Extreme heat kills more people than wildfires according to Dr Clair Barnes, author of a new report from Imperial College London. The research estimates that more than 2,700 people died during the May and June heatwaves in England and Wales, highlighting the risk of climate change. Report by Johals. 00:00We know that heatwaves are one of the most dangerous forms of extreme weather that there is.
00:06It might be more obvious when people die as a result of a flood or a storm or a wildfire,
00:11but actually extreme heat kills a lot more people, especially in Europe.
00:15And what our study has found is that during the heatwaves that we experienced in May and June,
00:20there were around 2,700 excess heat-related deaths,
00:24and around 40% of those wouldn't have been expected to happen in the absence of climate change.
