00:00Countries across Europe reported over 10,000 excess deaths during a heat wave that hit the continent late June.
00:08Recorded during the week of June 22nd to 29th, more than 9,000 of the fatalities were aged 65 and
00:15above.
00:17The data is pulled from national mortality statistics from 27 European nations and includes excess deaths from all causes, not
00:25just those related to the heat.
00:27However, scientists say there were no other known major factors that could have contributed to the spike in numbers.
00:34They say the recent heat wave has been largely driven by human-caused climate change, making it more intense and
00:40frequent.
00:41It has shut down schools, disrupted power supplies and broken temperature records in Spain, France as well as the UK.
