept saying how do you know this

18:24and he would he would challenge her to be better every single time and and uh so tell tell ronnie
18:34when you talk to him that that you came and we talked about him yeah we miss him he go

18:38stay and i said shy nola he was like really i don't know enough room for you there i can't
18:46get you a room

18:59detroit two championships to detroit and here's something no one knows but when you go back in
19:05the films you'll look at it the movie this is the last thing okay the movie black panther the um
19:14physical signal that they use yeah the crossing of the arms that came from john south and dennis
19:19robin yeah we used to do that yeah right yeah we'll call the x factor yes why did they kill
