00:00Okay, what we are all here for really is Bruiser. Can we just, so cute.
00:07Hi, my name's Sophie Durakoff and I am one of the co-designers on Elle.
00:12And I am Sarah Biblow and I am the other costume designer on Elle.
00:17And we are here today to take you through the costume looks that you'll see on season one of our
00:23show.
00:34We are following Elle Woods through high school. We get to explore her entire journey.
00:41One of my favorite and fondest memories of the beginning of the Legally Belonged Universe was when Reese and I
00:46went to UCLA to visit a sorority house.
00:48We knew there was going to be a signature color. So we went on a field trip and we went
00:52to the sorority house and all of the girls were wearing pink and they all had the Tiffany necklace.
00:57And from that moment on, it was just like there was nothing else it could be because it was art
01:02reflecting life. The world showed us what it should be.
01:05The setting of the series is honestly, in my mind, the greatest era for clothing. You know, we are living
01:12in 1995 Seattle grunge, which is jewel tones and plaids and combat boots.
01:20In contrast to that, we have Bel Air, which is, you know, expensive and bright and beautiful.
01:33This was Elle trying to fit in in Seattle. We ended up doing probably five different versions of bedazzling of
01:41our own for this shirt.
01:43We landed on the one that we did mostly because it brought the most laughs to everyone.
01:48The belt that you see here was actually inspired by the 1995 Valentino collection.
01:56They did this beautiful butterfly runway collection.
02:00We wanted to pay a little bit of homage to the original film.
02:04And so we have her shoes that were kind of just a play off Elle Woods when we first saw
02:10her in the film.
02:14I also have to show you the amazing backpack that she wears every day to school.
02:20This is a vintage Gucci backpack from 1995.
02:24We were able to source two of these for the entire series, and it kind of became one of her
02:30iconic pieces that you'll see throughout.
02:32I think at one point in her life, there became rules to her style.
02:37But Elle in this series, you see her truly kind of coming out of her comfort zone.
02:42Eva makes a comment saying that the Woods girls never wear green.
02:45And you will find in episode four, Elle Woods is wearing green.
02:49This is all about her finding herself and trying new things.
03:01So this is Elle's Sweet 16 look.
03:04There was so much love and passion that went into this.
03:07It was designed from scratch.
03:10The bow came from the bows that Bridget Bordeaux used to wear all the time.
03:15The hearts that you see on the dress and on the shoes, we actually custom made.
03:21And our amazing workman ended up recutting these.
03:27Oh my gosh, we ended up with 95 hearts because we just really wanted it to shine in a certain
03:34way.
03:35It was just so much love and passion that went into this.
03:41One of our Seattle looks.
03:43This is Dustin.
03:44You'll get to see this look in Carpet Mart in episode two.
03:48The fun thing about this is we actually reached out to our friends at Vans.
03:52And they released from their archive, um, graphics from their eighties and nineties collections.
03:58So this t-shirt is authentically, um, from the nineties in general, this show being from 1995,
04:07we're trying to pull out as many nostalgic moments that we can that really bring out memories for people.
04:15And to me, this was something that just really hit home.
04:19Dustin's style is definitely in contrast to Elle's.
04:22You'll see that his color tone is a lot more muted and dark.
04:27Um, we really wanted to sell that contrast between the two worlds and have Elle really stand out in the
04:35Seattle world.
04:35What are you doing?
04:37Getting you out of your head.
04:38I'm on wedges.
04:43Okay.
04:43What we are all here for really is Bruiser.
04:48He may or may not have been my favorite.
04:50We did so many fittings for Bruiser.
04:53Can we just, so cute.
04:56This is his sleep mask.
04:57When we first built it, we thought that it was small enough and it, he came in and it quite
05:02literally fell off of his head.
05:03We had to go to Swivorski and get the smallest crystals that they make.
05:09One of our incredible prep costumers hand bedazzled this and it took her about four hours per mask.
05:16And on that note, Cruiser, who is Bruiser's stand-in has a bit of a smaller head than Bruiser.
05:21So we had to make two of everything.
05:27This is where it all started.
05:29Mom and dad.
05:30Um, we have Eva here in the Sweet 16 look and we have Wyatt poolside when they break the news
05:37to Elle that she's moving to Seattle.
05:39Eva's dress was a custom build.
05:42Um, this was one that I am actually so, so proud of.
05:46We drew reference from Claudia Schiffer, the supermodel.
05:49Eva is basically the Claudia Schiffer of Bel Air.
05:53The color of this dress was a labor of love.
05:58I ended up dying about six different types of butter yellow, um, before landing on this one specifically.
06:06We actually had June come into the fitting room under lights and we held up each color of butter yellow
06:13along with multiple types of lace to really find which one would make her shine.
06:17And this one specifically, the moment that we draped it on her body, we were like, that's the one, that's
06:22the dress.
06:23Wyatt, on the other hand, he truly is kind of the all American dad.
06:29We looked at a lot of images that were like Ralph Lauren ads.
06:33His closet would have been something that Eva purchased that he goes in and just pulls from every day.
06:39So, so many of Wyatt's pieces ended up being just that.
06:43They ended up being Ralph Lauren.
06:45He's a pulled together dad.
06:46Um, and you know, this is a look that we absolutely love.
06:51How I hope people react to the costume design on Elle is a sense of nostalgia and excitement.
07:00My hope is that people will react to Elle the way that they reacted to the Legally Blonde movies.
07:06I really hope that people react with like a full jump in the air and a cheer.
07:12I do hope that it empowers people to just play more and not be scared to be who they are.
07:19You know, whether that's wearing a bikini to a skateboard party or bedazzling a Grunge t-shirt.
07:26Are we planning for season two?
07:28I don't know.
07:28You'll have to wait and find out.
07:30Bye.
07:31Bye.
07:32Bye.
07:34Bye.
