00:00The Steam Machine is now available for pre-order at a starting price of $1,049.
00:06For the same amount, you could buy both a brand new Xbox Series X and a PlayStation 5
00:12and still have $50 change to snag a couple of great games too.
00:16So why exactly does Valve's new PC-Console Hybrid cost an eye-watering $1,049?
00:23Well, firstly, Valve say that their original goal for the price of Steam Machine is no longer viable
00:29due to factors like RAM shortages and the US's constantly shape-shifting tariffs.
00:34So the prices we're sharing today reflect the state of the world for manufacturing.
00:39But Valve has also stated that it doesn't align with our beliefs about how healthy ecosystems are built to subsidize
00:46the cost.
00:47They say if there's anything we're religious about at Valve,
00:51it's our belief that open systems are better in the long run for ourselves and customers.
00:56We've had games industry experts warning us for months now that console prices could pass the $1,000 mark.
01:03Well, now they're right.
01:04And inflation around the globe is also impacting everything from gas prices to a dozen eggs.
01:10But it feels like the burden of change keeps getting placed on the individual buyer or worker
01:16rather than the big, expensive company.
01:19I can accept that the $1,049 steam machine, not including accessories,
01:24is part of Valve's beliefs.
01:26But it certainly doesn't represent mine.
