00:00And more news coming in. The Supreme Court has stayed the Madras High Court order on cow slaughter.
00:06The Madras High Court to Tamil Nadu had said no cow slaughter on Bakri Eid Eve.
00:12The Supreme Court has stayed that order directing the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that no cow or calf is
00:17slaughtered in the state on the eve of Bakri Eid or any other day.
00:21Well, the Tamil Nadu government had moved the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court order but the Supreme Court
00:27has now directed or rather stayed the Madras High Court order directing the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that no
00:35cow or calf is slaughtered in the state on the eve of Bakri Eid.
00:39Basically, the Madras High Court had told the government that there should be no cow slaughter on Bakri Eid if
00:46the Supreme Court had stayed that particular order.
00:51We will get in a word, in fact, from my colleagues on why the Supreme Court has stayed the order
00:57and what has it said as far as the Madras High Court order to the Tamil Nadu government on slaughtering
01:03of, avoiding rather, slaughtering of cow or calf on the eve of Bakri Eid is concerned.
01:09Anisha Mathorezmo. Anisha, what did the APICS court say?
01:13Well, Sneha, remember this petition had been filed by the Tamil Nadu government challenging the Madras High Court order.
01:19And why? The state has said that the Madras High Court imposed a complete ban on cow slaughter in the
01:26state, even outside of the regulations that are there.
01:30Now, remember, the issue of Bakri Eid had come up before the High Court, but instead of restricting the cow
01:36slaughter in public areas on Bakri Eid, the High Court imposed a complete ban across the state.
01:43And that is why the Tamil Nadu government came to the Supreme Court saying that there cannot be a complete
01:47ban in this manner, that the law allows for regulated slaughter of animals, including cattle,
01:54that regulations could have been imposed by the High Court for the occasion of Bakri Eid and slaughter in public
02:01areas or in certain specific areas.
02:03But the law does not allow for imposing a complete ban across the state.
02:09In fact, the state had also argued in its petition that this will also affect farmers, this will also affect
02:15the leather industry, it will affect a lot of trade and commerce if such a complete ban is imposed through
02:22court orders.
02:23And that is why today, the Supreme Court has stayed the Madras High Court order.
02:29It has issued notice on the Tamil Nadu government's petition and we'll now hear the matter after six weeks.
02:35Back to you.
02:36When Anisha Mathur with the very latest on that story, the APICS Court has now stayed the order of the
02:42Madras High Court that had directed the state government to ensure that no slaughter of cow or calves takes place
02:48on the eve of Bakri Eid.
02:49That is an order that has been stayed by the Supreme Court.
02:53So, win in that sense with the Tamil Nadu government.
