00:00For years, Liverpool Street Scene Services Limited, known as LSSL, has been responsible for keeping the city clean, maintaining parks and collecting bins.
00:10Now, those services are officially back under direct council control.
00:15We've been on the streets of Liverpool to get your take on the move.
00:18We'll have to see what we... time will tell. That's the only way I can answer that one.
00:23The councils need to invest, not just the street cleaning, they need to invest in the homeless.
00:27No one can say, well, we thought you were doing it and they thought we were doing it.
00:32And we thought my auntie would come out with the brush and got rid of it.
00:35The council says the move will give it more flexibility and oversight to make improvements across key environmental services
00:42while keeping the same familiar teams working in communities each and every day.
00:47Around 700 staff from LSSL have now transferred to the authority as part of the change.
00:53I'm disappointed because when the tourists come here, you see all the bins full up, especially on the Pearhead area, you know, and around Castle Street.
01:03And there's where most of the tourists come, Matthew Street, and the bins should be empty regularly, you know.
01:08The council say they've got no money, but, you know, the council always say no to everything.
01:13We should start in the city, keep the city clean, because, you know, the way our city was a while ago, the rain has improved as what it is now.
01:24If someone came and cleaned it all up, I'd be thinking, my God, how did I put it with the way it was?
01:29So, you know, it's like someone putting a new suit on or getting their hair done and seeing the difference, like I might one day.
01:36Council leader Liam Robinson said the decision followed strong feedback from residents who told the council that cleaner streets were one of their top priorities.
01:47He said insourcing the teams who deliver those services would create new opportunities for innovation and efficiency,
01:55as well as help achieve the city's cleaner, greener ambitions.
01:58I think people want it cleaner, people want the streets clean, and, you know, people can come here to say, look, it's lovely and clean, you know.
02:06We know that people are lovely here, but the streets should be cleaner.
02:10It's very beautiful to see a beautiful city that we've got, so, you know, because Liverpool City's iconic, it's one of the best in the world, they're the best in the world.
02:20If it's clean, you do feel better, because even though you might not notice it or be aware of it, in the back of your mind, you're thinking, this is terrible.
02:28Councillor Robinson also praised the commitment of staff, describing them as exceptional, and saying that bringing them in-house would help develop and strengthen services in the future.
02:39The council agreed the change at a cabinet meeting last year, following a major resident survey.
02:45The results showed widespread support for greater council control over house services are delivered and improved.
02:51If it was your house, you won't, like, trash your house, so why trash your city?
02:57Because we all live here, so we live, we live out here.
