00:00PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang says PAS and UMNO have put their past differences aside
00:05to consolidate the Malay-Muslim vote in Johor. In a Facebook post, Hadi said cooperation with
00:12Barisan National was needed to avoid a split in Muslim political power and keep Malay-Muslim
00:18leadership in power in Johor. The move marks a major shift for PAS and UMNO, two parties that
00:25have spent much of their history as fierce rivals. One of the biggest flashpoints came in 1981 when
00:31Hadi delivered the controversial Amanat Hadi speech. In it, he accused UMNO leaders and members
00:38of being infidels for upholding secular laws instead of Islamic law. The speech was later linked to the
00:44Mamali incident where 18 people, including four policemen, were killed during a police operation
00:50in Baling Kedah. For much of their history, PAS and UMNO remained on opposing sides of Malay-Muslim
00:57politics. The two parties later formalised their cooperation under Muafakat National in 2019,
01:04but the alliance effectively collapsed after PAS joined Bersatu to form Perikatan National the
01:09following year. Despite their history, Hadi said both parties were now setting aside past differences
01:16for what he described as a greater goal of preserving Johor's stability and keeping its leadership on the right path.
