00:00Good morning. What's up, Mason? Coco, Angie, starting the house. We haven't seen you since
00:07you've been appointed. We didn't see you when you was interim or nothing because you were busy
00:12and so we want to say congratulations to you. Thank you. Thank you. That means so much. Thank
00:17you, Mason. Because you used to come and show up for the Detroit Police Department all the time.
00:22Whatever was happening, you were here to help promote it. So we appreciate that. But the
00:27congratulations is genuine and far overdue and those are big shoes and you're in them and you've
00:34been working. Ready, well prepared, love the city of Detroit and it's just amazing having just the
00:41support of the mayor, city council, my board of police commissioners, the men and women of DPD
00:47in the community. I did a walk a mile yesterday and I was out by Dove Elementary School over on
00:53the northeast side and it was about 500 people came out to walk with me yesterday.
00:58Wow. Really? That's beautiful. I had free food. I had a DJ. I had a marching. You had a block
01:03party.
01:04I had a move in walking block party in the hood. That's good. That's always good. Because that's
01:10what's needed. People need to know that there's a human side to law enforcement. Yes. And to just
01:17know that makes them feel a lot better about responding and to what happens to them and what
01:25happens around them. So congratulations on that. There's more. There's more though. There's more
01:31than what's happening Saturday. Oh my God. Saturday. Saturday. When I saw this, I was like, oh, we got to
01:39get him in to talk about this. This is what Angie likes to do. Go ahead. Yeah. When my wife
01:43saw the
01:43the flyer, she was like, there's a fake flyer floating around talking about you're taking some
01:48kids fishing. Wow. Yes. She didn't believe it. She was like, what you know about fishing chief?
01:56But guess what? I do know how to fish. And I'm about to show some amazing young people and introduce
02:01them to the sport of angling. And so partnering with Mr. Dorsey here, we got free fishing poles and
02:10we're going to be over at Riverside Park. Uh, what time we start? Nine o'clock, nine to one,
02:15nine to one. And Mr. Dorsey, introduce yourself to, to the public, uh, and, and what you do.
02:21Yes. I'm Anthony Dorsey from keep the school safe. Uh, we are a nonprofit here in Detroit. Uh,
02:26we've been doing this for 15 years in the Detroit area and about 11 years throughout the country. Uh,
02:32we go all over and speak. We have a school tour that's likened to the blue pigs. And, uh,
02:38we actually had the chief come on a few months ago. Yeah. Man, we got a video of the chief
02:44dancing.
02:45He was out there jitting. He said jigging. He said jigging. He said jigging. He said jigging.
02:51At King High School. Lord. Wait a minute. You said the blue pigs. I grew up on the blue pigs.
02:56So
02:56come on. Talk to me about this. And this is how all it started. Cause we had a conversation. I've,
03:00I've known, uh, chief medicine for a little over 20 years. Yes, sir. And, um,
03:04um, we had a conversation in his office about how to deal with the youth and
03:08different things in the community. And we started talking about, uh,
03:11fishing and, uh, we attempted to do it last year and we had an incident where we
03:16had to stop, um, with a four year old. So we, we postponed it until this year.
03:21And, um, we came, we revisited, came back and had the discussion.
03:25And the chief was like, I think this is going to be, uh, a hit. And, um,
03:30it's been a hit ever since we, we sat down and had the discussion to put the flyer back out.
03:35Well, I gotta tell you, um, my dad turned me on to fishing at a young age. And my first
03:41fishing trip,
03:42I caught the biggest fish. I caught a carp. And from then on in life, I kind of used
03:48fishing as one of my guides. Cause you know, one pole out there versus two or three, three poles,
03:53you have a better chance of getting what you want versus just, you know, so I kind of use that
03:58in life. So I really, really appreciate the fact that you guys are doing, is there like an age
04:03limit? No. Open. What are the ages? Who can participate? Everyone. Um, we, we are, our ideal.
04:10Yeah, yeah, definitely. Our ideal. Can you put a worm on the hook? Yeah.
04:17Our ideal is to bridge the gap between the youth of the community and the chief and the police
04:23department. Okay. Um, because as I stated to the chief and I'm gonna, I'm gonna say it to how
04:29it was put to me, um, the police are their ops. So when you look at it and that, that
04:35aspect,
04:35it's like, how are they, how are they your, your ops? And a lot of them can't describe it. Right.
04:41So that was one of the conversations that, um, the chief and I had. And, um, I said, well,
04:45we gotta do something to get the attention of the youth. And then this is a good way. So I
04:50said,
04:50I'm gonna come up with a way to get the fishing rods and get the food. And we've been blessed
04:55to
04:55have a lot of donations that came in from local businesses. So, so, so I got a mom saying,
05:03Oh, how do I get my kid there? What do they have to do? How much is it? And what
05:08goes on?
05:09It's free. Yep. Free, free and show up, short, bring your kid, you know, and, um, I got
05:16volunteer mentors, adults that'll be there as well. That's going to be participating.
05:20And it's going to be a good time. And the best thing about it, guess what?
05:24The walleye and the bass are running. Yes.
05:28So because it's not fun and, and perch because it's not fun, you know,
05:32you out there all day and don't catch nothing. So it should be very exciting tomorrow.
05:36And so, um, um, um,
05:39the parents should be ready with the hot grease to be able to cook because,
05:45um, their, their sons, their daughters, the kids.
05:48Coming home with some fish.
05:50Coming home with fish.
05:51I love it.
05:52Yes.
05:52I love it.
05:53I like all of that.
05:54Bring the fish home, bring, uh, all the good stuff home.
05:58Um, and it gets the young people together.
06:00Um, me and, uh, Mr. Dorsey, you know, that's my brother.
06:04We go way back.
06:05We talked about this before.
06:06We talked about this last year.
06:07Yes.
06:08We talked about this last year, the Juneteenth event.
06:10And the thing about it,
06:12a lot of our babies won't experience fishing if somebody doesn't take them.
06:17That's right.
06:17Yeah.
06:17So it, it covers a lot.
06:19It covers your relationship with, with law enforcement.
06:22It covers your relationship with the community.
06:25And it covers a relationship of getting over fear and apprehension of being out in the water
06:32or near the water to fish.
06:34Mm-hmm.
06:34So you get to bait a hook.
06:36Young ladies, I want y'all young ladies to show up too.
06:38The princesses show up.
06:39So you learn how to bait a hook, put a minnow on there, put a worm on the hook, how
06:43to cast
06:44and all that stuff like that.
06:45So show up.
06:47Parents, bring your children.
06:49I know, I know y'all talking about y'all ain't fish since y'all was a kid.
06:52Tapping to your inner childhood.
06:54But they don't have to because the Detroit police will be out there to do it.
06:58Yes, yes.
06:58Along with Mr. Dorsey.
07:00Uh, this, this will be good.
07:02Again, Chief, reiterate the time and place.
07:05It's going to be Riverside Park and the time is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
07:11The foot of the river.
07:12We used to call it the foot of the river.
07:13Tomorrow, Saturday.
07:14Yep.
07:14This is going to be great.
07:15It's going to be a Saturday.
07:16Yes, yes.
07:17And it actually has an address.
07:18It's, uh, 3085 West Jefferson.
07:21Shut your mouth.
07:22You better hush.
07:23I just found it out.
07:24Down the street from the Crest Motel.
07:25Around that corner right there.
07:26Y'all know where it is.
07:26She went way back.
07:28You can see both of the bridges.
07:30You can see the Ambassador Bridge and the Gordie House Bridge right there.
07:32We want to say thank you to both of you for coming in.
07:36Chief, we know it's hard to squeeze the 20 seconds from you, but thanks for stopping.
07:40But more than that, thanks for what's about to happen tomorrow at 9 in the morning.
07:45That is going to be, that is going to be spectacular.
07:47It will be something, uh, young people will never forget because they don't get the opportunity
07:54to do it.
07:55And, and, and to do it knowing that they don't know, so they don't have to come saying, you
08:00know, I'll be embarrassed.
08:01All the kids pretty much won't know.
08:04So they'll get a chance to do it.
08:05And we got the polls and everything.
08:07That's excellent.
08:08Just show up.
08:09Show up.
08:10That's great.
08:11That's good.
08:11Mr. Dorsey, you know, you look like, um, the guy that used to run Motown.
08:17No, no, no, no, no.
08:20He also ran Uptown Records.
08:22Andre Harrell.
08:23Andre Harrell.
08:24Actually, I'm, I was friends with Andre Harrell.
08:26No kidding.
08:27Yeah.
08:28Yeah.
08:28For many, many years.
08:29Did people say that?
08:31That you guys look like brothers?
08:32That was one of my mentors when I was, uh, 15, 16 years old.
08:35Yeah.
08:36To tell the story real quick.
08:38Um, I met, um, Andre through, um, Christopher Williams.
08:43And, um.
08:43Who Chief Bettison looks like.
08:46Cause, don't wake me.
08:49I'm dreaming.
08:50Don't let me call him on the phone.
08:51Oh, sorry.
08:51And, uh.
08:52He had all the girls back in the day, too.
08:53Yeah, yeah.
08:54It was a him.
08:55So, uh, from there, it just became a friendship.
08:58And then, you know, just start learning different things.
09:02And then I decided that wasn't the avenue I wanted to take.
09:05I wanted to do something simple.
09:07So.
09:07Wow.
09:07Yeah.
09:08That, that's a beautiful story at all.
09:11Thank you both.
09:13And thanks for what you do for the city of Detroit.
09:15Yeah.
09:15I just wanna, cause, you know, I, I report news on our morning show.
09:20So, I watch you a lot on Facebook.
09:23And I'm speaking to you, Chief.
09:24I just wanna say thank you just for being transparent, being real.
09:28And you, you're always, like you're all, like you said, you're always working.
09:32But I, I feel your heart.
09:33And that means a lot to people.
09:35So, just, just a simple thank you.
09:37Thank you, Ms. Angie Starr.
09:38All right, yes.
09:39Yes.
09:39Yes.
09:40Mason, Coco, thanks.
09:41Yes.
09:41The King High School graduate.
09:43By the way.
09:44Uh-oh.
09:46Thanks, guys.
09:48Appreciate y'all.
09:48All right.
