Trade Minister Chris Bryant says that the government is working on deporting Shabir Ahmed to Pakistan, the ringleader of a Rochdale grooming gang who was released from prison on licence last week. 00:00So, first of all, I'm delighted that this vile, despicable man went to prison.
00:04He was convicted.
00:06Keir Starmer was the director of public prosecutions when that happened, and that is good.
00:11He's out now, and of course we want to see him out of this country.
00:15The difficulty is that the law doesn't allow that.
00:18It prevents the UK from deporting anybody who was here before 1973 or has been here for five years.
00:25So we've got to change that law.
00:26And the second thing is, it's all very well for us to deport somebody.
00:30The other country's got to take them.
00:32So we've got to persuade Pakistan that they're going to do that.
00:34We are working on both of those things as a matter of urgency.
